I read a lot of reviews before purchasing this and I'm happy to write that the positive reviews were accurate.
I accidently ordered the 580A instead of the 980A, but decided not to return after reading that the low speed on the 980A was not very useful and few ever used it. The 580A gives off a mixed sound of static and fan sound and does an excellent job of blocking and minimizing the noise from the TV when my partner is in her office. I'm only about 20 feet away from her and with the door closed I can crank the TV up to over 17 on the volume meter. Way louder than I usually turn it up (12 or 13 is normal for me).
The only things it doesn't block well are distinctive noises, like talking on the phone, although I do have a rather loud and projecting voice.
I would definitely recommend this and will probably buy another one for the bedroom when one of us goes to bed while the TV is still on.

I actually got this machine because I get distracted by noises around me when I am trying to focus on an assignment (be it work or school). Even with being in a separate room with the door closed, your still able to hear voices and sounds. It wasn't an option for me to have an empty house every time I had to work on a project but if people were home and talking or of they had the TV on - it was just inevitable that I'd hear the TV for one second and then it was like my brain tuned into the TV and the muffled sound from rooms away took my attention from what was right in front of me.
Now, when I have work to do, I plug in this sound machine and it makes a non-annoying noise that just blocks out any background noise (like people, radio, TV, etc). Now this is an essential for me. I pretty much plug in my laptop and my sound machine at the same time!
I would most defiantly recommend this product!

After using an older model in my office (I'm a therapist). I wanted one for sleeping at home.
This doesn't allow for much customization. You can turn it slightly to adjust the airflow and get slightly different sounds... but it's pretty straightforward. Volume is not adjustable. It does a great job drowning out household noises and I love the sound. I find it soothing, and similar to a small hairdryer (without the high-pitched tinney sound.)
Our toddler ended up getting it from us- because he needed it more. And I miss it!
Our friends' children spent the night here and they also thought it was really cool and looked into getting one too. So if you're looking for a straightforward white noise machine, that is pleasant and without "glitching" I recommend this one highly! If you're looking for a machine that will allow for volume/tone adjustment, this probably isn't the right one for you.

My husband and I have used this every night for more than 8 years. We bought it when we were living in an apartment complex with very thin walls and were disturbed at night by noise from neighboring apartments. We'd never have survived living there without our SleepMate.
When our daughter was born nearly two years ago, we bought one for her room. She has been sleeping through the night since three months of age and we owe a great deal of the credit to her SleepMate.
We're expecting a son in a few months and just ordered one for his room as well. Babies thrive on white noise when they're learning to sleep, as it reminds them of the environment in the womb.
This little machine is a workhorse. In more than 8 years, we've never needed to perform any maintenance on ours. It has been with us through three moves and countless overnight trips. We can't sleep without it. It's that good.
Customer Review: Don't Waste Your Money

My husband and I are both nurses and routinely work night shifts. Whoever is not sleeping during the day is running our household with three children. I purchased the Marpac because of its wonderful reviews and actually kind of "blew off" the few negatives I read. What a mistake. While it is small and has varying pitches of sound easily adjusted by twisting the outer shell of the unit, it is absolutely NOT loud enough to cover everyday household noise. During the day I "slept", I heard my children playing, the microwave and kitchen doors closing, our garage door going up and down, the garbage truck, and the school bus (just to name a few). This unit is perhaps suitable if you only need it at night as white noise to sleep better, but if you are a shift worker who needs it to cover noise during the day, skip it. I am purchasing another Honeywell fan to replace the one I've had for the past 10 years and cost me $15.
