Customer Reviews of Homedics WFL-SLVS Envirascape Silver Springs Illuminated Relaxation Fountain with Natural Stones

Customer Review: Nice for a while, wears out easily
Summary: 2 Stars

I have had this fountain for a year now, so I feel I can write an honest, and well thought-out review. This is a pretty little fountain, very oriental looking and sleek and stylish. It is illuminated, however the lights are not clear, they have an orange glow to them, which takes away from the modern, sleek look of the fountain and makes it look a little cheap. It is small, so that can be good or bad. It's nice for a small tabletop or counter. I kept this fountain running 24/7 look most would want to do. After about 6 months, the motor started making a bad sound, like it was really working hard to run. This is not because I didn't clean it. I cleaned it on a regular basis and even bought some fountain purifying liquid that is safe for fountain motors to help with scum or mold or dirty water. This seemed to help and I definitely think it prolonged the life of the fountain. However, after several months of use, the noise started. Another point; you must keep it refilled. The water evaporates out of the fountain quite easily. I refilled at least every few days, to keep the water level up.
It doesn't make a very loud 'flowing water' sound, so don't expect to hear it all through the house. Only in the room it's in, and only faintly can you hear the water. It's more like a 'trickle'. Unfortunately, earlier this month, I had to stop using the fountain. It became too loud, two of the lights went out, and it just became too much of a hassle. It wears out pretty easily. I know friends who have had more expensive, premium tabletop fountains that have lasted for years, even after constant use. This does not hold up. However, for the price, it's pretty, attractive and sleek. Just buy it knowing that it's not going to last long-term. More like a 'disposable' fountain. Would I still tell people to buy it? Sure! For the price, you can't beat it. It's still a good value, but just a little on the cheap side. But what can you expect for the price?

Customer Review: Fantastic, soothing
Summary: 4 Stars

The instructions and reviews warn you that this device won't work well if you don't take care of it. That means: 1) keeping it pretty full of water, and 2) cleaning it out / rinsing off all the surfaces and stones every week or so. This fountain will more than repay the minimal maintenance effort involved in the ambiance it adds to your room or workplace. Set-up is straightforward; you don't really need the instructions. DO NOT switch the fountain on until you have water in it!

I keep it on the windowsill in my dorm room next to my bed and have it running pretty much all the time I'm in there doing work. You can adjust the stones on the plates to make the trickling louder or softer, and filling the water up just to the brim (on an even surface!) makes for quite a beautiful waterscape when placed in a sunny space or in front of a window.

The fountain doesn't splash much as long as all the plates are in place, and I have had no leakage issues (though the base is all just plastic; so I wouldn't rule out possible leaks). The motor makes some noise, but if you place the fountain on a folded piece of cloth and make sure the water level stays within a centimeter of the rim, the noise is barely noticeable.

The LED lights are a little bright and tacky, and I wish they all lit up through the water rather than down onto it. But I've taped them over with masking tape so they're a little softer, and with a little improv they add a nice touch (and a great nightlight).

In a nutshell: cheap, plasticky, easy to set up, easy to maintain, a great atmospheric touch. Very glad I bought it.

Customer Review: I am pleased to have bought this water fountain
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this product mainly for its relaxation effect on my puppy to mitigate separation anxiety when I start going to work on Monday, July 13. I have placed it in an area where my puppy will be confined. Before buying, I've read reviews about this product. The installation was very easy, and intuitive -- all I had to do was connect the 3 leaves, and put stones on them (no-brainer). I'm using distilled water to avoid mineral deposits that can shorten the lifespan of the pump. I can barely hear the motor. The sound of the trickling water can be heard from as far as about 10 feet, and you can "adjust the sound" by rearranging the stones. For its price of $20, this product looks really good. It does not look cheap at all with the medium artificial lighting that I have. Although it's made of plastic, the silver color actually makes the leaves look like an aluminum. The black color of the stems to some extent hides the plastic appearance. I'm very satisfied not only because it satisfies my original purpose, but also because I ended up liking the relaxing sound of it myself without being disappointed by the appearance, which blends it with my modern theme. What I can't comment about is the longevity of the motor because this is the day when I bought it.

Customer Review: Beautiful Modern Fountain
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this little fountain! It's been going in our house 24/7 for over 2 months, and has worked fine.
We keep it on the floor of our dining room, where the lovely water sound can be heard throughout the first floor of our house. The sound of the running water is very pleasant and relaxing. The water flow is good, and unlike some other fountains the water doesn't get "stuck" on a level but flows continuously through. The illumination is subtle and nice, brighter then a night light mostly because of the water reflections that play across the walls.
The only down side I've found is that it isn't a 360 degree view fountian - the back isn't as attractive as the front, so you will want to keep the back against a wall. For the price, this wasn't a big deal to me.
Overall, it's a great fountain for the money.

Note: when you first get the fountain, it's important follow the instructions to wash both the fountain and the stones well before use. Homedics says most noise problems people report are caused by dust and grime from skipping this step are caused by people who do not do this. Once a week, take 5 minutes to give it a good rinse in the kitchen sink and refill it with clean water, and it will last you a long time.

Customer Review: Not a Good Product for the Money
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this for a friend and assembled it at home. First, the photo on the box looks much better than the fountain itself. The actual unit is merely inexpensive plastic. The lighting, orange in its tint, is generated by a tiny bulb that can't seen if you're standing above eye level. Otherwise, you can see a glaring orange pinpoint of light rather than a diffuse and calming lighting effect. As this unit is likely to be set on a shelf or book case, this can be a problem.

The biggest issue is that the fountain defeats its own purpose. Rather than creating a soothing waterfall acoustic effect, the motor is nearly as loud as the barely audible sound of flowing water. Honestly, sitting at my computer I'm not sure sure whether I'm hearing the hum of my hard drive or the fountain motor. What I can barely here from eight feet away is any traceable sound of water.

There have to be better fountains out there for the money. At the moment, I'm torn between presenting it to my friend with apologies or simply taking the unit back to the store.
