They don't inform you the gel "Ice" is ready to use. No instructions accompanied the jar. BAD. You lose 2 *s for that no-no. I got the jar with the gel bubbles at the max line thinking this is the distilled water fill line. WRONG! After filling and watching the gel expand to the top of the jar, I said to myself WTF! I then saw the nearly invisible blue writing on the side of the jar [see the lettering in the picture? Same as in real life, hard to read]which stated the jar is ready to use as is. So for the past week it sits on my counter-top evaporating the excess moisture and it looks like I have another 2 weeks b4 I can use it. Grrrr.....
It also is interesting that it uses distilled water where Thompson's Wonder Gel uses humidifying fluid. hmmmm. Why the opposite ends of the humidifying liquid spectrum is beyond me. I'll place this unit in my backup humi with 2 sticks, in a couple of months smoke one stick from the bu humi and one from the my main box. I'll update this post around Xmas time.
So for now, three *s. Maybe more later maybe less. We'll see.
Here it is Jan 2011. This stuff is weird to say the least. I sit next to my humi so I can see the lower shelf facing out hygrometer. One week it's showing 70, the next 60, the next 80, back down to 60 and so forth. Inside on the top shelf is another hygrometer. Keep in mind I re-calibrate them every 2 months. Yeah, a little on paranoia side but these are Western Instrument analogs. The digital hygro's suck as I've gone through several that died in a couple of months and will stick with analog for now. Now, the inside hygro holds steady between 65-70 degrees. Why the discrepancy? At Xmas I gave up on this and went back to my Thompson. Within a week my humi normalized!!
