Customer Reviews of Marpac Sleepmate 580A Sound Conditioner Single SpeedCustomer Review: Best sound machine Summary: 5 Stars
We have slept with a sound machine in the bedroom ever since we lived next to a hideously ill-behaved family and their sad, ignored beagles. Both the humans and the beagles were noisy and disturbing at many points during each evening and night. When we moved to a new home after 1 year of neighboring with these people/animals we kept the sound machine in the room as we had grown used to the pleasant white noise.
Having purchased many different types and brands of sound machines over the last 15 years, I can say that the Marpac Sound Conditioner is by far the best one ever. The sound it produces is like having a fan on in the room, without having the cold air chilling the room during freezing Michigan winters. The sound is not a recording like so many sound machines have. Sometimes those white noise recordings have an annoying audible loop noise that can be really irritating. Not so with the Marpac unit. It actually produces the white noise when you turn it on, and it is a lovely, soothing, relaxing white noise that cancels out any distracting or disturbing noises from the sleeping area. The Marpac 580A is fine for a average/smaller sized bedroom. I would recommend the Marpac 980A 2 speed unit for master bedrooms and larger sized sleeping areas.
Customer Review: Really good basic white noise Summary: 5 Stars
I am somewhat of a white noise junkie. I have tried fans, electronic machines and even a nebulizer to achieve deeper uninterrupted sleep. I discovered this machine when I was visiting my sister's house and needed to put my baby down in the other room. She told me this machine had worked really well for she and her husband and so I bought one. My little one did really well with it running, and did not hear the mayhem of my neices's fourteen year old birthday party. It is a really basic machine. It has an on/off switch and twists to adjust the loudness of the noise. What I really like about it, although it can't be turned up as high as some of the electronic machines, is that the white noise is really truly white noise. I don't know if you have ever noticed but on some of the machines that allow you to choose a variety of noises, the white noise setting is on a sound loop and if you are lying awake and listening closely you can hear it. This is just good pure white noise. Not a recording of it. It is a great machine. It works for my baby and it works for me, and its not too big to throw in the suitcase for travel. Will be using this from now on. If you just need good basic white noise, this is the machine for you.
Customer Review: Perfect white noise machine Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a college student living in the dorms, which as you can imagine is not the quietest environment. I have used earplugs or left my TV on to drown out the shrieks and slamming doors in the middle of the night, but was looking for a more practical solution. This white noise machine is the answer! The volume is adjustable from fairly quiet (although still good at covering noise) to quite loud, and you can change the tone (I find one end sounds a little like a vacuum cleaner, the other like a large fan, and of course the intermediate modes cover everything in between). You can easily hear an alarm even at the highest volume. Turning the machine on and off is simple, adjusting tone or volume is just a quick turn -- this thing couldn't be easier to use. And best of all, I've slept like a baby every night since I bought it! No more waking up in the middle of the night to some noise outside my door and being unable to fall back asleep; no more trying to study while the girl next door yells and carries on with her friends. This thing is a lifesaver for anyone trying to sleep or read through distracting noises. I highly recommend it.
Customer Review: Sleep tight and be patient Summary: 5 Stars
I live in a large townhouse development and unfortunately the downside is that I have neighbors on
either side of my unit. I have difficulty getting to sleep on some nights when either a dog or
nearby party is just too loud. I have air conditioning in my main living quarters and use a fan
in my bedroom to try and create a sound shield against any outside noise.
One of my friends told me about white noise generators and after a bit of research I found the
sleepmate product. The model I chose was made by marpac and this particular model creates a
very soothing background noise that somehow blocks out all background noise including the yapping
dog next door. You do need to get used to the sound that this unit makes and after about a week
I was sleeping like a baby. You are able to adjust the setting in terms of the pitch and volume
and once you adjust to the white noise that it produces try turning it off in the middle of the
night. You'll be truly surprised at just how much extraneous noise it really does block.
Customer Review: Can't sleep without it Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not sure what I could say that hasn't already been said. I used to use a fan to help block the outside noise while I slept since I worked the night shift but the biggest problem with the fan was that I hated the air circulation because I would always wake up with a dry or sore throat. About ten years ago I came across the SleepMate 980 and bought one and I wished I had done it a LOT sooner. My 980 has been going strong for the last ten years but I just bought a SleepMate 580 as a backup just in case anything ever happens to my 980. I recently had a power outage that lasted about 8 hours during my sleep time and I realized how hard it is to sleep without it. For those who were unaware, the SleepMate 580 is exactly the same as the SleepMate 980 except it only has one speed - which is the equivalent of the high speed on the 980 (which is the only speed I use on my 980). Physically they are exactly the same and you wouldn't be able to tell them apart except for the on/off switch.
