For someone with neck pain or other physical challenges that make reading difficult or painful, this product is excellent!! Setup was easy and it functions as advertised. Despite the heavily weighted base, it rolls around easily, even on carpet. Works well on hardbacks or paperbacks. Although my focus is on its use for those of us with physical challenges, it has also occured to me that I could now take up knitting while reading, if I were so inclined!
What you don't see in the picture are the straps holding the book. The metal plate that holds the book has two sturdy velcro straps that run through holes on the top and bottom of the plate and which are threaded through plastic plates that look similar to the weight-distribution pads found on a luggage shoulder strap. You place the front and back of the book under these plastic plates and pull the straps tight. (At this point the pages are free floating.) You then use the arms seen in the picture to hold the pages in place.
Why this and not a simple table top book holder? If you are simply trying to free up your hands for note taking, or looking for a cookbook holder, etc., you don't neeed this. Get a $5 (wire) - $20 tabletop book holder. If, however, you need a book holder with adjustable height in order to avoid extended periods of neck flexion while reading with a book in your lap (or even on a table top), this is the only solution I've found. And yes, if you need full neck support while reading you can use it as shown: lying back and using a neck roll, etc.
Overall, great product, excellent vendor, HIGHLY recommended for those with special needs.
