Customer Reviews of Malem Ultimate Selectable Bedwetting Alarm with Vibration - CamouflageCustomer Review: IT REALLY WORKS!! Summary: 5 Stars
My 5 year old son couldn't get through the night without having an accident. There was no hope on the horizon--he couldn't get through ONE night EVER, without going in his pull-up. In fact, most nights we'd change his pull-up in the middle of the night and the new one would be wet again in the morning.
We tried withholding water; we tried waking him up to go to the bathroom at night; we tried rewards, but nothing worked. He IS only five, so we weren't really worried, but his cousins were all night-trained, and he was starting to get embarrassed. He'd get upset at the store when he saw me buy pull-ups and beg me to put them back. A friend came over to play and as he went down the hall to my son's room, my son physically pulled him back down the hallway and told him to wait in the living room and NOT to come back to his bedroom until he said it was okay. When I went to see what was going on I realized he was hiding his pull-ups so that the package was hidden and none were visible in the trash. I gave him a hug and his little heart was just pounding because his friend almost saw them. It just broke my heart.
I was SO AFRAID to buy this product because of the cost--what if it didn't work?--but it was worth every penny. I'm not sure it's so "high-tech" that it's worth $100, but it was worth every penny in that it actually DID night-train my son pretty quickly, and I know that made a great difference in his life. He feels like a real big boy now. He's proud of himself. I am THRILLED with this product and I encourage other parents to try it.
I showed it to him before we bought it and explained what it did, and he asked me to please buy it for him. I let him pick out the color, though I made sure to only let him choose one that had the vibration option. I was worried about the audible alarm, thinking it might scare him and he'd refuse to wear it, but we tested it out and he chose to use the vibration only, which was easily loud and strong enough to wake him up without the audible alarm. (the vibration itself is loud--I could hear it from the other room.) This worked out well because we also have a baby and I was afraid the alarm would wake her up.
We put his underwear on with the sensor attached to it, and then his pull-up on over the underwear and sensor. This way if he had an accident, we only had to deal with changing the underwear and pull-up, but not the bedding and jammies. He also felt more confident wearing his pull-up. We snaked the wire up under his jammies shirt and out his collar to try and make it safer (I was a little concerned about him getting the cord wrapped around his neck while sleeping.) He was excited about his little device and quickly learned to put it on himself.
The first week his alarm went off maybe once or twice a night, and he'd come get me to help him turn it off and get to the bathroom. (Even if he emptied his bladder in his undies, it's important to go to the toilet and try to put some potty in it, if only a few drops, because that's what it's trying to teach: you have to go potty so you wake up and go to the toilet.) I started to notice that pretty quickly he didn't completely empty his bladder in his underwear. Just like the product says it does, he soon started only wetting his undies a little, and when he felt the alarm he was able to stop his urine flow and put the rest of his pee in the potty. Encouraging!
This went from slight accidents to NO accidents in about 3 weeks. At this point he's been wearing the product to bed every night for about 2 months and we can't remember the last time it went off. After a long time with no accidents, we talked him into stopping wearing the pull-ups over his underwear. Our next step is to get him confident enough to stop wearing the potty alarm. In fact as I write this, this is the first night that he's gone just wearing his underwear and no potty alarm. He forgot to put it on tonight, and I'll tell him tomorrow morning what a success he had without it!
It really works, and it's not that "strange" once you get used to it. I told him that all sorts of men use tools to help them--construction workers, scientists, soldiers--and this was just a different kind of tool. The camo helped too. I'm sure he would have eventually night-trained on his own, but this product helped him feel "normal" and confident, and for that I'd pay a hundred dollars any day!
Description of Malem Ultimate Selectable Bedwetting Alarm with Vibration - CamouflageEverything you need, now in one compact alarm. The Malem SELECTABLE combines light, sound and vibration to help even the deepest sleeper wake. A selection switch can be easily set to sound only, sound and vibration or vibration only. This alarm also has the added feature of allowing you to choose either eight different tones or one single sound. On the eight tone setting, one tone is activated each time the alarm is triggered to prevent audio accommodation, while the one tone setting allows you to choose your favorite sound to hear each time the alarm goes off. The alarm is connected to a clip-on sensor which detects moisture. This new Easy-Clip sensor easily clips and anchors to the outside of any close fitting underwear for boys or girls. NO sewing to hassle with or metal clips or snaps to come undone during the night. Compact, lightweight alarm unit is attached to the shoulder and sounds continuously until the 2-step turnoff is completed. NO mini-pads to buy and attach each night! Sensor contacts are within the clip so skin contact or sweating will not trigger the alarm. The SELECTABLE alarm uses inexpensive AAA batteries that last up to 10 times longer than standard "button" batteries found in nearly all other bedwetting alarms. Look for royal blue and magenta colors, too.
