Customer Reviews of Marpac Sleepmate 580A Sound Conditioner Single SpeedCustomer Review: The best one available Summary: 5 Stars
I researched many white noise machines and read many reviews before deciding on the Marpac 580. The 580 is less expensive than the 980 with no speed adjustment, but it performs quite adequately, and truthfully the speed control is unnecessary. The Marpac machines operate mechanically rather than electronically, which in my opinion is a more reliable way to go. Also these machines don't experience sound or volume problems like other brands. The adjustable volume and tone can accomodate a very large room. The average bedroom requires much less than its maximum volume is capable of. The 580 is simple, basic, and sturdy. It performs well not only for children but adults too, drowning out typical city background noises. We like it so much, we have purchased two...and now my mother wants one. Everyone who has used it has remarked on how uninterrupted their sleep is. I highly recommend the Marpac 580
Customer Review: Good for Sleeping Baby Summary: 4 Stars
Our circa 1923 house has terrible squeaky wood floors, and all of our kids walk like elephants, so it is really tricky to keep a baby asleep. After reading reviews on several sleep-machine products, we decided the SleepMate 580A sounded like our best bet. We have been using it for about 3 weeks now, and we are very satisfied. It sounds a lot like a vaporizer running. I honestly expect to feel a cool mist when I walk past it. In our opinion, it is too loud to have right in our 12x12 bedroom, but the amount of noise it makes sitting right outside the door is perfect. You can still hear all of the other noises in the house (I still know when our teenage son gets home at night.), but the constant humming keeps other noises from being such a jolt to your system and waking you up. I really do think the baby is sleeping better. I would recommend this for anyone trying to sleep through noisy situations.
Customer Review: Good for sleep or study Summary: 4 Stars
Very good product to help you sleep or study in semi-noisy environment. I live with two other roommates and it allows me to sleep all the way through the night even when they are right outside my room in the kitchen. Also, if I'm taking a test or trying to study I can turn on the machine and be able to concentrate. The only time I have an issue with the SleepMate is when I already have a headache and go to sleep; I will always wake up with the same headache that I went to sleep with. This probably won't apply to everyone though. Another feature that is nice is the noise level settings. It can be a very quite sound that you will barely notice or something that will drowned out the sound of cooking or TV in the room next to you. Overall, I recommend this product. It is very relaxing and helpful for a sound night sleep or in a situation when you need to concentrate.
Customer Review: Drunk neighbors heard no more Summary: 5 Stars
I have to say that apartment living in southern California can really be a drag. We are all piled on top of each other - much like the barrios that are found along major waterways in central and south America. My neighbors are really loud drunks and they have a pitbull that also is a loud drunk. I also have neighbors on the other side who insist on playing ping pong until 2am. My two small and impressionable children have always been woken up by these neighbors shenanigans. I purchased the Marpac Sound Screen 580 with hopes of drowning out the loud laughter and the sound of crushing beer cans. I could not have been more pleased with my purchase. My children can sleep through the night as if we lived in a normal neighborhood. They are better rested and I am sleeping better knowing that the Sound Screen 580 is lulling my kids into a deep and satisfying slumber.
Customer Review: It's fine, wish it had a bigger range of "noise" Summary: 4 Stars
This product seems to be working fine. Several comments suggested it was "too loud" or "not loud enough," even when fully adjusted one way or the other. I agree--I wish it was louder. One thing I did that helped was to remove the foam cushion on the bottom of the device--it does not have any scratchy surfaces so that was not a concern.
We have two fans in the house--one is a floor model and one is a table-top model. Just for comparison, the "Marpac" device is maybe only half as loud as either of those two fans--it only creates the same amount of sound, in my opinion, as one of those small clip-on fans.
This device is definitely more portable than a fan, though, which is great for travel.
If anyone finds a similar device to the Marpac that's louder, or if Marpac comes out with another model, please post to the discussion.
