Customer Review: This massage chair cannot be beat! It is the best
Summary: 5 Stars

I have seen reviews where people complain this chair hurts them and actually (sorry) I find that a bit funny. You have to position yourself in this cushion to find the way that you would feel comfortable. Just sit down on it easy and try it out to see where you need to be.

Will it give a the best deep tissue massage - Yes.
Will the heat element work extremely well during that massage - Yes!
Will the massage chair position itself against you and turn itself off when the heat gets to hot - No!

I have tried different vibrating gravity chairs and they do not work. I have tried just about ever kind of massager there is and this Homedics Therapist Cushion is by far the best and most superior of them all. I have moderate arthritis, mostly in my upper back and between the shoulder blades, every now and then in the lower back. This cushion takes care of it all, if it is to much pressure I just sit up off of it a little bit, if the heat gets to hot I just switch it off on the remote. It heats up super fast and gets down deep in every spot I need. Remember to at least wear a shirt because the mesh material can feel a little rough, but that material is needed for this cushion to do what it does freely.

Some people are just way to picky and expect everything to adjust for them, which is just silly. For more elderly people, I would suggest a towel between you and the cushion or a different product. This cushion is geared for athletes and those who enjoy a little pain in those troubled sore spots for relief. Sometimes it is true - no pain no gain. The button that allows you to pause the Shiatsu kneeding on your favorite spot is awesome.

I have never had a product work so well and my back has benefited from this product. I feel like a new man, so it gets 5 stars from me.

Also if you sit off the cushion a little and slouch into it you "CAN" reach those high spots near the neck and upper shoulders. Oh yeah

Customer Review: bad experience turns into something great
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I opened this baby the moment I received it. I was really looking forward to using this massaging cushion. I read all the scary instructions with a LOT of cautions. Do not use if you are: pregnant, have a pacemaker, diabetic, or have any concerns regarding your health. I attempted to attach the cushion to my chair with the velcro straps provided but they were not long enough (this should have been my first clue). No matter, it fit nicely in my chair with no sliding. The remote is attached to the cushion and has a easy slot, clever little idea. Finally, I plugged the cushion in and pushed the rolling full back massage button. Ahhhh. It felt good on my lower back but when it got to the middle OUCH and then a distinctive CRACK was heard and I jumped off the cushion. There now was a tear in the upper back portion of the cushion and a slight burning smell. This cannot be good. My attempt at relaxation by using this product lasted for about 20 seconds. I am not a happy camper, perhaps the warranty and/or customer service for Homedics will change my view?

Spoke to Homedics representative who stated that this cushion is ONLY TO BE USED ON AN OFFICE CHAIR. They have it displayed this way in-store but there is no way of knowing this if bought online. They were very helpful and told me to mail it back (at my cost) with the authorization code given for a replacement. Replacement received and it works great. I use this cushion often and there have been no problems. I LOVE THIS THING! It's nice to know that this company stands behind their products!!

UPDATE 6/4/10: 3 years later and this massage pad still works nicely. I use in on a leather office chair around 2-3x per month.

Customer Review: Like sitting in Heaven!
Summary: 4 Stars

"Like Sitting in Heaven" is what I first thought about this massage cushion. It runs straight up and down your back in roller mode, and goes side to side, criss-crossing your back in Shiatsu mode, heat is good too. But using just "dry" heat is bad for muscle as it can dry them out and make them even more sore. So use "MOIST" heat, but not with the unit. Use it separately.
Unit also does just lower, or upper back, in both modes. You can halt Shiatzu and do just one spot. It can also go up or down with "up" and "down" buttons, and get EACH little spot along the way. Unit lights up when in use, red when you use heat, otherwise blue. Lights stay on if not in use and must be unplugged to shut lights off. Should have been when unit is turned off, not needing to be unplugged.
I am 5' 5" and the unit is a little short, even for me. It will not reach the upper back, when sitting on the seat pad....so my solution was to tuck the seat pad up behind the back of the massager and to take a 3-4" pad and block that under the unit. This raises it up and I get the upper back that way. Simple solution.
It can be a hard massage, and can be hard on tender muscles, so sit forward a little to take the pressure off some, or use a towel as described in the instructions. And let the unit do all the work. Other than this I find that my back loosens up and has less pain, and it way cheaper than going to a Masseuse!!!
By the way, just so you know up front. Nothing in this massager actually "ROLLS". It RUBS!! But then that is what a real Masseuse is doing too. I would not say it is "exactly" like my masseuse, it is limited to just the two actions, but you can vary it. It is very similar though and does a good job, I would say.
I give it four stars, for the lights, and being a little short, but other than that my back feels better. I use it 5-10 minutes at a time.

Customer Review: Loosen Up
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
When I first tried out this massage cushion, I was expecting to be pummeled, but instead my muscles were gently rolled from lower back to just below shoulder level.

I can't compare it to a real massage, having never had one of those, but it certainly loosened up my back muscles.

One small problem: The more relaxed my back became, the tighter my neck felt. It's certainly not the cushion's fault, but now I feel like I need to combine it with some sort of Shiatsu neck massager to get all my stress points.

Speaking of Shiatsu, that is the second setting on this cushion. It's just as good as the roller... It gently kneads along your spine. I just wouldn't let the Shiatsu run as long as the roller.

Both settings can be adjusted to massage your lower back, upper back, or entire back. All three settings have their advantages. I could stand it much longer when just my lower back is getting the royal treatment. Also, I can actually type and get things done at my desk. With the full back treatment, don't expect to get any work accomplished. You'll want to just sit back in your chair and zone out for 5 to 10 minutes.

Also, this is not the sort of cushion I would leave in my chair. It's uncomfortable and awkward when not in use, so you'll want to have a safe place to store it when you don't need a massage.

Basically, this cushion does its job. It's perfect for strapping into your chair at the end of a long day for a little loosening up of your back muscles. It's especially effective on the lower back when you turn on the heat function!

Customer Review: masseuse in a box
Summary: 4 Stars

This item works, I like it. It's not a substitute for a real masseuse, or a chiropractor; but it does sit in your living room and work late at night on short notice! I recently have setup a SOHO, and I find that I "walk around less" at home than in the office (ie the water cooler has gone from a 30 yard walk to arms reach) so I found that this homedics massager is a useful part of the routine to stretch, examine posture, take a break from the keyboard/mouse/screen, etc to avoid carpal tunnel and RSI).

construction: everything feels ok, but I wouldn't run it like 15 times in a row with 5 different family members. It might burn up the internal gears and wires, but it does have a 2 year manufacturer warranty, so keep your receipt.

wish list: There is one "demo" button which runs through a little of everything. I wish there were MORE demo combinations, because like a real masseuse, I don't want to "program as I go" I want it to have some routines and I can just gel out and enjoy. So mostly I just keep hitting demo when I use it.

If you like a very low back massage, try experimenting with putting a thick towel on the seat, which raises your lower back up into the range of motion of the rollers. (I haven't found a way to make it reach higher to shoulders and neck, and I would buy next years model if it had 10" more range of motion)

pro: cheaper alternative to spa visits

con: the back mechanism is THICK, so you need a chair with a real deep seat to compensate (think of the distance from the back of your knees to your derriere). My wife did not like having to perch on the edge of the seat when I tried it in a shallow seat, but she votes thumbs up on the purchase.

Also wish it would fit us 6'0" tall people better.
