Customer Reviews of Mavala Stop - Helps Cure Nail Biting and Thumb Sucking, 0.3-Fluid Ounce

Customer Review: It really works!
Summary: 5 Stars

This product is amazing! I have been chewing on my cuticles for at least 10 years and have never had anything work like Mavala does!

I used to chew on my cuticles CONSTANTLY throughout the day, which left my fingers bleeding, raw, and horrible to look at by the end of every day. In fact, I envied people who chewed on their nails because their fingers looked light years better than mine did! I didn't realize half the time when I was chewing on them, which definitely makes it hard to break the habit. At first I tried to have my boyfriend and other friends just stop me when they saw me, but they can't watch me all the time, and I just got really good at waiting for them to stop looking. After trying some other creative ways of breaking the habit, I decided to purchase Mavala Stop to see if it would deter me from putting my fingers near my mouth. Did it ever! The taste is NASTY (which is great for reminding you to stop) and it lingers for a while on your lips and tongue afterward for at least a few minutes. This is great for me because it just reinforces the lesson even after, which means I am less likely to attempt to chew again. I swear I would try to convince myself that it wasn't so bad, but when you have the taste still on your lips for a while there is not way to deny that is it gross. I am proud to say that my cuticles are healing up wonderfully and I am less likely now to try to put my fingers in my mouth. There is enough nail polish in the bottle to last you until you have permanently broken the habit too, so you don't need to worry about a temporary fix and then when you run out falling back in the habit. The polish is not very noticeable either, just a little shiny at first and then dulls after a day or so.

A few things to note though: The first day I used this product, I put a lot of it on and all over my cuticles just for safe measure. I don't put any more on my cuticles just because it was too much, but it was a great shock factor to teach me not to do it any more. I would say though be careful with children because it will be REALLY bad if they put their whole nail in their mouths without realizing it. The taste also lingers on your lips if you touch them (which is really disgusting while eating food), so be careful when you freshly apply the stuff. And for adults, slather it on every 2 days with someone else to watch you, since it would be easy to "forget" to put it on without a support system to make sure you follow through. Seriously though, I carry this stuff in my purse and I have not had a problem! I dread the thought of chewing my cuticles cause I know I will get a nasty taste in return!

This product would probably also work for kids who has issues putting different stuff in their mouths (fingers, boogers, blankets, toys, etc) or with pets chewing on things. Be creative and give this product a try, you won't disappointed!

Customer Review: Thumb Sucking Stopped Immediately!!!!!! Thrilled Mom and Child!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have never written a review on Amazon before, but feel that if you have a child who can't stop sucking his/her thumb: read this!

My six year old daughter sucked her thumb very often. She could not be stopped: in the car, watching t.v., at bedtime. Basically, if she wasn't talking or using her hands, her thumb was in her mouth. We tried bribery, we tried a band aid, we tried a glove. Then I brought a product called Thum that I saw at the drugstore. This is also painted onto the fingernail. She could wash it off (and did so at school) and it faded quickly so the spicy cayenne pepper taste would lessen and she could tolerate it.

I was ready to order a hypnosis CD to assist with breaking the habit, via Amazon, when I found a link to Mavala. I read a handful of reviews and besides one unhappy parent. It seemed this might be the product that worked. My dentist said once her permanent teeth started coming in she would need to cease the sucking. We had considered having a retainer-like instrument put in her mouth that blocks the thumb from fitting in, though my dentist even described it as "cruel" and "a last resort".

I applied the product to my daughter's thumb and she struggled emotionally when she realized, after tasting it, that she could no longer suck. A few tantrums occurred which we assist her through by distracting her with book reading, a bubble bath and lots of love and encouragement. She insisted that she couldn't have her blanket because it gave her the desire to suck even more.

The taste: I touched my tongue to her nail and the taste is truly awful, a sour acidic chemical taste that dulls the tip of the tongue and then the taste shoots down both sides of the tongue. It lingers for quite some time.

I took the advice of another reviewer and kept a glass of water by her bedside, When she would unconsciously suck her thumb while sleeping the putrid taste would wake her up and she would drink the water and fall back to sleep.

It is day 6 and my daughter is doing fantastic. She doesn't like to talk about it, but her confidence is visible and my husband and I are overjoyed! I know first hand the difficulties thumb sucking can cause, I sucked my thumb until I was 12, so the desire I know, is strong. I went through braces, neck gear and needed to be re-taught how to swallow properly via a speech therapist. Try this product! MAVALA Stop for Nail Biting and Thumb Sucking

Customer Review: WOW. This stuff is DISGUSTING (good!)
Summary: 5 Stars

I would like to note that I do not recommend this for babies or small children because it is REALLY REALLY disgusting. I would try a simpler formula first such as THUM (which is just basically Cayenne Pepper) or other alternative methods.

First, I want to explain that I have been an extremely heavy nail biter for my entire life (25 years). I am the kind of person who bites their nails all the way to the cuticle to the point where they become deformed and only have a thin layer of skin (no nail) - I've basically lost any sensation of pain in my fingers. This is not to brag, be graphic, or to disgust anyone; it is just to give you an idea of the level of nail biting we are talking about here. I am not stressful - my mind is just programmed to put my finger in my mouth when I am not concentrating on anything else.

I have tried several methods. Gloves, bandages, and accounting rubber fingertips are embarrassing and uncomfortable. I tried another bad tasting nail polish - but that was just Cayenne Pepper - which I love! :)

I got this in the mail today and applied it. I tried to convince myself that it would be the most terrible taste in the world to keep the hype up for as long as possible to give me a head start to break the habit - as I didn't believe it would be as bad as it was described.

Let me tell you: I didn't need to build fake hype. This stuff is God-awfully disgusting. If I had to describe the taste to you, I would say it is a mixture of earwax, metal, and the aftertaste of licking a battery times 100. It lingers on your tongue for about 20 minutes after you come anywhere in contact with it and you have to gargle with mouthwash to get any immediate relief - it seems to get worse with just rinsing with water.

So, day 1: After messing up three times and putting my finger in my mouth subconsciously, I am absolutely terrified to put my finger anywhere near my mouth and have not bitten my nails once - something I don't think has ever happened in my life. Those three times that I had a mind-lapse, I stopped biting immediately and ran to the sink to try to rinse the taste out.

I will give the product a 5 star review because it is accurately described.

I will post another review later to let you know if in the end this worked - or if I just started getting used to the taste like every other method!

If this works and I am finally over this habit, I will be forever grateful :)

Customer Review: worked overnight
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a nurse and was wary of trying a product that contained chemicals, but nothing else had worked to date. I have a 4 year old and 6 year old who sucked their thumbs. I tried everything; bandaids over thumbs, thumb covers etc. The thumb covers were very pricey and you had to buy additional straps to keep the covers on if you needed more than what was sent initially. My girls would ask to get the covers cut off when they were eating and therefore we would go through 4 or 5 straps a day instead of one or two. Also they would occasionally suck their thumb with the cover on which would cause the cover to collect moisture inside and they both ended up with terrible blisters.
I decided to order the bitter nail polish as most of the ingredients looked like they were in nail products that I have used on them anyway. I also hoped that if the product worked they would not actually be sucking their thumb anymore and ingesting the product.
It worked overnight. My girls were old enough that I explained exactly what we were going to try. I told them the polish would taste bad and that was just to remind them not to suck their thumbs. If they didn't want to taste it then don't put their thumbs in their mouths. When it came we all tried it. It was pretty bad, we called it bitter, but the best way to describe it was it reminded me of licking envelopes. After reading other reviews I decided to only use a small amount on the thumbs. I covered just the top third of the nail. The bitter on my thumb stayed on with frequent hand washing for about three days. I let the girls keep water at their bedside for the first week or so because when they stuck their thumbs in they would want to run straight for a drink. They never put their thumbs in after that during the day and by the second night when I checked on them neither had a thumb in their mouths. I applied it for 5 weeks. At the end of 4 my 4 year old stuck her thumb in after a tantrum so I applied one more dose. Other than that I never saw their thumbs in their mouths again. Each week I put a little less on their thumbs and by the end I was just applying one strip on each thumb. When the kids ate with their fingers if it got on their food even a little their food would taste bitter.
I highly recommend this product and am planning to send my bottle around to friends as I only used probably 10% of the bottle on both kids.
My girls are both so proud that they stopped sucking their thumbs.

Customer Review: tastes bad, but not bad enough to deter my 4 year old...
Summary: 2 Stars

Our four-year-old son has sucked his thumb since day one. We are very concerned about this and have tried various methods to get him to stop.
After reading the many glowing reviews of this product on this and other websites, we decided to try it.

The first thing we noticed about the product we received was that it looked and smelled like acetone or nail polish remover. Alarmed, we contacted our dentist and pediatrician, both of whom advised us that the smell comes from solvents in the product which evaporate after application and should not pose a risk. With some trepidation, we decided to try the product anyway. The next things we noticed were that the product seemed to wear off rather quickly with our son and that he was willing to put up with the residual taste at prime thumb-sucking time (such as when he was tired).

Concerned about the frequency of application required, we then contacted the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research to see if they had any information about the product. The FDA informed us it has not evaluated the product for safety or efficacy and advised us to submit a MedWatch Report for possible follow-up investigation. The official who responded to our inquiry seemed concerned about the solvents and alcohol that form the main ingredients of this product.

Note that the FDA official did not indicate that the product was necessarily dangerous. However, the official did seem to think that further investigation was warranted. For the record, our son does not seem to have suffered any ill effects after 4 days of use.

My son was recently promoted to the "big kids" class at his pre-school, and we're very anxious about the physical and social effects of his thumb-sucking. We're as eager as anyone to find a magic bullet to fix this problem, but we have concluded that using alcohol and solvents of unknown efficacy and safety is too high a risk. Note too that because the product is made in Switzerland, holding its makers accountable for any adverse effects that might occur would be difficult. Before using this product, you may want to ask yourself whether you want your kids to be guinea pigs for the untested products of a foreign chemical company.
