Customer Reviews of Merkur Model 38 Hd Classic "Barber Pole" Long Safety Razor

Customer Review: Fantastic DE Razor
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been wet shaving for quite some time now and while I don't consider myself the definitive expert I have tried quite a few of the tools that are available after you lather up. I have been on both ends of the spectrum from the gillette 56,000 blade system which is rediculously expensive for replacement blades and only gives a mediocre shave to the classic strait razor which was just a little too time consuming and nick prone for my liking. I am a traditionalist by nature and so have tried a number of the double edged razors like dad used to use.
The merkur is the best by far.

I like the heft of the HD and the long handle is great for a guy with big hands.
The blades are easily exchanged and once the mechanism is tightened down it does not come loose like some others I have used.
Overall fit and finish was excellent and it gives the closest shave so far.

Customer Review: Very Well Made - Handles Well
Summary: 5 Stars

I got fed up with 4 blade razors that are a product of marketing and not practical science. Double edge safety razors are more effective. This razor has the weight and size of the more expensive Merkur razors. The weight of the razor drives the shave - you don't have to bear down on the razor - it glides over your beard. Safety razors are more "green" - no plastic blades to throw out. The steel blades are biodegradable. Event better - get a badger hair brush and shaving soap. No cans to throw away. And the brushing action is good for your skin. Finally - double edge razor blades are way cheaper than the "modern" blades. If you want something a little smaller - get the Merkur Heavy Duty (shorter handle - slightly lighter). I don't like the other Merkur classic razors; they are too light and come apart in three pieces to change the blade. This one and the HD are two piece.

Customer Review: Very well made
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my first ever DE razor, so I can't compare it to anything, but the look and feel of it is really great! A real work of art. However, like everyone says, there's a learning curve with these things. My first attempt left me cut up and with a very rough shave, but I did notice one or two small sections on my face that were a lot smoother than usual, so I kept practicing. Now after five attempts I'm starting to get the hang of it and it really works great!

edit:
Okay, a few weeks later after much more practice, this thing definitely shaves much closer than my mach 3. With that thing I'd be feeling growth just 6 hours later, but with this I'm still smooth shaven when I go to bed. However, it is much harder to use. My face now comes out well every time, but mastering my jaw and neck has been a losing battle, so I'm switching back to my mach 3 for those areas.

Customer Review: Great Razor
Summary: 5 Stars

Love this razor. I have an older Merkur "short handle" razor that I've used for years and when I saw the longer "Barber Pole" handle deceided to replace it. The longer handle makes it easier to hold and get a great shave. Easy to clean, the blade never clogs. A well built, solid razor that will last for many years.
I'd also recommend the Wilkinson Sword razor blades. Haven't been able to buy them in the states for years over the counter but Amazon has them. My father got me using those when I was in my twenties and we were both disappointed when we couldn't get them locally anymore. I ordered 50 of them when I ordered the razor and gave some to Dad. He was real happy. They only have the "Classic" but if you can find the "Premium" they are even better. When combined with the Merkur razor, there is no better shave.

Customer Review: Fantastic and weighty
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this safety razor. It's nice and heavy, cleans easy and shaves great. I bought a Parker piece of junk before this and boy was that a mistake. Accept no substitutes. The only fault I can give this razor is that when it's wet, the grip isn't all that great to hold on to; but it's a small complaint for an otherwise great razor. It unscrews to 2 pieces and is super easy to change blades. A couple of tips to keep it tip top: when you're done shaving, unscrew it a little and rinse it, that will make sure to get all the stubble out of the head. Another great tip (thank you [...]) is to keep the head submerged in mineral oil (which can be found at target or other stores I would guess) which will keep the water out of it and make the blades last significantly longer and prevent any possibility of rusting. (not that it ever will)
