Customer Reviews of Mavala Stop - Helps Cure Nail Biting and Thumb Sucking, 0.3-Fluid OunceCustomer Review: This stuff works!!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This stuff is amazing...or nasty depending on how you look at it. I have been a habitual nail biter for about 33 years... yes that's right...33 years. I tried everything to stop from reading books, therapy, hypnosis, tapes, but nothing worked. I finally gave up and thought that I would be a nail biter for the rest of my life. I never thought about trying something like this because it seemed like a gimmick and was just too easy. I was wrong!! I bought a bottle with no expectations that it would work. I put it on and the first time I started biting ny nails I had to run to the bathroom to wash my mouth out. Even then the after taste remained in my mouth for 1/2 hour or so. This stuff is beyond gross tasting. I would find myself starting to bite my nails while I was doing something and BAM that taste would hit my mouth and I would immediately become aware of what I was doing and stop. There is just no way you can keep biting your nails with this stuff on them. You will have to stop because if you don't you will become physically ill. It's been a month since I bought it and for the most part I have stopped. I still find myself trying to nip at something here and there but as soon as I do, BAM, that awful taste kicks in and I stop. The only negative about the stuff is that if you love finger foods like fried chicken then you better be careful. No licking your fingers or you will be in trouble. But that is a small price to pay to kick a habit that is disgusting and embarassing.
Customer Review: Worked for my Thumb Sucker Summary: 5 Stars
We thought we had tried everything to help my five year old to stop sucking his thumb. He was getting really discouraged that he kept failing with everything he tried. It was a really hard habit for him to break. His teeth have gotten really bad and he has been getting horrible canker sores in his mouth. So finally we made an appointment to have an appliance placed in his mouth. The dentist couldn't get us in for four months so I scheduled the appointment but decided to check the internet one last time. We have tried other paint on products but he just sucked them off so I wasn't very hopeful, but this product got good reviews so I ordered it.
So far it has worked like a charm. It is really nasty so sucking it off hasn't been a problem. He has also tried washing it off but that doesn't work either. It hasn't been easy for him. Sometimes he is so proud of himself for going five days without sucking and then other times he gets really frustrated. Once when he had had a hard day at school and wanted to suck his thumb to relieve the stress he cried and exclaimed "The worst day of my life was the day that stuff came in the mail." It is a bit heartbreaking to watch him struggle, but I think in the long run it is for the best. I don't know how long it will take before he stops wishing he could suck his thumb, but I have to say this is a very effective product. It saved us $275.00 in dental fees. I would definately give this a try if a gentler approach doesn't work.
Customer Review: works but use with caution on young children Summary: 4 Stars
This product definitely has helped my three year old break the thumb sucking habit, but it should be used cautiously. The first time I put it on her thumbs, I painted the entire nail. She complained all day about the "yuckies" whenever her thumb accidently touched her lips (for example when she was eating her snack using her fingers). At bedtime, she stuck her thumb in her mouth and got a full taste which caused her to gag and throw up several times. (This is the simplified version of the story! You really don't want all the details of the hour long ordeal!) Of course, this product is not designed to come off easily (the instructions say to apply every TWO DAYS!) so I had to figure out how to get her through the night. I finally used nail polish remover to try to remove the product from her thumbs. I'm not sure if it worked, or if my daughter was just too traumatized to put her thumb in her mouth after that, but she didn't gag or throw up again. Now, I do still use the product but I only apply a very small amount to the tip of her thumb nail. As a side note, while preventing her from sucking her thumb, it also has effected her eating habits. Any time she eats anything with her fingers and gets a tast of the Mavala Stop product, she decides that she no longer likes that particular food! So, if you plan to use this on a young child, you might want to start out applying a minimal amount to the tip of the thumbnail, and be aware that the effects may be more far-reaching than you intend.
Customer Review: It worked overnight for my preschooler Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter has been sucking her index finger since she was in-utero. I had a 3-D ultrasound done when she was 4 months along, and it showed her sucking her finger. Because it was so important to her, we just let her go and didn't force her to stop...until just a few weeks ago, before she turned 4. We figured it was time to intervene. Her teeth were already malshaped, and we just could not let it go any longer. So, my husband ordered this product after much research. Just like what other reviewers said, it worked OVERNIGHT! After getting a good taste of this stuff, my daughter pretty much stopped sucking her finger. It took her about a week of tossing and turning at night. It broke my heart to see her having withdrawls, but we knew she was just going through this weening process. She is now completely freed of finger sucking. This is the best product and it truly works. Just start out with a tiny bit on the nail. Don't use too much. In hindsight, I wished I stopped this habit when she was around two and a half. Her dentist said it was okay to let it go until age 4, but now that I've gone through this, I would encourage fellow parents to stop their children with finger sucking MUCH sooner. It really alters your teeth and face. It also misshapes your finger. I regret that I let her go too long. We thought it was helping her to sooth herself, and it did, but after a certain point, it just becomes a nasty habit. Just teach them how to comfort themselves in other ways.
Customer Review: Taste terrible, Works Great with a little reward system added, too! Summary: 5 Stars
Tried Thum stuff and my daughter just licked it off.
This Mavala stop tastes very bitter and pretty awful and has some stayng power. However, I did find that I had to reapply every night before bed, not every other as directed.
I also bought a book called "Thumbuddy to Love - Ballerina Sue" here on Amazon as well ( there is a boy version too - Fireman Fred, I think). It comes with a little story about a little ballerina conquering thumb sucking, a little ballerina doll ( I think it is meant to go on your finger somehow, but my daughter just cuddled it) AND the important thing is a little book of star reward stickers. My five year old took great pride each night in putting her sticker on the little enclosed chart when she got through the day successfully. When she ahd a fully successful day ( no thumb sucking at all) she got a star sticker. In the first week, she had a day or two that she would say she forgot and put here finger in her mouth, but the Mavala reminded her to stop...so I would draw in a star for good effort and honesty.
The chart has 21 or 28 days and she had stopped by 3 weeks and we went through the chart 2 times ( double stars on each block) just to be sure there was no bcaksliding.
This productThumbuddy to Love: Ballerina Sue works, but try a little reward reinforcement as well!
Good Luck.
