When I moved into my new apartment, I found that I must have been wearing 'rose colored' ear plugs when viewing it, because I didn't notice the non-stop traffic noise until I was all moved in and tried to sleep...
I'm known to be able to sleep through just about anything. Friends and family have said that I could probably sleep with the bed burning around me. Heck, I've lived along freight train lines and had no trouble sleeping, but I couldn't get used to the constant roar from the trucks and buses passing by my bedroom windows. Becoming increasingly cranky due to lack of sleep, I tried several of the usual remedies to reduce the noise: My fan wasn't the right pitch to cover the bus sounds... Noise reducing curtains don't cover low base sounds, just pink noise... And I cannot wear ear plugs for extended periods. So, getting desperate, I looked into other options.
I purchased the Marpac SleepMate 980A after reading the favorable reviews here on Amazon as well as several recommendations from sleep centers and I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase! I've had it for about three weeks and believe it to be a miracle machine. The fact that the noise pitch can be adjusted made it a snap to find the correct pitch to cover the traffic noise outside my apartment. I do admit that I have to run it on the louder setting near my bed to get complete noise coverage, but I habituated to it nearly instantly and have been sleeping soundly since. Now, each night before bed, I'm switching on my Marpac and giving it a loving pat for the sound sleep I know I'm going to get. PS - it's helped my cat to sleep through the night too!

I've had trouble sleeping because of background noise for years. I finally bought this because I live in a duplex and my neighbors are loud and erratic in behavior, arguing and moving furniture around at 3:00 am. I was afraid to even try to sleep at home after several days with little sleep and my roommate made me buy this because I was ready to move out.
This product is great. It makes a very fan-like sound, but with no mechanical or cycling sounds, or rattling. This is just a constant whoosh. It has two speeds and you can change the sound of the whoosh by changing the postition of the vent holes on the device. It has a switch right on the side of it, not on the cord so it's easy to use. It's even padded on the bottom to make sure it doesn't vibrate.
I used the low setting last night and slept through the night for the first time in the month since the crazy animals downstairs moved in.
I've been relying on ceiling fans and box fans for background noise for years, this is much better. It's a fuller sound, it covers more, and it doesn't make me cold.
As many others have said in previous reviews, this is unlike those pre-recorded white noise sounds. This cannot repeat, because it's actually making the sound as you hear it.
I travel for a living and stay in a lot of hotels. I look forward to taking this thing with me and blocking out the sounds of neighbor's TV's and talking and vehicles, etc. . . It's very small and lightweight, and seems durable.
I don't know why I didn't buy this sooner. Shooting my neighbors is the only thing that would help me sleep better, but this is legal so perhaps a better choice.

I've used one of these for over twenty years. My parents bought one for me when I was young. When I moved out, I had tried several electronic sound conditioners and hated them. I can't sleep to the sounds of electronic waves crashing and birds or crickets chirping. If I want to listen to the birds and crickets, all I have to do is turn off my SleepMate. The SleepMate only makes white noise. You can adjust the tone and volume of the white noise by turning the outside vent covers and changing speeds. It doesn't use a speaker, but has a motor inside that creates the sound. It won't drown out someone snoring next to you, but it does do a good job covering up most background noises so they're not as noticeable.
I bought one for my wife when we were dating. After we got married, we had two so we tried them both at the same time. We put one on each night stand. Wow! It's even better in stereo. It creates a nice pleasing blend of white noise that surrounds you while you sleep. We have purchased extra ones for our kids. But at $50 a pop, the kids only get one each. If they want two, they'll have to buy a second one themselves when they're old enough.
We always travel with one to help block out the hotel background noises. It's hard to sleep with people coming and going all night long or listening to the elevator ding. Some friends that I've recommended the SleepMate to say it can take up to a week to get acclimated to the white noise. For people who already own two, try them on both sides of the bed for a night and you'll never want to go back to just one again. It's like switching from an AM radio to FM Stereo...

The SleepMate may cost more than your standard fan; however, it is well worth the money. I have spent years using fans and air filters to achieve a level of white noise (I use an portable air-conditioning unit so I don't have to worry about fan rattle) and this works as well as anything I have used but without blowing air (and dust) around the room. With its two speeds and adjustable `noise' level you can have just about any amount of sound you wish.
Some observations:
It is expensive. However, how can you put a price on a good nights sleep? And seeing some other reviews, this item tends to last for years, is well made and will not have to be replaced on a regular basis. That is more than I can say for most portable fans. So spend the extra and get an item you will soon become addicted to.
It is small. I will definitely be taking it with me when I am traveling to help make any room I am staying in feel more like home (and block the annoying sounds you usually get with any hotel).
It is loud--at first. When you initially plug it in you will think `This is waaaay too loud!' (especially if you are not use to having any sort of white noise maker). This only takes a few minutes to adjust to. It really is a great background noise generator and makes a constant tone so it does not intrude on the conscious level (or whatever you wish to call your highest layer of awareness). If you focus on it you will still think it is somewhat loud but it quickly slips into the environment as soon as you focus your attention on something else (reading a books, trying to sleep, etc).

I'm a day sleeper who has been using foam earplugs for more than 20 years. The earplugs began to irritate my ears so I had to find something else. I ran across the Sleep Mate while looking for alternatives.
I knew it might not work for me since I like silence when going to sleep and this uses sound to mask noise. Between some great reviews and my ear problems I decided it was worth a try.
The first couple of days it took a little longer to fall asleep than usual but I slept well and adjusted quickly.
It's a smooth fan like sound that has a high/low switch but many different tone and volume adjustments can be made by turning the vents on the top & sides. I used the lowest setting at first and now keep it at a medium volume.
My husband asked if I heard the weed eater in our yard the other day. I was so surprised that I hadn't since I had to turn it up high when the neighbor mowed.
I liked the mask that came with the machine I bought, it's lightweight, comfortable and fairly cool.
The earplugs are gone, my ears are better and I'm sleeping great!
