Customer Reviews of HoMedics WFL-CAN32 EnviraScape Shimmering Towers Illuminated Relaxation Fountain

Customer Review: Cute, but not very durable
Summary: 3 Stars

Ok, I'm a fountain fanatic -- I have several throughout my home -- pretty, fragile ones carefully placed out of harm's way. However, I wanted to place a small fountain on a low table that is precariously close to the long wagging tails of my greyhounds. Therefore, in case of an accident, my new fountain needed to be unbreakable (I could have no glass shards around dogs' feet), cheap to replace, if necessary, and (was it too much to hope for?) attractive. I found what I was looking for with this product. I was concerned that it would look cheap and, upon removing it from the box, I thought that it did. But when I put it together, filled it with water, surrounded it with river rocks, small plants, and turned it on -- it was magical! I was very pleasantly surprised and have been quite pleased with its performance so far -- I've been running it for a couple of months now. The real proof of the fountain's attractiveness is the number of compliments I've received about it from guests in my home. A couple of friends have mentioned that they intend to buy one for themselves. I've read the other reviewers' comments about the fountain's long-term durability, but so far, so good (see below). I guess the real test is whether I'd replace it should it stop working . . . .

*Update: Well, perhaps I've gotten my comeuppance for writing such a glowing review. I certainly have been delighted with this purchase, but suddenly, only a few weeks after I submitted the above review, the LED candle lights have stopped working. The pump still functions, but the light feature really made this fountain special. I admit, I'm disappointed. I guess the other reviewers were on to something -- it's a pretty little fountain, but it's durability is not good. Would I purchase it again? Not so sure anymore. Think I'll keep looking.

Customer Review: Beautiful and worth replacing when it breaks
Summary: 5 Stars

We've had this tabletop fountain for several years now. I bought it as a birthday present to myself. I love the way the LEDs make the plastic candles glow. Yes, they don't look like real candles, but they do look magical, the way they glow, sending ripples of light across the water that pours from them down to the shiny pebbles at the bottom. I like to keep a reflective light under this fountain to better show off its beauty. It's particularly lovely at night, a lone point of flowing light in middle of my dining room table.

I've read the reviews. One thing that's important to know is that the fountain requires cleaning and refilling from time to time, usually about once every few days. In recent months it started flickering. Sometimes the lights worked, and sometimes they didn't. But a few of the LEDs stopped working altogether, and now none of them do. Still, the water still flows, and it's still beautiful.

I love this fountain. I'm glad I bought it, and I look forward to buying a replacement for my broken one soon. It's simply lovely.

Add on: The LEDs on the second fountain we bought from Walmart broke after a few days, so we returned it for a replacement. That one lasted about a month before the LEDs stopped working. I'm thinking of ordering again from Amazon, because the one I bought here lasted so much longer. I suspect the ones I bought from Walmart might have been returned or were sitting in the warehouse for a while, but I don't know. Anyway, I still love these and plan to buy another replacement despite the problems I've encountered.

Customer Review: Attractive and inexpensive
Summary: 4 Stars

Pros: Attractive, inexpensive, gives off a nice flickering calming light, flameless.

Cons: The motor is loud! I filled the water as high as I could and I could still hear it. I had to lower the speed of the motor half way and that helped some. The sound of the water is almost nonexistent, I had to place rocks in one of the candles and directy underneath where the water drips and then it sounded like a fountain. It also does not come with enough rocks to completely fill the empty spaces.

Overall: This is a decent product for the price. The light it gives off is very soothing for bedtime. I keep it on my nightstand and turn it on when going to sleep, it has helped to drown out the sound of the cars and help me relax. If you're creative in the placement of rocks and experiment with water and motor levels you can make it work out well for you!

I've since purchased the homedics silver springs? fountain and it is soooo much better than this fountain! The pump on this fountain is SO loud in comparison that I don't even like running it anymore and without placing rocks in the middle candle it makes no water sounds whatsoever. Yes it is attractive and it does give off a soothing flicker but now that I have seen what a fountain is suppose to do I think this one really sucks in comparison. They really need to do something about the pump noise on this one! I think it's really a shame because it is quite attractive but the mechanics need to be improved. I would give three stars if I had to do over again.

Customer Review: Old one lasted 2 years, new ones are faulty - both stopped working
Summary: 1 Stars

I had ones of these and it lasted over 2 years. You do need more rocks for it...there are not enough in the kit...go to a craft store and purchase any kind of smooth rocks you like. As to the motor, mine was not too loud unless it was low on water.

My big sticking point was cleaning it. You should use distilled water in the fountain, but for those of you who can't, you need to clean it regularly. Mine was used every night, all night for 2 years and still functioned. The only reason I got rid of it was the fact that I could not get up into the candle area to clean it out. The hard water here made deposits that ended up smelling of dirt after a while. That certainly takes away from the soothing aspect of this fountain.

I want to get another, but after reading some of these reviews, I wonder if my good experience was a fluke or if the bad experiences listed here are.

UPDATE:

I went ahead and purchased two of these. The one in my daughter's room isn't working properly. The lights only stay lit for about 15 seconds and then go off! The pump seems to work fine. This was purchased for her as a night light and obviously isn't useful anymore. Now I am waiting to see if the one I bought and put in my bedroom does the same thing.

I am highly disappointed! Quality is not what it used to be which is why I reduced my rating.

UPDATE:

My other fountain quit within a week of my daughter's. I will never buy another HoMedics fountain again. :(

Customer Review: Not What You'd Expect
Summary: 2 Stars

One of the things I've noticed when I've looked at some of the reviews for different Homedics fountains is that people seem to either really like or dislike them and there isn't much in-between. I side more with those who aren't very fond of them. I purchased this model to bring a little ambiance and relaxation to my apartment and the biggest let-down was the difference between the picture on the box and the actual product. Although almost everything does look prettier in its advertisement, this was very noticeably different (to me at least.) The melted "wax" on the candles looks incredibly plastic and seems less detailed than the photo and the fake drips don't look very much like real candle wax at all. Also, the material of the base in the photo appears to have more depth to it- almost like a brushed metal of some sort, but in reality the dish is a flat, solid brown. I don't have any objections to the item being made of plastic, but I had hoped that it wasn't going to LOOK so fake. The best way I would sum this product up is that if you're looking for a bargain and don't mind a product that looks more or less cheaply made, then this would probably be okay for you. If you're like me and a little bit of a "quality snob" (for lack of a better and kinder term) then definitely stay away from this one.
