Customer Reviews of NOW Foods Peppermint Oil, 1 ouncesCustomer Review: Bought this to chase away the mice Summary: 5 Stars
Last winter (after my last cat died) I found mice were visiting several drawers and cupboards in my kitchen (leaving their droppings behind as evidence); preliminary and uncomfortable efforts to trap them were only modestly helpful. After some searching I found people suggesting peppermint oil to deter mice. Feeling dubious but since it was a small investment I tried the peppermint oil and, voila! It really really works. They may still be there behind the walls of course, but they no longer visit my cupboards & drawers. A little dab on a cotton pad every few days in their favorite spots has completely eliminated their visits. Some reviewers complained about the smell but I found it mild and not unpleasant. Certainly preferable to the hygiene concerns of the droppings. The little 4oz bottle is still 3/4 full after four months so it ends up being inexpensive. I'm still working on finding a more permanent (humane) solution but meanwhile this is a wonderful find (second only to getting cats again - I'm told the cats don't actually have to catch them - the mice recognize their scent and stay away).
Customer Review: Mice not dissuaded.... Summary: 1 Stars
I have had mice problems since I moved in to my apartment building in the Bronx. New York is notorious for its rodent problems--they really are everywhere. Many times the rustling in the bushes in the park is due to rats or mice.
Anyhow, I've been catching mice consistently in my apartment. After laying down a sticky mouse traps with a corn chip on it, I can catch a mouse within two days. As there is this constant flow of mice, and I needed to do something so that they don't want to enter my apt. (If I knew how they entered, this would be the simplest solution, but I cannot figure this out.)
So I purchased this peppermint oil, placed soaked cotton pads all around my kitchen (including on top of the refrigerator, the mice's favorite spot) and on the edges of the living room, all of which made my one bedroom apartment nauseously pepperminty. The next morning I awoke and found mouse droppings on top of the refrigerator!!!! So, I suppose my hard core city mice were not dissuaded. I'm going to order an ultrasonic rodent repeller next, and see what happens....
Customer Review: works in conjunction with traps Summary: 4 Stars
Like anything else this product will not deter all the mice, but does help keep them away from certain areas of the house. I know that the buggers are definitely in my walls, and more than likely in my attic and basement, but the peppermint does aid in keeping at least most of them from coming into other rooms in the house.
You do have to renew the oil on the cotton balls at least once every week to couple of weeks since it loses its punch. Also, you have to be someone who enjoys living in a candycane factory! hahaaaa...But a strong scent of peppermint is a small price to pay for not having those nasty things running over everything in your house on a regular basis.
This oil in conjunction with Have A Heart traps and glue traps have helped us keep many of the mice away. Also making sure that all food is promptly put away, vacuumed or wiped up helps alot too. The mice can smell it a mile off. So tuck those cottonballs with oil on it in corners and under furniture etc. and keep renewing it. Hopefully it will help you too!
Customer Review: Yum! Summary: 5 Stars
This oil smells great, tastes great. I've used it in cooking, beverages, home-made candles, home-made laundry soap and hand soap, table-top fountains, bath salts (just let some oil soak into epsom salts), diffuser, and a few drops in shoes that could use the boost in the right odor-direction. It's worked out great for everything. I haven't actually tried burning the (gel) candles, yet, we are still enjoying them for their appearance and scent. I was a little nervous buying this on-line, but it turned out to be a nice purchase. The lid does not have a dropper, so be aware that you will need your own if you plan to dispense the oil that way.
Customer Review: :0( Didn't work for me either Summary: 1 Stars
I am with the others who it didn't work for. 100% peppermint oil and I actually saw a large flux of activity. We have been infested in our apartment and cannot figure out where the heck they are coming from. They eat holes all in the carpet to get in and out. Lined the areas with wire mesh, maintenence filled holes in kitchen and still coming in. Used this and have seen/caught way more mice than before the application. Someone said they wondered if the mice saw it as a scent of food and I wonder that myself. I am so frustrated, I don't know what to do. These things are making me a absolute wreck.
