Customer Reviews of Flame Tamer SIMMER Ring Aluminum HEAT Diffuser DISTRIBUTER gas stove top stovetop with Wood Handle

Customer Review: De Stresser
Summary: 5 Stars

I had one of these years ago, using it under a Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker on a city gas stove.

After moving into a place with an electric stove, it landed in the donation box.

I purchased a one person cazuela for my morning oatmeal. These are suggested. I pulled diffusers out of the donation box. One is the cast iron, the other older version of this one.
I want all my burners covered now. I collect old cast iron skillets and cookers. There is always a hot spot. All cookware has imperfections, including my All Clad, Le Creuset. I live alone now and use the computer for long stretches. I take walks. With these little work horses, my oatmeal does not burn and is ready when I get back. I use organic steel cut oats. I also use the Rancho Gordo beans. These flame tamers (diffusers) with a clay pot create a mini oven without the whole place being heated up. Good with the Chinese sand pots, Japanese Donabis.
Got stuck in traffic.. thought I would come back to a mess..the magic combination of diffuser and pot had done their work.. perfectly cooked, not burned just hot and waiting for me. Amazing. Took me about a week to learn to trust it. Freedom !I will be purchasing another. Could not find the same free shipping offer. Try them.. never mind the aesthetics.. I find charm in these little gems. I just leave them under the heavy pots on the stove.. saves my wrist.

Customer Review: Cheap, simple, and WORKS GREAT!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a ceramic cooktop (would prefer gas and a line has been run in the basement for "someday") but you can only turn these burners so low. I like to make cooked-half-a-day bolognese sauce without having to stir it every 10 to 15 minutes to keep it from scorching. The flame tamer makes this possible. I can go outside and do some gardening or anything else I want to do and do not have to worry about my sauce at all. Theoretically, could even alleviate the need for a double boiler with some dishes. Great for any dish that you wish to keep heat just below simmer.

PS Like other reviewer, Paul, I don't care about the handle, nor will I once I get my gas cooktop. Like him, I'll just let it burn off if it must and leave the diffuser on the burner til it cools ...hee hee.

Customer Review: Works great and no smoking
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered two of these, one of this brand and one Norpro. They're almost identical. There was a note enclosed that recommended washing before use to prevent smoking. I followed the recommendation and had absolutely no smoking or odor.

It works perfectly on my gas stove. I've been frustrated for years because I couldn't adjust the flame low enough to warm or gently simmer sauces and soups.

Yes, the wood handle singes near the metal, but it's better than melting plastic or a hot all-metal handle. It doesn't bother me at all. I'm just careful to place it out of direct contact with the flame.

It's definitely worth the price.

Customer Review: Works well, but...
Summary: 4 Stars

This product works as described in that it attenuates the heat from my gas burner on its lowest setting and makes it possible to achieve a slow simmer. My only quibble is that the wooden handle can too easily get charred by the flame from an adjacent burner. I was warned about the handle in other reviews, so this has to be q minor quibble. I believe this device is a good value for the money. I recommend it for a very careful cook who can be attentive enough to always protect the wooden handle from inadvertent charring.

Customer Review: Wooden handle on a heat diffuser?
Summary: 1 Stars

This was not my smartest purchase. I must have missed the fact that the simmer ring has a wooden handle.

The wooden handle is easy to burn during use. Also, if you need to clean the metal surface and water gets inside the heating disc, it rusts. Don't be misled, as I was, by the good overall rating this product has at the moment (4 stars) and its reasonable price. It is not worth purchasing. I threw mine away after one use and now own a far better product that I bought for an equivalent price.
