Customer Reviews of Marpac Sleepmate 580A Sound Conditioner Single SpeedCustomer Review: We're getting ready to purchase our third... Summary: 5 Stars
The proof is in our purchases...five years ago when my first son was born we purchased this soundmaker. When my second arrived two years later, it was a no brainer that we would purchase another. These soundmakers provide just enough white noise that it covers up extra sounds (barking dogs, siblings playing, etc.). My fourth child is due in July, so we're getting ready to purchase our third. The first one was purchased five years ago and is still going strong. We are very pleased with this product as you can tell by our loyalty. I recommend this product with no hesitation.
Customer Review: simple and straightforward does the trick Summary: 4 Stars
We purchased this item to use in my son's room to generate white noise while he sleeps. We had been using a small fan but with the advent of cooler weather, didn't want to keep running it. I like that the unit is very small and simple. I think that it helps create a 'layer' of sound that helps other household noises and street noise stay more in the background. So far, so good. It turns out we have a friend who has the same model and has been using it for years. We hope that ours will be similarly durable and long lasting. We plan to even pack with us for longer trips!
Customer Review: Not quite "white" noise Summary: 3 Stars
My wife wanted a white noise generator to drown out the early-rising birds outside our bedroom window. So I bought a SleepMate 580A about a month ago. It does cover-up the bird sounds. But as other reviewers have noted, it's quite loud - if I don't use earplugs, I wake in the morning with ringing in my ears. But my real dissatisfaction is that within the nice whooshing white noise, you can distinctly hear the hum of the fan motor (60-cycle hum). Maybe my unit is defective, or maybe I'm more sensitive to motor hum than most people. I'm going to try the Marsona 1288A.
Customer Review: As good as reviews indicate Summary: 5 Stars
I mainly got this for my girlfriend who insisted on sleeping with the ceiling fan on, even when it was freezing in the house. I was skeptical with this unit at first and I'll admit the first night I don't think I got any sleep at all. But after that its worked wonders for both my girlfriend and I. I actually am disappointed when we are away and we have to sleep without it. It sounds like a combination between water running through pipes, a fan, and that high pitched sound you hear when you are on a jet airplane. It is very soothing and helps drown out unwanted noise.
Customer Review: Not loud enough for us Summary: 3 Stars
This is a nice little machine if you travel or if space is an issue. If you have never used a fan or white noise machine to help you sleep, it might be enough for you. We are used to the noise that a Honeywill HEPA air cleaner makes, which is quite a bit louder. The Marpac 580A has one speed: High (loud) but it didn't mask the sound of the TV in the next room, a party next door, or cars revving their engines outside. We returned it and bought a new air cleaner. It was more expensive, heavier and larger (the size of an ottoman) but I guess we need the "turbo" speed noise.
