Customer Reviews of Marpac SleepMate 980A Electro-Mechanical Sound ConditionerCustomer Review: Fall Asleep, Stay Asleep Summary: 5 Stars
I have been a third shift worker for almost three years now. The worst part about it is trying to sleep through the daytime noise and bright light. I have tinted windows and shades that keep the light out, but never really had anything to combat the noise except for a fan. The fan was very loud, used a lot of energy, and caused the room to become quite dry.
Enter the Marpac Sleepmate. From the first day I purchased this product, I haven't had trouble falling asleep. I used to sometimes leave the TV on for background noise, but the light from the TV affected my sleep. The sound this little machine makes is wonderful, and the best part is that it's adjustable to suit your desired white noise preference.
I have it placed about 15 feet from where I sleep, and it fills the room with gentle rushing air. Since purchasing this, I've noticed that my electric bill has gone down in price. It's a win/win.
To top it off, my girlfriend loves it. She turns it on before going to sleep. The cost might seem a little pricey to some, but you get what you pay for: a quality device that actually works.
The only "minor" complaint I have is the actual look and color of it. It's kind of bland. It would've been nice if they went with a matte/glossy casing as black usually goes with everything. It's a bit of an eyesore, but it doesn't matter because this device is a lifesaver.
From taking 30 minutes to fall asleep and being restless while sleeping, to falling asleep in under 5 minutes and sleeping until I wake up. This product is highly recommended.
Customer Review: Better than a fan Summary: 5 Stars
My first reaction to this thing was, they charged me HOW MUCH for a fan in a dinky little plastic housing? This thing is tiny! But man, it works. I have a hard time falling asleep when it's dead quiet. I need a sound floor so that I don't wake up every time a dog barks or my significant other gets up to use the bathroom. So any kind of a fan or white noise machine works as long as it produces a consistent tone, which the Marpac does, since it is, after all, a fan. But it doesn't blow air and it doesn't generate more than a small modicum of heat, either.
I appreciate the adjustability of the Marpac. Twist the top, and it changes the amount of airflow sound. Twist the body, and it changes the amount of white tone. Both of these settings are infinitely adjustable so you can tune it as finely as you want. There are also two speed settings, but I always use the high setting.
The best thing about it is that it's efficient in the way it masks sounds. Rather than completely covering up all noise by blasting the ears with a wall of thrashing noise, it gently mutes and takes the edge off them. The giant St. Bernards next door sound like they're a mile away and on the other side of a lake. It's more efficient and it's also easier on the ears - sleep with a great big fan for long enough and it will slowly eat away that range in your hearing.
I used to be quite the insomniac. I rarely slept more than 3 hours a night in college. If I was going to do it again, I would bring my Marpac along with me - I would have gotten along with my roommates so much better!
Customer Review: Does What It Claims To Do Summary: 4 Stars
We ordered this for our daughter who has trouble falling asleep when she can hear other people awake in the house. I was worried about the many reviews that said it was too quiet, but that has not been our experience. If anything it's on the loud side. Even on low I can hear it through her closed door two rooms away. On high it's loud enough to be annoying. I agree with other reviewers who said the overall sound is like a bathroom fan. I would also agree with those who say it isn't true white noise. The wind noise it makes can be adjusted to be relatively pleasing and neutral (although it does sound a bit rushed due to the smallness of the chamber), but unfortunately the actual fan is also audible, and has a higher pitch. A little like a far away hair dryer. Overall it works for our needs. It masks noise, and reduces distractions. If she tries, our daughter may still be able to detect the murmur of a conversation elsewhere in the house, but she certainly can't hear the actual words. Noises in general are muffled enough that they are no longer distracting. For those who are looking for something to completely remove the sound of loud TVs, horns honking, and so forth I'm not sure what to tell you. Anything that does that will be very loud itself, and too loud for the average person. The unit is small, simple, adjustable, and does what it claims to. I wouldn't say it's perfect since I'd like a "whiter" white noise and more than two volume settings, but on the other hand we haven't found anything better. If you're looking for a sound screen, that's exactly what it is.
Customer Review: Two Thumbs Up Summary: 5 Stars
These are my thoughts about the Marpac White Noise Machine 980 after having used it for several weeks.
It produces a very pleasant, soothing sound and the volume can be adjusted very quickly and easily. We prefer to keep it on the low setting which blocks most ordinary noise. Very loud sounds can still be heard and that is a good thing, in my mind. If someone is taking an ax to my front door, I want to hear it.
It is very easy to use. You won't have to study a manual to learn how to use it. To me, this is a wonderful plus because I just don't have time to study yet one more manual to learn how to operate one more appliance!!!
It takes up very little space on our dresser; it is about the size of a small cake. The next time we stay in a motel, I am taking it with me, for sure. Our last motel stay was ruined by the noise from the night-owls in the room next door. My little Marpac is going to put a stop to that.
Some people think the Marpac costs too much but then you have to ask yourself how much you are willing to pay for a good night's sleep. I figure we will have it for years. Yeah, it's awful that the price of everything is going up. Anymore, I am very careful about where the money goes. We all have to be, don't we?
Overall, we are very pleased with this purchase. I have one little complaint. The machine will rattle slightly if it is placed on an uneven surface. That's really not a big problem but I thought I'd mention it. I would recommend this machine to anyone.
Customer Review: It BROKE and now I CAN'T SLEEP!!! Summary: 5 Stars
My SoundMachine stopped working, just shut off, after 9 years on the job. I bought this magnificent little device over 9 years ago when we lived next to a highway with truck traffic noise so that we could get a good nights sleep. We packed up and moved to suburbia 3 years later and this little machine moved along with us even though I just knew I would not use it in our peaceful country setting. The first week or two in our new abode we slept with our windows open and listened to the sounds of the night critters in the trees caressing us with the tranqillity of the country. It wasn't long though before I brought the magic machine out of hibernation to blend away the tree frogs, katydids, prowling cats, barking dogs, a braying donkey (yes!) and even a rooster crowing. I turn it on EVERY night just before I turn out the light. It protects my dreams from a snoring husband, late night garage door opening & kitchen clatter of roaming teenage kids. The only thing that has managed to get past the soft drone of bliss from the Marpac is the cat fight that occurred under my bed. My husband manages to sleep late on weekends and he blames it on my "death machine".
I am posting my review after all these years of taking my Marpac SleepMate SoundMachine for granted. It has failed me now and I cannot sleep without it - read, white noise addiction. So, I have signed in to Amazon today to purchase another. My calculations show that it cost me about $.46 a month for restful sleep. I hope my new one lasts as long!!!
