I'm sorry to say I didn't find the Homedic QRM-400H to be pleasant or helpful. It felt like I was been rubbed with sharp gravel.
There are two basic settings: "Shiatsu" and "Rolling," both with or without heat. The "Shiatsu" massage was simply unbearable; the poking bits felt jagged and way too painful. "Rolling" was less painful, but still not something I'd choose to use. It hit the lower back well, but not much of the upper back. I wish there were a massage machine that could massage the neck and shoulders (but not one that hurts like this one). The unit was noisy and wouldn't be good to use if people are watching television. The heat wasn't very warm; certainly not as warm as an old-fashioned heating pad. I often have lower back pain, but can't imagine using this machine for relief.
Bottom line: This is an expensive gadget that was of no benefit to me.

Lots of settings, powerful motor, and heat make this a very versatile massager. I have used the full size multi-thousand dollar chairs before and this feels just about as strong, although the coverage is a little smaller and options not quite as extensive. I am 6 foot, 200lbs and it is not quite wide nor long enough to reach my entire back. I have had others smaller than me say that it works great for them though, so you need to take your body size into consideration when thinking about this cushion. It is not overly noisy, I can still watch TV with it on and not have to turn it up too loud. It also actually feels pretty good and does seem to relieve muscle soreness pretty well, I have had a bad back for years and this works well for short-term relief. So if you are looking for a new massager that has plenty of power and a good set of features, this is a good choice.Customer Review: just buy it

There are many detailed reviews of the Homedics QRM-400H at this site, so I'm not going to compete: I'll keep it short and sweet.
The QRM-400H is the next best thing to having a live-in Swedish back massage specialist in your home.
Amazing. It's INTENSE. I can't believe they get this much intensity from such a small machine. You might like to try one at CVS or one of the vitamin and supplement stores you find in the malls. The first time I sat on one, I jumped out of the chair, startled, due to the intensity of the massage. I got back on a few minutes later, knowing what to expect, and I was SOLD.
I received my QRM-400H today, and just spent the last 40 minutes on it. This is absolutely the best my back has felt all day, and without question, the best $150 I've spent in ages. I didn't think the unit's rated power was enough to provide a significant amount of heat, but there was plenty of it. I'm a mechanical engineer, and I suspect the rated power specs are incorrect.
An awesome machine. I wish I had owned it last weekend.

From the day we received the Homedics 400H I have been impressed. I have had back pain off and on for the past 10 years. Trips to a chiropractor and the masseuse are too costly and time consuming, so I was excited to find a product that actually could be used in my home. Since purchasing the massaging cushion I have used it numerous times and so have other members of the family. The ability to customize the massage makes it a good fit for anyone. Applying heat and different massage techniques really has helped with the back pain I had been experiencing. Even those who have not had backaches in our family have enjoyed the massage they have received.
My daughter and I tried out the Homedics display at a local retailer. We were very impressed and although I had heard a radio ad proclaiming its effectiveness, I wanted to make sure to get the best price. Searching online gave me the step-up model for the same price.
I highly recommend the 400H for those who want a great massage in their own home. Use it according to the instructions is my only caution to those who purchase the product.

Great massaging action in an easy-to-use chair cushion. The unit is all one piece, with the remote attached (it rides in a little pocket alongside the seat cushion), and it's super-easy to set up. The shiatsu massage is a strong, deep kneading function -- this isn't one of those wimpy little-bit-of-vibration things. One thing I especially like is the adjustable width of the rollers; you can set them wide apart to reach the outer portions of the latissimus dorsi muscles, or move then in close to the spine. Several members of our household, from pre-teens to plus-sized adults, have used the massager for a couple of weeks now & all love it. Other reviewers have mentioned that it's not quite tall enough for people over 5'8" or so; we've found the same thing, which is why I deducted one star. Except for this one fault, it's just about perfect.
