Customer Reviews of HoMedics SS-2000 Sound Spa Relaxation Sound Machine with 6 Nature Sounds, Silver

Customer Review: so so
Summary: 2 Stars

I have used this machine as a sourse for white noise for my little one. Even though she seems to fall asleep pretty quickly while listening to it, it irritates me so much that I cannot fall asleep myself. The music/noise can go on for a little while, which is good, but it sounds so mechanical. I may have ocd, or something, but I notice the piece of the track where the melody rewinds and plays again. It really gets to my nerves to know that I have to hear this artificial sound of ocean/seagulls, etc. instead of the real one. It is not relaxing. I simply went to buy a cd player Sony with the alarm clock. It allows you to download music on a cd and then play it for hours and hours upon for as long as your cd space allows it. I loaded the real sounding waterfall from the internet and I completely felt the difference. I am going to stick with my latest purchase. Homedics relaxing machine does not last very long. I know it's not supposed to be dropped, yet stuff happens. I've replaed 3 homedics spa sounding machine because they would accidentally drop and my daughter could not fall asleep without them. It's quite disappointing why they are so flimsy.

Customer Review: Had to modify mine...poor design...and scam alert
Summary: 3 Stars

I owned the previous black square model of this some 20 years ago and loved it, lent it out, and then moved -- without it, and so I replaced it with this model...

PROS
I fall asleep quickly (always have to the rain track and sometimes use the ocean)

Small and fits nicely on the bedside table

Runs on batteries.

CONS
Bright green light indicating machine is on (Homedics--Do you think I could not hear it was on without the light?)

Bright green light indicating whether machine is set to 15, 30, or 90 minutes. (Homedics--Is this necessary?)

After sound runs for 15, 30, or 90 minutes, the machine does not automatically shut itself off and still sucks up batteries or electricity.

MODIFICATIONS

Purchased an extension cord to plug it in and not use batteries.

Black duct tape to mask the lights.

If you have this machine to complement a sleep program (mine includes blacked out windows and LED on the cable box and television) then you will have to black out the lights.

Customer Review: White Noise for Baby
Summary: 4 Stars

Our family has really benefitted from this white noise machine. We love it because it helps our baby son sleep soundly in our house and it makes a new environment feel familiar to him since we take it with us wherever we go for overnight trips. During nap time, it drowns out the dog's barking and he sleeps right through ringing phones, conversation noise and traffic noise too. When I'm in need of an emergency nap, I use it myself to help shush away thoughts and songs stuck in my head...or just noise around the house that might distract me from getting a few zzzzz-s. I've bought this item for a few "new mama" friends and they love it too. It's better than other brands because the volume goes pretty high, which is necessary for an infant who actually prefers a noisy sleeping environment. We had one before this one, and it was way too gentle and quiet. As soon as we switched to the Homedics brand, our baby's sleeping changed for the better! The only thing that could be improved about this product is that the cord is pretty sensitive and if it's not firmly connected to the wall or the unit, it will sometimes cut off with no warning.

Customer Review: Great for Tinnitus sufferers and office cubicles
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked this up at Bed Bath & Beyond for [...] (after using the ubiquitious 20% off coupons). I suffer from tinnitus and also work in an office cubicle. This inexpensive little machine works great for sound masking. I have tried mp3's of white noise for my ipod, but that doesn't work as there is a gap of sound as it reloops that makes it unpleasant and unworkable. This unit has a only 6 sounds, but the rain and waterfall choices are pretty close to white noise and are pleasing to the ear even after an 8 hour office day. I use it in my office cubicle to mask some of the other workers voices as I work. It is very unobtrusive. I have had it turned on for a week and no other fellow coworker has noticed it. The tinnitus of course is still ringing away in my ears, but my attention is drawn to the sound spa. For some reason, when we have complete silence in my office, I find it uncomfortable. These sounds, similar to the hum of an air conditioner or whirring fan, make it more acceptable. When some of these masking companies want hundreds of dollars for white or pink noise, to find this little spa for under [...] is a blessing.

Customer Review: cuts in and out during baby's sleep-time, volume dial temperamental
Summary: 2 Stars

we loved the Homedics' old sound machine model for our younger children, so after several years when the cord gave out, i bought this one thinking of course it would be great for our new baby's nursery. i am sadly disappointed after a few months of using it. when it works, its great- the sounds, the volume are great. BUT!!! it now cuts out all the time. it'll just stop working in the middle of the night or the middle of a nap, defeating the purpose of the machine. or it will have the ocean tide effect on any sound- where it will increase in volume and then decrease in volume even on the other sound settings. i have to turn the volume button back and forth trying to get the exact spot in which it will work, otherwise there is no sound at all. so frustrating!!! now we unplug it from the wall instead of turning it off in the hopes of next time we plug it in, the sound will turn on without having to go through the whole thing again. do yourself a favor and pick a different one. i'm in the process of finding a good one myself. i am looking for one with an 'on and off' button instead of a dial.
