Customer Reviews of L.E.D. Fiberoptic Otoscope - Halogen OPHTHALMOSCOPE Diagnostic Kit with Soft Protective Leatherette Case!Customer Review: Very pleased with my purchase A+ Summary: 5 Stars
Super nice otoscope. I am definitely impressed with the brightness of the light and quality of the otoscope. I have been using otoscopes for over 25 years as a family physician and have not used any otoscope before with a light as bright as this one. The otoscope has a really good lens with excellent magnification and an optimal focal length. I actually see clearer with this otoscope than my older otoscope made by Welch Allyn that cost hundreds more. The lens is also glass which should also help it resist scratches. My old otoscope had an acrylic plastic lens that tended to scratch over the years. The otoscope comes with disposable specula but also worked well with Welch Allyn specula that I already had on hand.
The ophthalmoscope is very basic in design. I was not as impressed with it. The retinal focus was adequate but not as clear as my older Welch Allyn. I rarely use an ophthalmoscope in my practice for anything more than checking pupils and the cornea so it really isn't that big a deal for me.For the price the kit can not be beat especially considering the fact a new bulb for my other otoscope was going to cost me almost $40 and I was replacing it every one to two years.
Customer Review: Great For Med Students Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this product to use during physical examinations during my 2nd year in med school, and both the opthalmoscope and otoscope work great.
Opthalmoscope: The light seemed somewhat dim at first, and the scope was missing some of the features that the more expensive scopes had(e.g. colored filters), but the scope worked great. I had no problems visualizing the retina, optic disk, and blood vessels. I used some of my colleagues' much more expensive scopes and could not tell a difference, except for the PanOptic of course. I gave a 4/5 for two reasons. First, the more expensive scopes did have a lot of filters - although i don't know if anybody ever uses them. Second, I thought the scope was a little big. It is the same size as most everyone else's scope, but I just don't see why they can't make it with smaller batteries. AA batteries have 1/3 the capacity of C batteries, but i would be willing the make the tradeoff for a lighter device.
Otoscope: The light was super bright. I don't know what improvements you could make on this, since it is a pretty simple device. 5/5
Customer Review: Okay For The Money Summary: 3 Stars
This product does take C batteries which a little old fashioned. The otoscope has an LED light and is quite bright. The opthalmascope light is not as bright as I would like and is a little trickier to see the retina clearly. You can see it but of course you see only a portion of it (which is the case for most hand held opthalmascopes). In the class I was learning to use these instruments, I was able to try other brands like Welsh Allyn and to be honest they were good but not drastically better. I was not sure if what I had was descent and asked my professor to take a look at them. He said they were fine. I am not using to diagnose pathology only to detect when something is not normal in order to refer out. I would suggest it depends on your needs whether these are the instruments for you. The price is excellent and I think you get better than what you paid for.
Customer Review: Opthalmoscope Defective- Rude Customer Service Summary: 2 Stars
I have no complaints about the otoscope, which has a very bright light & dims in increments using a thumb wheel. So, I feel that it is sufficient for most uses, including clinical practice. But, I was unable to visualize the fundus with the ophthalmoscope. I emailed customer support. Twice. When they responded, I was given immediate instructions on how to return item. So far, so good. Yesterday, I received an email that included an attached explanation from the service technician explaining the defect, including a remark that my opinions were "rather nasty". This was shocking since I had only said that it did not compare to any professional set that I'd ever used and they'd just explained that it was due to a defective. So, why were my opinions "nasty"? Guess they don't like customers who don't agree with them. At least I got my money back.
Customer Review: Very Impressed with the Brightness and Quality of this fiberoptic otoscope Summary: 5 Stars
I am completely happy with my purchase. The otoscope fiberoptic LED is amazing. Very bright light along with a large glass lens allows for very clear visualization of the tympanic membrane. Works better than my old Welch Allan that I paid 3 times more for over 2 years ago. I needed a new bulb for it and it was going to be over $30. I saw this otoscope and I thought I would try it since the bulb is guaranteed for life to never go out. I am very glad I did.
I have not had a chance to use the ophthalmoscope yet but it appears to be good quality. It seems to focus well at +10 diopters on newsprint that is around an inch or so away so it seems like it should work well to see the retina through a dilated pupil. Overall I am quite happy with my purchase and got more otoscope than I imagined for the price I paid.
