Customer Review: Great razor...Easy to use
Summary: 5 Stars

I just recently started getting in "luxury" shaving. I bought the badger brush, good shaving creams, etc. I wanted to make the jump to a saftey razor but was a little hesitant. It seemed intimidating by other peoples reviews. I went ahead and purchased the razor anyway and a 100 pack of derby blades.

I couldn't have been happier with the razor/results. I'm not sure why people said it will take you a month+ to get comfortable with the razor. It took me 3 shaves before I was to the point where I was happy with how crazy close it got. I like to make 2 passes over the entire face.

I've read where people said to hold the razor at a 30 degree angle. It's really not that complicated. Just hold it until it starts to cut the hair on your face easily. When it does, that is the position it should be held at. Just visualize how the cheap name brand razors are angled. It's not rocket science.

I've cut myself once and it was my earlobe. When I did a pass on my face I picked the razor off and it nicked my ear. I haven't even cut the area that is intended for shaving. I haven't run into razor burn/bumps with this either. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. That was the worst part of double/triple bladed razors. I also keep the blade setting at 1. It seems to get hella close for 1 so I have no desire to bump it up yet.

Anyway, if you're debating on whether or not to get this razor because you think it may be difficult to use, I say get it. I personally didn't think there was any learning curve.

Now if I could just find a nice stand for the razor/badger brush. The art of shaving has some sweet ones but for a $100 they're F N crazy.

Customer Review: Excellent Shave-Adjustments a big plus!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one sweetheart of a shaver. Extra weight (heft) and adjustments made it easier to control. I have been shaving for over 50 years and, in that time have used Gillette double edge razors, Schick injectors and the multi-blade Gillette cartridge razors. I stopped at the 3 blade version (they were starting to look like paddles). All of these products gave an acceptable shave and they all had their quirks. I guess I migrated to the cartridge razors because they were easy and available and I was having difficulty finding blades for the double edge and injector razors. When my wife told me the cartridge economy packs were over $40.00, I decided to investigate further. i began with a Parker razor which is a well-made product but was too aggressive for my aging skin. That's when I took the the plunge and purchased the Merkur Futur razor.
My first shave with the Futur was a delight. I set the adjustment to "1" and had a great shave. I am planning to go slow with the adjustments until I am more proficient with the razor. Having that degree of control is a real bonus for me. I remember the early Gillette adjustable and I could never tell the difference between the various settings-none of them were particularly aggressive. The Futur feels and looks well made and I can tell the difference with the settings. The razor shipped with One Merkur blade (they should have done a little better with such an expensive razor) and that also feels like a quality product.
All in all, this is a great product and I think it to be a wise choice for anyone with aging skin or skin issues.

Customer Review: Bulky, Slippery, Hard to Adjust & Clean, Agressive Shave
Summary: 2 Stars

In my opinion this razor was designed for marketing appeal and not functionality.

BULKY - shaving under nose is a problem.

SLIPPERY - Need to rinse hands and razor several times during a shave in order to maintain control. All surfaces are polished smooth.

ADJUST Razor Setting - If you don't grasp the head firmly when rotating the adjusting handle, head can rotate easily within your grasp. This resulted in a deep gash on my thumb. Adjusting razor during use is dangerous unless head is wrapped in a wash cloth.

CLEANING - rinsing head under hot water doesn't do it; after a few shaves crud builds up. Definitely not hygienic. Razor must be disassembled and scrubbed clean after each shave. Lots of crevices and 'holes' to collect dead skin and beard.

At all settings the angle of approach is quite aggressive. The use of a blade such as Feather will predispose to nicking at any setting if great care is not taken with the shaving technique.

The head of the razor snaps on and off. Two posts on the head are captured by parallel spring wires. The head is difficult to remove. The position of the head to the razor blade mounting base is not mechanically locked but relies on parallel wire spring tension which will vary over time.

I would give this razor a one star rating but it does meet one objective. It does shave; in my case poorly with regard to irritation and occasional nicks.

Customer Review: Simply Amazing!
Summary: 5 Stars

While I did not purchase from Amazon, I did the research here and decided to write yet another review.

I am 24, and have been shaving since I was 14. Like many I have used the full array of Gillette shavers from the Sensor to the ridiculous Fusion (I kept getting them sent to me free in the mail). Even tried the Quattro, once (absolute junk). I don't know how my facial hair compares in thickness to other guys (nor is that something I really want to learn).

With the Futur (and Merkur blades) there is no pulling of hair, no clogging, nothing. It is a welcomed change as I would spend most of my time rinsing the disposables or tapping on the counter with most of the blades still clogged up. I don't even need to keep the water running to force hair out, I used the other reviewers tip and use a large coffee cup.

I have not updated my shaving products yet. I use "the king of shaves" line and it seems to work good so far. I bought in bulk and I plan to use it up before I make a full leap.

Another great tip I picked up was to put a small mirror in the shower to shave. With the weather getting colder I tend to stay in the shower and warm up. This way I can at least be a little productive as I reach 10-15 minute showers.

Thanks "Matt M." for providing an excellent review and causing me to make the jump.

Buy this, you won't be disappointed!

Customer Review: Great razor. Form + Function = Worth the Price.
Summary: 5 Stars

I wish I had bought this razor years ago. I've never been an electric razor person, and in the past have mostly used low-cost Gillette Sensors. There's nothing bad about low cost disposables, and I intend to keep my Gillette Sensor for my travel bag. Here are a few notes after using my Merkur Solingen for a couple of weeks:

Who will like it.....
1) Those who appreciate beautifully constructed tools / instruments. The Merkur is clearly made to "last a lifetime". It is an excellent example of form properly combined with function.

2) Those who appreciate an ultra-close shave. I doubt better is possible.

3) Those who want a warmed face while shaving. An unanticipated side benefit of the heavy stainless steel is its ability to hold heat. Run the razor under warm or hot tap water, and experience an excellent, massage-like effect when you shave.

4) Those who want to transform shaving into something other than a boring daily necessity.

5) Those who enjoy the lower price (and standard, non-proprietary format) of double-edge, high-performance safety razor blades.

If you've never used a safety razor, it might take a couple of shaving sessions to develop a comfortable technique. Other than that, and the non-trivial cost of the razor, there are no negatives.
