Customer Review: among the very best sound machines in this price range

I own multiple Homedics SS-2000 sound machines and have been using them daily for at least 5 years. They are the perfect way to go to sleep if you need to hear "white noise." It includes a total of 6 different sounds: rainforest, ocean, heartbeat, summer night, rain and waterfall. My very favorite is the rain sound because it's so relaxing and peaceful. I also enjoy the ocean and waterfall sounds very much but rarely set it to those just because I like the rain sound so much more. The Homedics SS-2000 also includes a timer in 15, 30 and 60 increments so that it will shut off automatically if you don't want it on constantly. And there is a volume control. My only small complaints are that the cords are very flimsy, the sounds in general are somewhat low (that's why I purchased multiple sets) and sometimes the buttons don't always turn correctly (but after 4 years of use that can be expected). The price on Amazon is very reasonable as I can remember paying more than this. These are made in China and can also work on batteries (a total of 4 double-AA) but I do not use the batteries because it doesn't offer a very long life (maybe 2 nights tops). If you're looking for a long-lasting sound machine that you can use on a daily basis then this is for you.Customer Review: major connectivity flaw

I bought this machine for personal use about a year ago. I can't stand listening to any of the noises besides rain but I literally can't sleep without it. My boyfriend can fall asleep to any of the sounds except heartbeat (too creepy) and ocean waves (waves come too quickly and the start of the loop is really easily detected).
By pure coincidence a mom of one of the kids in my preschool class donated one for use during naptime and the family that I nanny for has one in both of their kid's rooms. I use this machine every single day and twice a day five days a week so I'm really familiar with it. My biggest grievance with this product isn't the sounds. I don't expect non-stop, unlooped, life-like sounds to come from a bedside white noise machine that costs less than $25. The main problem is that there is some connectivity situation with the power dial that causes the sound to fade out or cut out intermittetly. The problem can be temporarily solved by pressing down on the power dial and jiggling it a bit. Really it's just a minor inconvenience but it seems like such a basic function of a product like this that once you turn it on it should stay on. This problem happens with all four of the Homedics noise machines that I use.

We bought this in hopes to help our DD sleep better through the night (she is 2). We tried it, and LOVE IT. We have it on summer nights.
She pretty much has been finally sleeping through the night, which I believe is due to the sound machine. She used to wake up 2-4 times a night. My DH doesn't believe it is the sound machine, but I beg to differ. In the am when I go into her room, I turn off her heater, and then the sound machine and before I walk out of her room she is popping up in her bed. She knows that lil machine is no longer on.
We live on a pretty busy street and the train is only about a block away. And for some reason they decide to really blow and lay on the horn in the wee hrs of the morning. I think this machine helps drown it out. I actually have it turned pretty loud (just about all the way).
I like the idea that you can plug this into the wall instead of using batteries. I also like that you can set the timer OR play it all night.
I'm really thinking about getting one for our room, and when we have another baby definatly going to get one for in the nursery.
Would recommend this product, and the price is awesome!

I ordered this sound machine for my children's bedroom. They are ages 2 and 4 and have recently had to learn to share a bedroom. We had been using a fan and air purifier for white noise, but I wanted a smaller machine that we could also take with us when we traveled.
I am pleased with the Homedics sound machine. It has 6 different sounds available. I find the waterfall noise to be best for my children because it is the best for white noise, in my opinion. Some of the other tracks have sounds that could be distracting for some, such as seagulls or birds chirping. They are still very relaxing sounds, though.
I really like that this machine can either be left on all night or can be put on a 15- 30- or 60-minute timer.
My only disappointment was that there was not a straight 'white noise' function, although I have found that the waterfall sound works very well for straight white noise so this is not a big issue.
The volume is adjustable and I find it's range to be impressive. My children sleep in a small room, but turning the volume up all the way is much too loud, and yet you can make this machine rather quiet if needed.

I bought this to drown out noise while my baby sleeps and it does just that. Although, I wish now that I had gotten a sound machine that has more options, or a different variety - on some you can even combine different sounds to customize your own. I really only use the "rain" sound. I would like the "ocean" sound except there are loud seagulls in the background, and I'm afraid they'll wake my baby, since I turn the machine up loud enough to mask outside noise. The other sounds are the heartbeat, waterfall, summer night, and rainforest. My baby seemed to like the heartbeat sound, but I sleep in the same room and it kept me awake - to me it sounds more like someone beating a drum. The waterfall doesnt sound like much at all - just your basic static white noise sound, and the other two are nice for background ambiance, but they dont drown out anything. I gave this 4 stars though, because it works for what I bought it for, the sound quality is great, and it's simple - easy to use, it's very portable, and it has a battery or an AC option. Now that I have a sound machine I dont know how I got along without one - especially with a baby and a household of barking dogs!
