I bought the sleep mate about two months ago. Before the sleep mate, I had tried other noise machines, as well as ear plugs. The other machines only distracted me and kept me awake (falling asleep to the sounds of a thunderstorm? Really?). As soon as I turned this little gadget on, I was immediately soothed. It sounds just like my air conditioner (I live in NYC where window units still exist). All the street sounds that normally keep me awake (car alarms, horns, the occasional screaming fight) seemed as if they were happening miles away. It was amazing. I bought this, because I got tired of having to use a fan to get that white noise I need to sleep. If all I want is the noise why should I have the breeze to contend with too?
I like the sound it makes, because it reminds me so much of the fan I used to use. It's not so loud that it blocks everything out completely, but I wouldn't want that anyway.
The big plus is a super long cord, and a small form factor; these facts make it great to take with you on trips. Nothing is worse than trying to get to sleep in a hotel room without some sort of noise. No more having to set the radio to static or turn on the bathroom fan (which most places don't even have anymore).
I'm so pleased that I'm going to buy another one for our daughter's room.
Customer Review: Works good, be wary of EMF!

This device was pretty good, the kids loved sleeping with it running. Then I purchased a Gauss meter and discovered a whopping 400.0mG of EMF radiating from it.
Considering that most countries recommend nothing higher than 1.0mG, and anything over 10.0mG is considered an extreme cancer risk this is completely unacceptable.
The EMF declined rapidly as the range from the device increases, effectively dropping to 0 at 6 feet. However people that put this on their nightstand should immediately rectify that situation! The fact of the matter is, all electrical devices should always be a minimum of 5 feet away from the body in bedrooms.
Even so, I question the engineering of this device if it emits such a drastic level of EMF.
Customer Review: Great White Noise - Sounds Just Like a Fan

If you are one of those people who needs to fall asleep with some sort of white noise in the background then this product is for you. Normally I just leave a fan on all night purely for the sound, but in the winter that gets to be a little difficult so I turn to this little guy. It's rather heavy when you first hold it, but once you plug it in you can immediately tell that it produces the perfect white noise sounds that almost mimics a fan. There are some parts of it that turn/slide so you can make the noise loud/soft, but I tend to leave it on the softest level. The unit despite being heavy is small enough that you could easily throw it in an overnight bag if you're going to sleep over with the in-laws who snore or with the friends with noisy kids.Customer Review: Haven't had 3 consecutive nights of sleep in years...

I was dubious to say the least, but willing to spend a few bucks to try something that "might work". I plugged the contraption in and fiddled with the adjustable ports. You can change the pitch and volume to some extent by restricting waves from the ports in the Sleepmate. Have to say that I haven't experimented much with the adjustments. I have had the Sleepmate for 4 days and I've now had 3 nights with 5+ hours of sleep - believe me that is astounding. I had been taking Lunesta for a year and I've not used it since. I think this is the ticket -- for me, anyway. Good luck.
