Customer Reviews of Mavala Stop - Helps Cure Nail Biting and Thumb Sucking, 0.3-Fluid OunceCustomer Review: Thank Goodness For Mavala!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have a 7-year old boy who HAD been biting his fingernails constantly! I knew things were serious, when I caught him biting his TOENAILS because he really couldn't get a "good gnaw" going on his fingers anymore!! Talk about disgusting!! Unfortunately, his 3-year-old sister had followed in his footsteps and had begun to bite HER fingernails. That's when I ordered Mavala. I applied a heavy coat on both kids' fingernails the first night I received Mavala in the mail. Neither child minded very much, UNTIL they tried to bite their nails & discovered the HORRIBLE taste!! My boy actually cried when he realized that he would have to taste the Mavala every time he got his fingers near his mouth...including when he ate pizza, popcorn, chips, or any other snack food. Within a day, both kids were headed for a cure of their nail-biting. I assured them that if they grew their nails back out to regular length, I would stop applying the Mavala (which I had been applying about every other day). After 10 days, I removed the Mavala with fantastic results!! Both kids have quit putting their fingers anywhere near their mouths! I still have 2/3 of a bottle left, so they know I can repeat the treatment if they backslide!! Thanks, Mavala!!
Customer Review: LOVED IT!! Summary: 5 Stars
Worked instantly! My[...] old daughter had been sucking her fingers for over 2 years. Tried everything - sewing socks on her pjs at nite, dipping her fingers in vinegar, putting tape/bandaids on her fingers at nite, distracting her, helping her to develop new habits, taping gloves on her hands at nite, telling her that if she stopped sucking her fingers she could go to Disneyland. Nothing worked. All of it was a waste of time. Then I found Mavala. I prepared her for Mavala first. I told her that we were going to get some medicine for her fingers and that it was coming in the mail (exciting for her!) I warned her that if she put her fingers in her mouth that she was going to make a funny face because it will taste so bad. (made it kind of like a fun game so she wouldn't be upset with the taste) First nite I used it, it worked! She was so proud of herself! After that, she would ask for it every nite. After about 2 weeks, she stopped asking for it and the habit that I thought would never be broken was gone like a flash! I have since recommended it to several of our friends. One thing to keep in mind though - Don't use it on children under[...]...their taste buds aren't developed enough and it won't be as effective.
Customer Review: It works for nail biting and thumb sucking! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for 3 people in my family: DH 36 (nail biting), DS 6 y.o.(thumb sucking) and DS 3 y.o. (finger sucking).
DH has been biting his nails as long as he can remember; we've been married 10 years and I've NEVER seen him have to cut his nails! He used this ONE time. He said he didn't think it would work and didn't want to use it again because of the "girly" nail polish look ;) (NOTE: This is a clear NAIL POLISH and has a clear but very shiny gloss to it like regular nail polish.) HOWEVER, he has not bitten his fingernails since; it was enough to make him stop and think every time he goes to bite his nails. A lifetime habbit broken in a couple of days! He actually had to get his nails trimmed this week, and his nails and fingers look amazing.
This has also motivated DS 6 to stop his thumb sucking, and he pretty much stopped after a couple of weeks and only a few applications.
DS 3 has been a little harder, and we have found we do have to be more consistent with reapplying the polish with him; however, with the polish on, he does avoid sucking his fingers much better.
This is a LOT LESS EXPENSIVE than costly thumb sucking devices, so I would highly recommend trying this first.
Customer Review: Good for kids over 3. Not so good for 2 year olds. Summary: 4 Stars
Let me start by saying this product is wonderful for my 6 year old and my 3 year old. My 6 year old has sucked her thumb for years and nothing has stopped her from sucking her thumb until we tried this. She does not like the taste so it stops her from sucking her thumb even at night. I know that I need to reapply it when she starts sucking her thumb again. My 3 year old sucked his thumb and bit his nails until they bled. He stopped biting his nails and sucking his thumb if we applied it every other day like instructed. If I see him biting his nails, that usually means that I forgot to reapply it.
The reason that I only gave it 4 stars was because I tried it with my 2 year old twins who suck their fingers. As soon as I applied it and it dried, they put their fingers in their mouth. Once they tasted it they both started crying and vomited. It took us a long time to calm them down and they kept putting their fingers back in their mouth and it started all over again.
My advice is to wait until they are 3 and they can make the connection that when I put my fingers in my mouth it will taste bad, so I need to stop putting my fingers in my mouth. My 3 year old understood and it was wonderful for him.
Customer Review: Worked in 1 day for our 3.5 year old Summary: 5 Stars
Took one day,
(tried positive reinforcement/rewards for 6 months with no successs)
Prepped our child for its arrival. Let her know she is big now and that she had to stop and we had medicine to help her. Let her apply it to her nails since she is so big (never let her touch medicine so this was a big treat). On the 1st night we both tasted a very very very small amount. It is very bitter. She woke twice the 1st night after putting her thumb in her mouth. Applied it to the nails over the next 1 to 1.5 weeks but she never sucked her thumb after the 1st night.
other things we learned:
only apply it to the nail and wrap the bottle in a tissue. The smallest drop will work its way to your child's mouth.
If they do get it in their mouth. Make sure the cup or sippy they drink from to clean their mouth out is also cleaned or change after drinking. The cup will get the product on it, therby continuing the taste in their mouth.
Finally, toothpaste was the best to get the taste out.
The taste for our child was not horrible just annoyong and letting her apply it empowered her to be able to stop sucking her thumb by herself.
Good Luck.
