Customer Reviews of Merkur Model 38 Hd Classic "Barber Pole" Long Safety Razor

Customer Review: Great razor, reasonable price
Summary: 5 Stars

After trying the Weishi toy razor, I traded up to the Merkur 38C. What a difference! The Weishi had been recommended for novice DE shavers, so it seemed like the safe choice. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that it is ill-equipped to handle coarse, thick beards. After a couple of days with the Weishi, I threw it into the drawer and there it has stayed.

The Merkur 38C was highly recommended by Giovanni at Barberia Italiana and it has proven to be a wonderful piece of gear. The German razor appears well made and well finished, so the price seems quite reasonable. The size and shape of the handle and head make shaving easy (at least in my large hands) and the weight is perfect. Despite my novice DE shaving status, I have no problem with very close, comfortable shaves with very rare bloodshed.

I have tried an extensive blade sampler from Barberia Italiana and have found the Personna blades from Israel to be ideal for me. Strangely, I actually enjoy and look forward to shaving with the Merkur.

Hope this is helpful.

Customer Review: Old Style Shaving
Summary: 5 Stars

I was hesitant upon buying this razor because I thought I was going to cut my own throat with it! To my pleasure, I shaved with it for the first time and, WOW, it shaves as good if not better than the 2 and 5 bladed razors out there and for half the extended price! Not only was the first shave easier but it was enjoyable, almost as if I was back in the day, cheasy, yes, but true. If you want a shave that is smooth, enjoyable, and easy, I would recommend this razor to anyone. I prefer the 38c hd as I am a man with large hands and like the weight of a solid razor, not plastic. don't be swayed by people who would have you believe that if you spend a few more bucks you can get a "Futur," got news, same company and same style of shaving! The question here is do you want a "barber pole" "old style" razor or a new smooth "futuristic" looking old style safety razor? Definitley worth the expenditure either way, saves money in the long run, less garbage, and in fact recyclable! Win, win for everyone.

Customer Review: Fantastic Shaving Experience
Summary: 5 Stars

I've recently begun moving from the marketing driven shaving devices I've used for the past 20+ years (Fusion, etc) to a more traditional shaving experience. I purchased the Merkur 38HD to complement my use of a straight razor, and all I can say is "Wow". The shaving experience is far superior to anything else I've ever used.

Just like many of the reviewers on this board, I did my research on multiple websites and paid close attention to their directions for using this double edge razor. I was highly sceptical that the weight of the razor alone would be sufficent...but I could not have been more wrong. My shave is now on par with anything I've ever done, and the long term investment pays for itself in a remarkably short time.

The razor itself is solid. Like any good piece of hardware the Merkur has good construction, heft, and quality materials. You know that this is an item that you will be able to use for many years to come. The replacement of blades is simple and straightforward.

Customer Review: Solid and Basic!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am really impressed with this razor. I hadn't shaved with a double edge since about 1989. Since then I've used "systems," and disposables. I like the Merkur 38c because it is a well made product, and it is simple. At first I thought I needed an adjustable razor, like the one I had before, but that is something else to break. The Merkur is simple, and I like that. I researched double edged razors for a few days and decided on the Merkur 38c. It seemed like the best value, and I like the styling.

Prep. is important, and it took some getting use to again, but it works great. I like the fact that there is a multitude of double edge blades to choose from and not just a cartridge.

My old double edge had the butterfly top. The Merkur has the top come off, and it is all metal construction. I doubt I will need to by another razor. I'll spend money on different preps etc.

All metal, and chrome plated; the Merkur 38c "works," for me.

Customer Review: throw your mach 3 away..... no really
Summary: 5 Stars

im 16 and have used a mach 3 since it came out, and then the mach 3 turbo, with a few differt gels and aways had razor burn on neck from it. but with this its scary how close you can get, and maybe if you read this i can save you some learning curve. DONT PUSH DOWN, let the blade do the work, un learn your bad habits, and you will LOVE THIS BLADE, i had 2 mach 3's i sold to a friend with blades for a few bucks. you might want to try Meckur and dansin blades but there are alot of types to try and find what works best on your face, also dont skimp on the lather, its cheap and worth the good stuff, also badger brush is a must, i got a cheap one at first and the hairs fall out.... you get what you pay for.

Your grandpa was on to something with these.... dont buy in the corprate hype, i have yet to get that painful "pulling feeling" anymore from letting it grow too long.

all in all its WELL worth a try!
