Customer Reviews of HoMedics SS-2000 Sound Spa Relaxation Sound Machine with 6 Nature Sounds, Silver

Customer Review: Volume button faulty after time
Summary: 3 Stars

We have had this machine for a year or so. It worked fine for about 6 months then the volume button began having trouble. At times the machine would quit when adjusting the button. This is evidently a common problem for these machines as there are countless other reviews with the same complaint. You have to wiggle the button to get it to stay on. After even longer time you'd have to tap the button to make it stay on. The machine sometimes goes off in the middle of the night and you wake to a startling silnce then have to jiggle the button to make it come back on. While it worked we liked it, but we'll definitely be shopping for a better quality machine this go round. Tonight it finally bit the dust - no amount of tapping, jiggling, wiggling and finally smacking would make it work. Besides this problem - there is another con to the machine in my opinion. The ocean waves setting is choppy and you can hear the stopping of the recording - mid wave! It's defintely not authentic sounding. The one setting with birds is a little too chirpy for sleep. The rain, white noise and crickets are the only we used.

Customer Review: 3+ Years and Going Strong!
Summary: 5 Stars

I actually got online tonight to read sound machine reviews, as I wondered if there was something out there that was better than our little HoMedics SS-2000. After looking around for quite a little while, I think I'll gratefully stick with the one we have!

We purchased this machine when our now-three-year-old was an infant. She has graduated to listening to stories on CD while falling asleep, just in time for me to commandeer the machine to drown out household noises as I try to grab a nap or an early bedtime, as baby #5 is on the way. I look forward to many nights of restful sleep with our new little one and this wonderful machine.

We use the machine on "Rain" or "Waterfall". I prefer "Waterfall" as it is the most like my beloved, departed metal box fan (snif). With this machine on my night stand, I can sleep through the other noises in our home. I use the 60 minute timer, and I always fall asleep well before it turns off. I am very happy with this purchase and feel that we've already had much more than our money's worth from it.

Customer Review: Great Sound Machine!
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely LOVE this product. I used to be the type of person that would wake up feeling less than rested on days where i got around 8-9 hrs of sleep. When I got this sound machine, I noticed a drastic change because I actually woke up feeling rested, even on days when I got less than 7 hrs. I recommend this product to everyone. My two favorite sounds are the rain and summer night (sounds like crickets); one downside to the rain sound is that it sometimes makes me wake up needing to desperately use the bathroom, but it is seriously a small price to pay when comparing it to my new quality of sleep. I find that the rainforest and ocean sounds are a little too distracting for me when I try to sleep, because they vary sounds of birds and water running, and it is not uniform like the heartbeat (which is creepy), rain, summer night, and waterfall. That being said, I have three noises I enjoy to fall asleep to, and can switch back and forth between them, so I am extremely happy with this product. It is definitely worth every penny!

Customer Review: Wonderful little machine!
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this machine for a number of years now and it's holding up really well. Originally I purchased it on the advice of my doctor when I was having bouts of insomnia and I'd run the rain sound all night rather than setting a timer. Worked really well for me and now we have a 4 month old and this machine has been a fantastic addition to our "baby sleep" bag of tricks. The waterfall sound is perfect for helping him to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. I love that it's compact (I have seen others that are much too big and clunky for my tastes) and I think it's great that I can plug it in or use batteries (currently using Enloop rechargeable batteries) when we want to take it along on trips. Well worth the money. If and when this one finally quits, I'll be buying the same model to replace it.

The only reason for the 4 stars is that I can't stand how bright the power and timer lights are. In my opinion, the bright lights are at odds with a machine whose primary function is to help you relax/sleep.

Customer Review: Needed distraction
Summary: 4 Stars

My apartment suffers from corrosive building noise due to management neglect. It is too loud to mask--I would have to blast the stereo at all times. This sound machine, along with a loud fan, helps to distract me so that I don't lose my mind all at once.

I enjoy the rainforest birdsong in the morning, and raindrops in the evening. The sounds are higher frequency so don't seem to cover up low-frequency machine noises; they just help to take my mind off them.

The ocean loop seems noisy to me (I have downloaded oceans sounds from an Internet site that are more varied and pleasant, but that involves turning on the computer.) The heartbeat loop is scary, as others have remarked, though it's probably good for Halloween. I wish the volume could be adjusted lower so I could keep it by my bed; I think it's too loud, especially for falling asleep.

For the low price, this thing is very useful; I couldn't afford a more expensive model. I can't comment on longevity yet.
