Being a long-time sinus sufferer, I found the benefits of guiafenesin years before it became "MUCINEX". Without it, my sinuses get plugged and irritated within a few days, setting me up for recurrent infections. It works as an "expectorant" which means it helps keep the mucus thinned so your sinuses can clear more easily and don't become a breeding ground for bacteria and /or viruses.
As a clinic-based, practicing RN, I know that Mucinex / guiafenesin is often recommended by physicians, and is a safe product with very few side effects or drug interactions. (NO, I'm not getting paid by anyone to say any of this!)
Mucinex in this Extended Release formula minimizes the number of daily doses down to once or twice daily depending on your personal needs. This 100 tablet bottle is definitely the cheapest way to purchase - I had been getting it at WalMart for the past few years (until my smart sister told me to check for it on Amazon :-) in the 40 tablet bottles for almost $20 per bottle!
If you have sinus problems, especially chronic ones, or are prone to recurring infections, Mucinex is certainly worth a try.

Description of Mucinex 100 Immediate Extended Release Tablets (600mg)

Relieves Chest Congestion Thins and loosens Mucus 100 Bi-Layer Tablets Indications: Helps loosen phlegm (mucus(and thin bronchial secretions to rid the bronchial passageways of bothersome mucus and make coughs more productive. Directions: Do not crush, chew, or break tablet. Take with a full glass of water. This product can be administered without regard for the timing of meals. Adults and children 12 years of age and over: One or two tablets every 12 hours. Do not exceed 4 tablets in 24 hours. Children under 12 years of age: Do not use. Store between 20-25?C (68-77?F). See bottom of bottle for lot code and expiration date. Ingredients: Active Ingredients: in each extended-release tablet: Guaifenesin (600 mg) (Expectorant) Inactive Ingredients: Carbomer 934P NF, FD&C Blue 1, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose USP, Magnesium Stearate NF, Microcrystalline Cellulose NF, Sodium Starch Glycolate NF Warnings: Do not use for children under 12 years of age. Ask a doctor before use if you have persistent or chronic cough such as occurs with smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema. cough accompanied by too much phlegm (mucus). Stop use and ask a doctor if cough lasts more than 7 days, comes back, or occurs with fever, rash, or persistent headache. These could be signs of a serious illness. If pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a health professional before use. Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away. Tamper evident: do not use if neckband is broken.
