Customer Reviews of Mavala Stop - Helps Cure Nail Biting and Thumb Sucking, 0.3-Fluid Ounce

Customer Review: Seems to work provided you use enough.
Summary: 4 Stars

Seems to working, but only if you coat often enough and a large enough area to cause gagging (may be some vomit too). Using a small amount (nail only) with a 5 year old only had a minor affect and was sucked off fairly easily without much effect (other than some minor cough/saying throat was a little sore). The 5 year old continued thumb sucking for four days while using this product on just the nail. However, applying a larger glob to cover some skin area too had a more dramatic effect when the thumb was sucked; There was coughing for about 5 minutes, some gagging, minor throw up, but now thumb sucking is finally beginning to stop with just that one heavier application. For a 3 year old, coating only the nail was plenty to cause gagging and some minor throw up, and the child hasn't sucked thumb since. The direction call for coating nail every other day, but it may require coating once or twice a day depending on how much they have sucked. For those worried about night time unconscious sucking, place a sock over hand or some type of thumb-guard to prevent thumb sucking while sleeping to prevent gagging at night.

In summary, my opinion is to start with just a thin coat on the nail or part of the nail every other day per instructions, but be ready to move to coating everyday and/or thicker and larger area if you find your child continues to thumb suck. Be ready for gagging and some throw up if your child throws up easily.

Customer Review: Perfection!

My husband and I purchased this product based on the reviews that we read. We have a 6 year old son who has sucked his thumb from day 1 of life. We figured 6 was past time to stop sucking his thumb and tried various ways of having him stop. But, as you know if you used to be a thumb sucker (and I was,) it's a habit that is hard to break - especially when you pop that thumb in your mouth while you're asleep.

After one night of using this product I would say that my son stopped even subconciously sucking his thumb. The first night was painful - I'm not going to lie - every time he tried to suck his thumb (rather if awake or asleep) he was in our room waking us up and wanting to get the taste out of his mouth. Ever since that one night we weren't awakened anymore and I would say that after one week of using it he doesn't want to, or try to, suck his thumb at all. Last night we didn't put the product on his thumb and checked on him often. No thumb in his mouth that we saw. We would even let him put the product on his thumb to encourage active participation in this endeavor - he was very proud to use it and I think is happy that he's not doing this anymore.

My recommendation would be to use this in the summer while school is out based on the length of time it may take your child to stop sucking their thumb. Better to have a restless night sleep during the summer than on a school night. Thanks and good luck!

Customer Review: Finally! Something that works!

I had an 11 year old thumb sucker. She would often do it in her sleep at night, completely unaware that she was even doing it. We'd tried all the tricks. Mittens, THUM nail paint, bandages, lectures from the dentist, a visit to the orthodontist for a lecture, rewards, consequenses, I even crocheted her a thumb cover to wear. Nothing worked. She just did not want to give up her habit badly enough. I came to amazon.com and searched for thumb sucking remedies and saw the terrific reviews for Mavala Stop, saw the reasonable price, and thought what the heck... Our son also bites his knuckles and constantly has his hands near his mouth - not a good thing when flu season is upon us. I painted the stuff on my daughter's thumbnails and also on my son's fingernails. That night they both made the mistake of putting their fingers in their mouth. My son came down from his room complaining about feeling sick. My daughter said she almost ran to the bathroom to throw up. What a wakeup! Neither of them has had their hands in their mouths in over 3 weeks. I've barely even used the contents in the bottles. There should be enough in there to share with someone else once we're certain that we're finished with it for good. Our kids have learned to eat finger foods carefully so that their nails don't touch their food or their mouths. This stuff has worked wonders and I would highly recommend it to anyone else who might be dealing with finger-to-mouth habits.

Customer Review: Worked when nothing else did

I had tried everything to get me 11 yr old (YES !!! he was still sucking his thumb at the age of 11) to stop sucking his thumb. He kept telling me he had stopped, but sometimes when we were driving or watching TV on the couch, I would see him with his thumb in his mouth. I had tried Thum, tape, gloves, punishments, rewards, you name it, I had tried it. I was concerned about his teeth obviously, but I was also concerned that he was just picking up germs and putting them directly into his mouth.

I heard about this product on the internet and decided to give it a go. After all, we had tried everything else. I ordered it on Tues Dec 7 with regular shipping and it arrived Thurs Dec 9. Fabulous!! We both put some on all of our nails. In addition to the thumb sucking, my son had started chewing his nails and fingers. I'm guessing as a subsitute for the thumb sucking when he was at school. I told him I would do it too so we would be in this together. Well, by the next day, he had stopped. Not just the thumb sucking, but the finger chewing as well. We're going to visit family for the Christmas holiday. This will be a pleasant surprise for Granny and Poppy.

The only downside is that since I put the stuff on my fingers too I have to prepare our meals using gloves. Compared to the prospect of potentially having a teenager who still sneaks and sucks his thumb, I can deal with the gloves for a few days.

Customer Review: Frustrating but highly effective

*Note* Being vegetarian, I had to email the company to make sure that it is a vegetarian formula, given all the flavor reviews made me doubt it, but it is safe for vegetarians.

I bought this for my 7yo daughter who's been sucking her thumb since being days old. Of course, this is our last resort, as we've tried MANY other remedies to no avail. The first day I applied the product, she complained and cried that it was no fair and that it stained her mouth. She would try orange juice, water, milk, and other foods to get the taste out. I felt bad, but that was the point of the product! At night, to pass time until she fell asleep, she figured out she could watch the clock to get her mind off of not being able to suck her thumb. I had to realize that she had been doing this for so long, she didn't realize she was doing it, hence why this was the best product to get her attention.

Her only other complaint was when she would eat finger foods. We went to a tea room with little sandwiches and other finger foods, and just barely touching her bottom lip with her thumbnail threw her off. Fortunately, she does not have an easy gag reflex, so we never had to deal with vomit like others on here. Although, when I asked her what it tasted like, she said it was a mix of bitter, peppers, and dog poop. So, there you go!
