I admit to being a bit skeptical about this product when I first ordered it, imagining it hard to achieve anything like a real massage via something mechanical. I was quite pleased, though, to be proven wrong. The chair isn't a real massage, but when you can't cajole the real one, it serves as a pretty decent alternative, although one of the massage styles is far better than the other.
The positives include:
The shiatsu, which is by far the stronger of the two massage styles. The rollers give you a true massage, kneading your muscles forcefully but not painfully. A nice touch is the ability to pick a "spot" for the rollers to focus on so as to give extra attention to those areas that need it.
The adjustability of the rollers. As mentioned, you can have them focus on a particular area. You can set them to do your whole back (more on the definition of "whole" later) or set them to only the lower back or only the upper back. You can also adjust the width, something I found quite helpful in attacking different muscles as well as for simply variety's sake.
The heat is a nice added touch and feels warm without ever getting uncomfortable.
The device itself is relatively light and folds up neatly enough to be easily carted around for most people.
The "just OK" areas include:
The rolling massage, which is serviceable but no where near the quality of the shiatsu. It's possible this is merely personal--someone else may find the rollers better, but it's hard to imagine. The rolling mechanism never felt as pleasurable and at times was uncomfortable, though adjusting the width usually solved that problem. I've actually not used the rolling massage on my back since the first few trials because I prefer the shiatsu so much. I can't really call this a big negative, though, as I don't really find myself pining for it and I use it for other areas (more on that later)
The ability to place it anywhere. The bottom part of the cushion is relatively big, so you'll need a chair with a decent sized seat so your legs don't hang over the somewhat hard edge of the massage cushion. Our kitchen chairs were barely wide enough as was one of our office chairs. You'll also want a relatively straight back for this.
The negatives
First I should state that while I consider these negatives, they really don't detract all that much from the product. As mentioned as the start, I was pleasantly surprised by how good a job it does and I continue to use and enjoy it.
The massage doesn't quite go high enough in the back and at times I found myself slouching (though only slightly) to try and have it reach higher up. As I'm only 5'4, this may be a much larger problem for someone significantly taller. I'd certainly want to try one of these out if I were six feet tall before ordering one sight unseen.
Misc.
The times I do use the roller massage are actually on my legs. I've had hamstring troubles and they tend to get tight after playing sports or driving long distances. I've found that I can place the massage cushion on the bed or couch and lie with my legs over it. It isn't super-comfortable, but it isn't bad for the 15-20 minutes that I use the cushion. And while one doesn't get the pressure one does by sitting with one's back against the device, it performed surprisingly well--noticeably loosening the tightness/tension in my hamstring muscles. It was a side-benefit I hadn't expected and one which I continue to use.
The remote is easy to operate and quite accessible. The cord is long enough so one needn't track down a chair based on how close to an outlet it is. The machine works quietly enough so that we can watch TV while it is on. And while it hasn't gotten months or years of use, it seems relatively sturdy. It folds up tightly enough to easily slide under a bed or into a narrow storage area.
All in all, I'd certainly recommend it as it does just what it's advertised to do--loosen tight muscles and make you feel much better (so much so that my son will sometimes say "daddy, don't go to sleep!" when he sees me pull it out). The only caveat to the recommendation would be to those who are 5'6 or taller and then I'd say it's worth trying one out to see if it will reach as high as you'd like it to.
