Extensive pleated filter is very effective at capturing dust. I ignore the LED timer and manually check the filters (I own four units). If I can't see through the filters or the air-flow has dropped, I replace the filters.
Whatever you do, don't ignore this filter. If the filter becomes clogged, the motor will make an awful noise and the airflow will greatly diminish. You can get a bit more life out of them by using a high-pressure air gun to blow out the dust (blowing from the inside to the outside) but ultimately, you'll have to replace them as the smaller particles are firmly embedded in the filter.
These filters come boxed as if they're were shipping something fragile and valuable. I saved the boxes since they're thick and great for shipping.
