Customer Reviews of HoMedics SS-2000 Sound Spa Relaxation Sound Machine with 6 Nature Sounds, SilverCustomer Review: I'm ready to Upgrade. Summary: 3 Stars
I have owned five of these in the past three years. The first one lasted over year, but quality control is getting worse with almost everything.
On the other four, after a few months, the control that works the volume and turns it on and off, starts acting up. Sometimes I can bang on the thing with my hand and it will start up. The latest one is going bad. It starts, stops, starts, stops...not good for sleep to lay there wondering if it will shut off before you get to sleep. I don't keep receipts for less expensive items so I've never checked to see if the warrantee is still in effect.
I'm going to order a better quality one this time. If it lasts three or four years I'll break even and I hear that the sound quality is better. I only need a steady noise so even though the sound of this homedic model is rather tinny, that part was OK for me. I purchased them locally and that is the only one available.
I'm looking forward to trying something of better quality. This one might be good one to start with though; you will know if sound helps, or like my son in law, any noise will keep you awake. I think, from the studies I've read in the past hour of searching, that most people do sleep better with a steady noise in the background. It does make a major difference for me, not because of a noisy environment, but a busy mind that won't shut up. I can make myself listen to the steady sound and drown out my thinking.
I'm giving it three stars for the very reasonable price. A good starter machine.
Customer Review: Works like a charm! Summary: 5 Stars
I got this for my daughter's room when she was about 7 months old. We live near a firestation and needed something to block the sirens and other outside and inside noises. Using rain or waterfall setting worked great. Ocean puts her to sleep faster, probably because the rhythmic ebb and flow of the waves is more like a heartbeat and womb sounds, but since there are lulls in it where outside noise might be audible, we usually use rain or waterfall. I love this machine so much, I now plan to buy one for myself. I love the fact that it runs on electricity. I have a battery-operated one, but the batteries run out fairly quickly. The brightness of the light is a little annoying, but you can put something over it. Yes, the speaker sounds a little tinny- it's the same kind of speaker as for your basic drugstore clock radio. But since you're listenting to white noise, not opera, I didn't find that at all distracting. I also don't find the loop distracting. I have heard much more obvious loops on other white noise machines, and this one never really registers with me. I also really like that there are no annoying sounds sprinkled in. One of our other machines had tropical birds cawing, and in a dream state I'd always think it was the baby crying and I'd jump out of bed before realizing it was the white noise machine. These white noises are pretty basic, and not much more complex than running a noisy fan, which for me is a plus. Only downside: once you get used to sleeping with it, it's hard to fall asleep without it!! :-)
Customer Review: Opposite of relaxing... Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this for my infant because our house is terribly quiet and he is a super light sleeper. There are several sound settings, all of which sound relaxing in theory, until you play them. The one I was looking forward to using the most was the ocean waves sound. It is on a quick 6 second loop which also contains sea gulls squawking in the backgroud. So every 6 seconds you hear the same sea gull sound over and over and over...it's enough to drive you nuts (if you pay attention to stuff like that). So I tried the rain forest setting....same thing except with jungle animal sounds. The waterfall setting is ok, but it starts to sound like static on a radio station after awhile. The heartbeat setting is just plain weird to me, even with an infant son, I would never use this setting. The only one I can tolerate is the rain setting, which also has its own annoying loop of hard drip light drip sounds - but I found this was the only setting where I could forget about the loop repeating. In addition to my disappointment of the sounds, I found that the quality is not the greatest either. After using it about a dozen times, the dial for power and volume has stopped functioning normally. This unit is light weight and portable, but I would expect nothing less these days where everything music related is miniature and portable. This is overall a real disappointment- I'm going to have to bring back the box fan.
Customer Review: Great sleep aid! Summary: 5 Stars
I have a hard time falling asleep as well as my daughter. I bought this sound machine as it had different nature sounds. I have never had a sound machine before so I thought being able to choose from different sounds would be a plus. I found that I liked the rain the best. It sounds like a nice steady rain and water dripping from the roof of a house onto concrete. After I bought mine, my daughter used it and I had to buy another one for her! She likes the ocean. It sounds like small waves on the beach with birds occasionally making sounds. My husband likes the ocean waves but doesn't like the birds. We have never used the heartbeat, but I guess if you wanted to put that in a babies room, that might help a baby sleep. The waterfall is a bit intense for me as it is one constant noise. The rainforest is the sounds of birds and insects. Summer night is basically crickets. The timer is a nice feature also. You can set it to go off at 15, 30 and 60 minutes. I also like the volume control. I can turn it up to attempt to drown out snoring! The only thing that is puzzling is that when the unit goes off from the timer, you have to turn off the power knob and then back on again to get the unit to turn on again. I also like that it can be plugged in or used with batteries. We took it on a recent trip and it was nice to be able to fall asleep easily in a hotel for a change.
Customer Review: Not bad, but batteries get used up super quick Summary: 4 Stars
We use this in our 18-month-old son's room when he's sleeping. We really only use waterfall, which creates a nice, flat white noise. We have had no trouble with the volume knob like over reviewers - can be very quiet or super loud.
I'd say the best thing about this is its portability. We can easily pack it whenever we travel, ensuring our son will sleep well wherever we are. I also like that it can run on batteries, as the set-up of my son's room would make the use of an outlet too dangerous (i.e. - he'd be pulling on the cord all the time).
My only complaint, and it's a pretty big one, is that we change the batteries at least once a month and it takes four AA's. I have a radio that's been running on the same batteries for almost 5 years. Why does this blow through them so quickly?
Edited to add: my son is now 2.5. We still use this every night, though we finally had to plug it in because the batteries were dying on a weekly basis rather than monthly. Also, the volume knob has begun to act up as others have complained. When we first click it on, it's super loud and crackly, but if we keep turning it, it seems to get past that and the volume setting goes back to normal - which is why we're still able to use it
