Customer Review: Nothing like the real thing
Summary: 2 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
It's hard to give an honest assessment of something like this: a machine that, supposedly, mimics human touch, or at least aims to be quasi therapeutic.

The problem, mainly, is its lack of elegance and subtlety. There's the tacky blue glowing balls, of course---which cheapens the whole experience profoundly (it's like you're sitting with your back against a cheap K-Mart stereo). Then there are the massage balls themselves: rough plastic balls that lack any sort of elegance or softness to them at all. The "massage," if you can call it that, is rough, clumsy and not far reaching (the massage goes nowhere near your neck).

In the machine's defense: it's inexpensive, and if you are looking for something to help work out the kinks in your mid back area, in a sado-masochistic sort of way, this machine is not that bad.

I did not purchase this item myself, and now that I am possession of it it's safe to say I wouldn't. But for the price, it's not a total loss either. And I can see why some consumers think this is good item FOR THE PRICE. I have to, mostly, agree.

But if what you are looking for resembles an actual massage---the touch of another human being, or even an approximation---this isn't it. It's nowhere close.

Customer Review: Good Product
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this primarily because my wife's back continually knots up and causes her pain and lack of sleep. We had both used the dual roller model which has been on display at our area Walgreen's pharmacies. They were nice. When I saw a good price on the quad roller model with heat I thought I'd give it a try. I am not afraid to spend a little extra for an added benefit, but I don't spend $150 on a whim, either.

This product does what it advertises. As long as you follow the warning to remove the screw at the bottom of the chair (it apparently locks the moving parts in place during shipping, and the necessary Allen wrench is attached,) the setup is easy and the controls are simple to master.

It took two or three sessions over a couple of days to get used to the massage. I suppose it takes a few applications to undo muscle knots which took years to develop. The heat rises quickly and adds noticeably to the experience.

This product is now part of our nightly routine. It takes fifteen minutes to go through whichever cycle we choose and we sleep better.

As other reviews have stated, we wish the rollers would go up higher on the back. My wife wishes it would go a little lower, too. She'd like to try laying it on the bed and positioning it where she wants, but the product makes no provision for that kind of use. I imagine putting full body weight on the rollers would damage the motor.

Customer Review: Works for a couple weeks...
Summary: 2 Stars

WARNING: I have had two of these massage chairs over the past couple of years and have had the same problem with both of them and have ended up throwing both of them away.

On both chairs, after a couple months of normal use, the massage mechanism starts to make strange noises and the massage turns into nothing more than a loud machine poking you.

After complaining to customer service and requesting a new chair to replace my first one, they promptly sent me a new one. They told me to throw the old one away. Well, about a month later the same issue arose. I have now sent that one to the trash as well. Maybe the newer, non-roller SBM-300H has a better construction -- I don't plan to find out!

If you want a good massage chair and you want it to last, you have to buy one of those ridiculous $4000 chairs...wish I could buy one of those!

Anyway, unless you want to keep returning/exchaning the chair every couple months, I advise against buying this chair. And, sadly, I cannot give you an alternate. If anyone knows of another company that makes Shiatsu massage chairs, please relply to my post!

I gave it a two instead of a 1 because Homedics has excellent customer service -- at least they try their best to make customers happy.

To be clear, I am a 185-pound bodybuilder, so my weight is not an issue in the massage mechanism issues.

Customer Review: Great massage cushion for office chair
Summary: 4 Stars

I tried various versions in a store and settled on this model over the SBM-200H which was great, but this one was more powerful. I like the options on the QRM-400H model. The rolling massage is a great relaxer to start a session. The shiatsu settings really go deeper. I felt this model has more power over the SBM-200H. The rollers on the SBM-200H seemed smaller, or more recessed, so you could leave it in on the chair all the time without discomfort. The next model up has shoulder massagers but I did not like the extra height or placement of the shoulder rollers. I got a Shiatsu massage pillow to take care of shoulders and upper neck. Other great features: The heat option and the option to focus on one spot in shiatsu mode or adjust width in rolling mode. Got this for a great price during holidays.

My only complaints are the 4 "blue" lights in the cushion never go off when plugged in. Perhaps it should be unplugged anyway, but I think I should have the option of leaving it plugged in without it blasting blue light all over the room (wasting electricity!). It also takes several days for the outgassing of fabric and foam parts to rid themselves of the "new product" smell. Those are minor complaints and the reason for only 4 stars.

It works GREAT! So far I am impressed. It is much better than the old vibrating cushions previously sold as massage chair cushions.

Customer Review: Good, but not good enough

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Do I feel better after I use this product? I guess the answer is yes. Do I enjoy using it, or look forward to using it, or feel like it does everything I thought it would? The answer is definitely no.

This massage cushion is designed to be used while you're sitting on a chair or the couch. But it's not as if you can sit down with a book, or watch TV, or really concentrate on anything while you're using it. For one thing, it makes an odd noise that will distract you. For another, the massagers feel like thumbs digging into you, and not in an especially good way. And finally, you'll probably spend a lot of time wondering when the rollers will finally reach your upper back. The answer is never--and that's a pretty annoying fact for a product whose remote contains the words "upper back" not once, but twice.

The bulky cushion is not comfortable to sit on, and it's not especially convenient. If you have an empty chair that you can just leave it on and never move it, this product might be for you. Personally, I'd rather get a chair with built-in massage abilities.
