Customer Reviews of Medline 31" ReacherCustomer Review: Not Impressed Summary: 2 Stars
I received this reacher as a gift when I broke my ankle and could not reach things very well. I find it very awkward to use and it feels clumsy. The very tip of the pick up part does not meet when you close the jaws, making it impossible to pick up very small items. It does not have a locking feature which is helpful sometimes. I purchased a "Pik Stik" which I find to be far superior. It has a gun type grip and it has the locking feature. It is strong with an aluminum shaft and the jaws grip well including the tips which close and allow small items to be picked up. It also comes in several lengths to suit your particular needs. The jaws can be rotated and locked increasing it's usefulness. The Pic Stik is also less expensive. I do NOT recommend the Medline reacher. Go for the Pic Stik and you'll be much happier with your choice.
Customer Review: Almost the best in class Summary: 3 Stars
I decided it was time to invest in reachers for the rooms in my home that I use most, so I oredered three more from [...]: the Invacare Multi-Pik Reacher, the PikStik Pro Aluminum Reacher, and the Medline 31" Reacher. I put them all through several tests of common uses I have for reachers: pulling books down from shelves, picking up bits of paper and coins, and unloading the dishwasher. The results? I found the Invacare to be the most useful for me by far. The Medline seems to require more muscle power to grasp things, so it comes in a close second. The PikStik feels flimsy and I had a hard time grasping things. It has been consigned to the pantry where things are organized so that I do a minimum of reaching.
Customer Review: Very good Summary: 4 Stars
Five years ago, I got a "Golden Retriever" reacher from Walgreens and loved it! I am paralyzed and in a wheelchair and a reacher is one of my best friends. However, the last year, I have been buying the Medline reacher, also from Walgreens. The tips, rubber grippers, and plastic are inferior to the "Golden." However, I have tried other brands since the lower quality, and nothing seems to be as good a value. Although it is guaranteed for a year, it is more trouble and expense to return than just buying another one. I will probably buy another Medline soon. Wish it was square barrel so it wouldn't roll off my lap.
Customer Review: Grabbers Are Great! Summary: 4 Stars
We wouldn't want to live without this product. We've used this model for years, and we have these grabbers all over the house. They save our backs, but they're also handy for picking up things that fall into spaces too small for hand retrieval. We're especially thankful for our grabbers when there's something that we don't want to touch. These grabbers are sturdy and reasonably durable. After years of using six different grabbers, we have broken one internal handle and lost two, rubber-like pincer covers. These damaged grabbers are still in use; they just don't work as well as they did.
Customer Review: Strong, well-made reacher/gripper Summary: 5 Stars
This item has been in my house for just over a week, but I find it very useful and extremely well-made. It has metal and heavy plastic parts, and a very solid-feeling grip. The jaws open far enough and closely tightly enough to easily lift cans down from high cupboards and pick up fairly small items from the floor. So far, so good. I highly recommend it.
Update, several months later: This is a great gadget to use while playing with my Schnauzers. They seem to think it is a living thing, and react to its snappy "jaws" with a combination of wariness and playfulness. Great fun.
