I don't believe in herbal "cures." I take vitamins, but for everything else, it's straight to the doctor. So when my friend recommended these, "skeptical" was an understatement for how I felt. Oh, I'd indulged in your occasional chamomile teas. Even tried putting drops of valerian under my tongue, but when I'd reached my third or fourth day of sleeplessness and the inability to concentrate and the shakes would start to manifest themselves more noticeably, I've always had to rely on prescriptions to put me back in a regular sleep cycle.
However, this last bout hit me at a really critical time. A job I'd accepted, despite misgivings, had stressed me to the point where I could not get my mind to "shut off" for sleep and the first day of work was just two days away. My best friend's mother had used these successfully, so she recommended them as a last resort before I'd have to break down and pay for a clinic appointment. I took one while leaving the drug store where we bought them from. 15-20 minutes later, I began to feel relaxed. Three hours later, I woke up from the couch where I had dozed off and dragged myself to bed. There I slept (finally) for seven more hours. The next day, I slept and slept and slept...without having to take anymore pills. It was almost as if these jump started my body into sleeping again. After a day to recuperate, everything was back to normal for me. I haven't had to take one since, but I keep them in my medicine cabinet just in case. And at just a few pennies per pill, it sure beat what I was getting from the doctor's office: a week's supply of prescription meds that put me back 60 dollars...and that was with insurance. And unlike OTC sleep aids, the melatonin didn't affect my breathing, give me cotton mouth, or leave me groggy in the morning.
I don't know if this works for everyone. And as with any product OTC, herbal, prescription...there is a chance of adverse side-effects. I'm not here to convince anyone that they need these. Just wanted to share my own experience and to say that it did worked for me.
