Customer Reviews of Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer MODEL# TAT-2000CCustomer Review: Works well, if you observe some rules Summary: 4 Stars
Despite its drawbacks, I actually like this thermometer. It takes a little longer to get a reading than my ear thermometer, which takes only a second. I use it as a backup.
There are several rules that must be observed to get an accurate reading, which may make this unit impractical to some and may explain some of the poor readings some reviewers have gotten:
* It doesn't work if the child has just taken a bath.
* The thermometer must not be moved from rooms which vary in temperature. When it is moved, the thermometer will not give a good reading for about 20 minutes as it adjusts to the new temperature.
* If the child was laying down, the thermometer must not be used on the side the child had been laying on.
* If the child is sweating, swipe the forehead and then place it behind the ear before releasing the read button.
* The thermometer must be swiped over the temporal artery, not just any part of the forehead.
* The head of the thermometer must be kept clean and shiny -- no fingerprints or dust or anything else.
The readings I get usually agree with the tympanic thermometer. When it doesn't, I go for the third opinion, the standard oral/rectal thermometer.
UPDATE: This thermometer is still working well for us. When I use thermometers, I get obsessive. I don't know why, but I always need a second opinion and this temporal thermometer does match up pretty closely with our Braun ear thermometer.
Customer Review: NOT ACCURATE AT ALL!!!!!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
This has got to be the worst most innaccurate thermometer I have ever owned....my daughter was sick and I had taken her temp with it while she was in bed sleeping, I got a reading of 105.9...I nearly passed out, knowing a high fever like this is very dangerous,so I packed her up and took her to the Emergency Room at 6 in the morning thinking I had a real emergency with a child who had a very high fever, they took her temperature as soon as we got there and got a reading of 102.2, they had asked me why I thought her temp was almost 106, I explained to them that I had taken it at home at that is what the thermometer read. They then asked me what type of thermometer I was using, I told them that I was using the Exergen temporal forehead thermometer. Well, my husband, luckily had put the thermometer in my purse before I had left, and the nurses suggested that I take her temp again with the Exergen thermomter just curious to see what it would read again...so we took her temp again and it had still read 105.9, so the nurse there brought me a brand new 9 volt battery for the thermometer, we put the new battery in took her temp again....105.9 again!!!!!!! I took my temp with it, it read 103.5, I WAS NOT SICK, and had a normal reading on the hospitals thermometer, so needless to say the hospital officials explained to me that they would not suggest anyone buy this thermometer, because they are NOT accurate, and they suggest either the ear thermometers or the digitals. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT!!!!

UPDATE: I find that using this at night when my children are sleeping just serves to wake them up. An ear thermometer is a better choice, if one doesn't want to wake up the kids.
Customer Review: The only thermometer we use now! Summary: 5 Stars
We owned 2 other thermometers before buying this one and never trusted them. Who has time to figure out how many degrees to add for under arm, etc. when your baby is ill and cranky? With just a simple swipe, this thermometer quickly, painlessly and accurately gives you the right temp with no conversions necessary.
Yes, as others have suggested, you must be a little more careful when taking the temp as the entire 'cap' needs to be placed directly on the skin when swiping. Minor lifts will result in minor deviations in temperature. However, unless you really lift it away from the skin, the readings do not vary by much (< .5 degrees Farenheit). I agree that while you have a trashing child, this may not be as simple a task as you might expect, but what's the alternative? Holding down that same trashing child to take an accurate rectal reading? No thanks! :)
I only have 2 complaints about this product. 1) The digital readout is not lit so if you're taking the temp in a dim room (like while your baby is sleeping), you can expect to bring a flashlight to read the results. 2) The cover for the thermometer is very easily lost as it is simply a plastic cap that is detached from the unit itself.
Otherwise, I'm a complete fan of this product, and we've chucked all other thermometers in our household. Even my husband and I use it on ourselves - it's a lot quicker than placing a thermometer under my tongue! :)
Customer Review: easy and pain free! (for both me and the kids) Summary: 4 Stars
I received this item as a baby shower gift with my first child, who is now 3. I didn't use it until she was over 1 because my first pediatrician told me it wasn't reliable. (My current ped says that it is) By the time my poor baby was one she had already had over 20 ear infections. So needless to say, ear thermometers were not pleasant. It would take 4 people to hold her down at the doctor's office to get a reading.
Once I started using this thermometer it was so easy! It did take a bit of practice to make sure that you are going at the right speed (not too fast!) and not letting the thermometer leave the forehead. My daughter loves it and can now do it to herself, and us, and the dog (LOL).
And now that I know I can use it on my newborn baby too it is a Godsend! I hated taking the rectal temps, probably just as much as the kids did.
My only complaint is that the temps seem to vary by about .1-.5 degrees. But I suppose that even oral thermometers do that too. With my little guy, if the fever is elevated I check rectally, just to be accurate if I have to bring him in to the doctor's office. But is nice to have a gauge without having to use the rectal one all the time.
We have had ours 3 years now, and it is still ticking! Same battery and all! And boy, it has seen some rough treatment too (think 3 year olds!).
