My mother in law thought it was reduculous to spend more that twenty bucks on one of these because she got one that has ocean sounds... birds.. ect. But all those other machines have that creepy digital sound for white noise...and the waves inevitably break and the birds stop chirping as soon as the car alarm goes off in the street. This is the only sound we need!
We bought it for our 3 month old daughter because we live in a noisy part of the city and our neighbors kept waking her up. She slep great from day one... now we use it as part of her bedtime ritual.. bath, jammies, book, SLEEPY MACHINE... and off to sleep she goes!

I was disappointed with this sound machine. We had one years ago when our son was a baby, and it worked great. I loaned it to someone and never got it back, and finally replaced it with a different model. When that one finally died, I decided it was time to finally spend the money to get another Marpac. I read the reviews that cautioned about not being able to adjust the volume, and boy, were they right---even with all the adjustments cranked down, it was still far too loud for our small bedroom. It is well made and I know they last, but the sound was too intense. I'm thankful for Amazon's good return policy.Customer Review: Definitely helps block out other noises so I get a good night's sleep

I have a Great Pyrenees, a nocturnal, guardian dog breed, who barks a lot at night. I want her to protect me and my other two dogs at night, but her barking was keeping me awake. The "white noise" sound machine has really helped me get a good night's sleep, yet doesn't block out all noise, so I'm not worried that I wouldn't wake up if there was some kind of emergency. Because I have a home office, I also use the machine during the day at times to tone down the noises of neighbors' dogs, cars, etc. so I am able to concentrate and get my work done. This is a very helpful machine at an affordable price.Customer Review: Works well.

Purchased for ADD son who needs something to block out distractions when trying to go to sleep. Was pleased to find this as I had one of the original units like this that I inherited from my great-grandfather (I used it because I could never get used to sleeping without a window unit air conditioner in the fall and winter months). The older unit was actually a little louder than this new one but it seems to work fairly well. It helps my son fall to sleep most nights but doesn't necessarily KEEP him asleep...but then that's not what it's supposed to do.
All in all a great device.

This is the premiere of sound machines. Creates very loud (if desired) yet pleasant white noise. Started out using in the baby's room, and now it is also a mainstay on all our trips. It is really great for hotels or cramped quarters with relatives/friends! We recently used on a trip with our friends; their toddler and dogs were one room over with very thin walls. Nothing woke us the whole night thanks to this sound machine. It's a little pricier than others out there but worth it for the quality. I have baby #2 on the way and have purchased a second unit for his bedroom.
