Customer Reviews of Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer MODEL# TAT-2000C

Customer Review: Works well, if you observe some rules
Summary: 4 Stars

Despite its drawbacks, I actually like this thermometer. It takes a little longer to get a reading than my ear thermometer, which takes only a second. I use it as a backup.

There are several rules that must be observed to get an accurate reading, which may make this unit impractical to some and may explain some of the poor readings some reviewers have gotten:

* It doesn't work if the child has just taken a bath.
* The thermometer must not be moved from rooms which vary in temperature. When it is moved, the thermometer will not give a good reading for about 20 minutes as it adjusts to the new temperature.
* If the child was laying down, the thermometer must not be used on the side the child had been laying on.
* If the child is sweating, swipe the forehead and then place it behind the ear before releasing the read button.
* The thermometer must be swiped over the temporal artery, not just any part of the forehead.
* The head of the thermometer must be kept clean and shiny -- no fingerprints or dust or anything else.

The readings I get usually agree with the tympanic thermometer. When it doesn't, I go for the third opinion, the standard oral/rectal thermometer.

Customer Review: Seems accurate, but BAD design
Summary: 3 Stars

I would really give this 3.5 stars, but since that's not an option, I've given it 3 as t doesn't quite make a 4 for me.
We've only had this for 48 hours, and wouldn't you know, our daughter got sick right on cue. She gets extremely high temps (105+ regularly), and at 2.5 y/o taking an accurate temp means rectally, which none of us think is a great idea at her age, but it's very important to us b/c with her even .5 degrees is the difference between a trip to the hospital or not. The temps we're getting with this seem to be accurate (we compared to our digital the first few times). My main complaint is that the design hinders using it effectively! Why they placed the button and the display on the side that faces the person who's temp you are taking is beyond me. One is supposed to keep the sensor in contact with the person's forehead to the hairline and back - but the angle you have to push the button in makes this more difficult to do. I think that this could affect accuracy, it makes the learning curve a bit steeper, and makes it harder to use at an angle if your child is asleep. They need to switch the button and the display to the other side, then this would be a 5 star review.

Customer Review: Much better than some alternatives!
Summary: 5 Stars

After a week with all four kids running temps between 101 and 105, and ALL of them hating to have their temperature taken in any way we had available, we decided to finally bite the bullet and order this thermometer. Of course, everybody was well before it got here, but we've been playing with it. We love this thing! I read enough reviews to know that we had to follow all directions precisely to get good readings, but it's really easy to use. One push of a button, one two-second swipe of the forehead, and a good, digital reading appears. I took my own temp with a regular oral digital thermometer at the same time I took it with the Exergen thermometer, and the two readings were within a tenth of a degree of each other. My two-year-old, who screamed through a two-minute axillary temperature reading, barely registered my presence when I took his temp with this thermometer.

The only downside, I think, is that it requires a 9V battery, and we never seem to have any spare 9V's. Other than that, this thermometer is easy to use, easy to read, easy to clean, and should make our lives a little easier next time we have a house full of sick kids!

Customer Review: Complete waste of money. Inconsistent readings.
Summary: 1 Stars

This product is waste of money. Even the cheapest ones give consistent temperature whereas this product is expensive and unreliable. When your child has temperature you want to get a reliable reading and not use something which shows sometimes 100, 100.5, 99.4. Which one is supposed to be correct? I don't want to guess which one is correct when its my child's temperature. The product website explains why sometimes you can get inconsistent readings. If you agree that it gives inconsistent reading(I don't care why) why use such product.
Whenever my wife or I tried to use this we were never sure if our child has temperature or not and we have to decide that using the other thermometer where you have to wait for a minute but gives you same and correct reading even when you try 5 times. The only reason I purchased this product was because I was fed up of finding that my other thermometer's battery is dead or sometimes wont even start. Hence I thought may be If I try a costlier one it will be better and reliable.

I can understand when the readings are off by 0.2 to 0.3 but not by 1.

I do not recommend this product to anyone.

Customer Review: really cool once you know how it works
Summary: 5 Stars

We all have the flu at my house. Man I love this thermometer! No waiting, no sanitizing, and let me tell you- you should have seen the look on my five year old's face when, for some unrecallable reason, I explained to him how we used to take children's temperatures! I takes a little getting used to, having to depress the button and holding it until you've scanned without removing it from the patient's head. And apparently it causes some cooling. You must wait thirty seconds before repeating, otherwise you will get slight variations. You may also get minor differences because of technique. Frankly I found this much less of a concern than having to remember in the middle of the night how to mentally calibrate the differences in readings amongst various types of thermometers. As I've gotten used to this item, I find it very accurate and easy to use. Like another reviewer, I wish it was back lit to see in the dark. I also wish it beeped a tad bit quieter, or with a lower pitch. Still, while it would wake me up, it is not loud, and when my kid is truly sick, it doesn't wake up him. It's just loud enough to give me pause.
