I am a lactation consultant. One of the mothers I work with constantly complained of painful nipples, plugged ducts at the end of the nipples and mastitis. When she stopped using these pads she experienced great improvement. I think because the pads absorb the leakage and the gel inside thickens there is a resulting barrier to air passing which creates a wonderful warm, dark environment for bacteria to grow.
