Customer Reviews of Hot Tools Professional Spring Curling Iron for Gentle Curls & Volume-2"

Customer Review: Hot Tools Styling products are the only ones I will use.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have thick hair, but the strands themselves are fine. My hair has ranged from a crew cut to one length down to my knees. Right now, I am growing it back out; it's 3" below my shoulders, all in one length.

I have been using Hot Tools brand professional line styling products for the past 20+ years. I have found that they are the best of the best and will not buy any other. You don't need to preheat these like other irons because they get hot within seconds. I own every size Marcel curling iron from the 1/2" to the 1-1/2" and the spring 2" curling iron as well as their ionizing blow dryer and the interchangeable size hot air brush. The only product I own that's not Hot Tools is my hot rollers, they are Remington Ceramic Rollers. HT didn't make a set that I liked, so I picked these since I needed large rollers. I don't use medium/small ever, and I needed a large set with more than 5 in them. HT does make a set of 12 (Hot Tools Hairsetter 12 pc.), but I don't know of anyone that was satisfied with the set.

Depending on the look you want to create, the best size that I use the most often is the 1-1/2 inch iron. The 2" gives me volume and a bit of curl, while the 1-1/2" gives me volume but more curl and that it's more versatile. When my hair is long, I don't use anything smaller than the 1"--even then, it's pushing my luck because of the curl size and the amount of hair I have. Sometimes I will use the combo of both 1-1/2" and 2" and alternate, so I get more vavoom without looking like an 80s rock star groupie. I can put more hair in the curl and get more of a volume look vs. a curled look. As my irons need replaced, I will be switching to their ceramic line.

This is how I do my hair:

1. I use Ojon Tunu Elastik hair smoothing cleanser and conditioner. Then apply the revitalizing mist leave-in conditioner and toner and then flip upside down and blow out my hair. Sometimes, I dry until damp, then use the hot air brush to style and complete the drying process. If I use the hot air brush, this is where I stop. When I want to add more curl, I just dry my hair and use the irons. When It's dry, I start pulling sections to curl with the iron.

2. I apply the Tunu Elastik flexible finishing hairspray to the underside of the hair section, then curl with the iron. The heat settings I use are 3-4. Always start at the slow settings and work your way up until you find a setting that works for your hair. These irons get very hot and will cook your hair if you don't pay attention to what you are doing. Only the thickest, coarsest hair should use the highest settings.

3. When curling, I start at the crown, roll the top of the head with 1" thick by 2" wide sections and do them left to right and roll back away from the face. The back and the sides are the same size section but it's rolled under with the rollers parallel to the floor. Sometimes for more of a spiral perm look, I roll the hair with the rollers perpendicular to the floor and alternate rolling away/towards the face.

4. Slowly remove hair from the iron then roll it up on a jumbo hot roller. (Before they came out with the jumbo hot rollers, I would use empty pop cans. I learned that trick from my mother. She had thigh-length straight hair and would roll it up on pop cans, then use large hair ties to figure-8 to hold the hair on the can. Put the hair tie over one end, flip the tie over so it crosses over the center of the hair, then secure over the other end of the can.) You can use other types of rollers as well, I just happen to have hot rollers. This is to help set the curl, but also to keep the hair out of the way as I work. I've tried just leaving the curls down as I go but with my hair being so thick and long, I get frustrated. Once I am done and all my hair is up, then I spray my head with the finishing hairspray. I love the hairspray because it's flexible and really holds. It's like I'm not wearing hairspray at all.

5. After doing my make-up I take the rollers out. I don't use a brush or comb on my hair. I just finger-style it. I gently separate the curls and when I'm finished, I spray with the finishing spray again. With the Tunu line, I find my hair holds for my day 10-12 hour shift, then I teach at night for 3 hours. I don't need to touch up unless it's raining or we have a day of high humidity.

My hair is board-straight and won't hold a curl to save my life. I had perms when I was younger, but my hair literally broke off in my hand. I've done the gentlest perms and just do a body wave, but no luck with it.

I've tried everything product-wise over the years and the Ojon Tunu line is the best I've found for my hair-type. It's detergent-free and doesn't harm my hair. It's also super-concentrated, so it doesn't take much. For my hair, I use about a nickel-sized amount, add it to a 2 oz travel bottle, add water, then apply to my hair. It also doesn't deposit wax on the hair like Pantene does. Tunu doesn't lather like other products do since it doesn't contain any detergents. Between Tunu and the ionizing Hot Tools, my hair is super shiny, holds curl and volume all day and just looks fabulous.

Here are my products in addition to the Hot Tools Professional Curling Irons from 1/2"-2" sizes. You also want to be sure to keep your irons clean--don't use anything abrasive! Also, don't use any general cleansers because these will damage the surface of your tools.
