After another model HoMedics soundspa would not work, I exchanged for this model, and lo, this one was also dysfunctional. The buttons on top (to select the soundtracks) did not function, and setting the various features of the clock were tremendously complex (and I have a PhD!). Not sure I ever got the automatic clock settings working right, even once set. So I recommend do not buy this product.
Note that as gifts I have received several other HoMedics products (foot spa, office chair massager pad, handheld vibrational massage unit)--ALL were either poor in function and broken within a few days to a few months. I am a light user of such products--HoMedics products are just of VERY LOW quality. Save yourself the heartache and money: don't buy anything from HoMedics.

We purchased this product primarily for the sound machine. Our house is extremely quiet...too quiet if you can believe that. Our children had difficulty staying asleep. The slightest sound seemed to disrupt their sleep patterns. We tried classical music CDs, which would work great until the music stopped. Rather than leave a radio playing music or have a CD repeat over and over, we opted for white noise. Using the "rain" function works far better than we anticipated and we intend to purchase one for each bedroom. As far as problems that have been mentioned...ours keeps time fine and if the ceiling projection is upside down when you turn it on, try pushing the button on the back that flips the projection before you disassemble the product, at least on the model we purchased.Customer Review: The Best Alarm for Non Morning People!

I am so excited with my new purchase. As a woman who like most have to work for a living I absolutely hate to get up in the morning. I don't like to talk to anyone, I curse every time I have to get up, I wonder why I can't hit the lotto, and I think about how many sick days I have before I get up out of the bed. This little doo-hickey has made my mornings much more enjoyable.
I have had a history of waking up to buzzers and music and each time the alarm went off, I was ready to slit my wrists. This alarm however, offers the option to wake up to calming, soothing, nature sounds and I gently ease into my mornings instead of being jolted into it. So, I wake up to the rainforest in the A.M. and I experience birds chirping and sway of the trees and I am happy for it......

It works well as a clock and alarm. The sounds are nothing fancy, the night and ocean sounds like each should respectively, while the others are good for white noise. To listen to a sound outside of the alarm function, it will stay on for the 15, 30 etc... min option chosen and can not be turned off otherwise. I do belive there is a way to do this, but I haven't reseached it. I chose not to turn it on and use the sounds only with the alarm. The celing display is entertaining, but I haven't found myself looking at the celing in place of the display. The celing display is bright, brighter than a night light. Overall I'm happy with the size of the clock, the variety of sounds over the typical alarm buzzer, and that fact that the alarm has always worked.Customer Review: Fantastic, and not only an alarm clock

It's not just an alarm. We use ours for the nature sounds. You can set it to your favorite nature sound, and leave it on all the time. Or just all night. Another useful feature is the ceiling-projected time. If you wake up in the middle of the night and want to see what time it is all you need do is look at the ceiling.
I got mine 2 years ago, and used it for awhile, then my cat knocked it off the nightstand and I found it again a few days ago.
I bought it to mask the barking dog next door. It didn't help for that, but finally that neighbor moved.
I set it up with the overhead clock projector on, and the STORM sound on. I turned it on and left it on.
