Customer Reviews of Nature's Way Licorice Root -- 100 CapsulesCustomer Review: THE BEST LICORICE & GOOD FOR MANY THINGS BESIDES PEPTIC ULCERS Summary: 5 Stars
VERY EFFECTIVE TONIC AGAINST STOMACH VIRUSES AND FLU LIKE ALIMENTS
A WORD OF CAUTION - CONSIDER DGL FORM [WITHOUT Glycyrrhizin]:
If you are looking solely for relief from peptic ulcer symptoms and/or G.E.R.D., use DGL Licorice only as it is safer and concentrates the factors that alleviate gastric symptoms. Also in wafer form it is more effective as it combines with saliva to react positively in the gastric tract. [DGL Wafers]
ABOUT LICORICE ROOT: [like these capsules]
If you research the medical literature regarding Licorice one finds both incredibly numerous and effective applications and the threat of potentially dangerous side-effects for some people. In my case I benefit from the effective applications but am at high risk for the side-effects [hypertension - fluid/electrolyte imbalances]. That is one reason for having a stated maximum content of 6.5% glycyrrhizin, as that is the agent most likely to affect fluid balances and the most potent factor in licorice root.
ABOUT BRANDS:
I have used 3 brands of licorice over the past several years on a daily basis. Though I prefer the crude herb in certified organic form to be added to almost everything "Nature's Way" for all practical purposes is standardized to be less than 6.5% glycyrrhizin, which is important in calculating the impact of the licorice on my fluid balance. "Now" and "Swanson" are brands I have also used with good results, but they don't guarantee the 6.5% glycyrrhizin content.
MY EXPERIENCE WITH LICORICE:
I have taken licorice daily since 2003, as an aid to digestion and for relieving stomach cramps. It is also useful as an immune booster or as an adjunct to any herbal combination used against cold, flu, or digestive system complaints. In Chinese medicine it is considered a "minister herb", which are seen to make other herbal medicines more available to the body. The other minister is ginger, which gives me indigestion if I take too much of it or too often. Licorice generates moisture and tonifies and invigorates ch'i [the life force] according to Chinese medicine.
Also, added to any tea it is very effective against dry coughs and aids in making them productive while settling the stomach. Its taste is complementary and almost invisible as long as you don't add more than 2 capsules per full cup of tea. Overall, Nature's Way Licorice Root is an outstanding product, effective against coughs, stomach complaints, viruses, flu like ailments, and much more. A very good value for a very useful herb.
LICORICE AGAINST CHRONIC FATIGUE:
Less widely known but equally important, Licorice is an awesome tonic against fatigue, especially for people with narcoleptic symptoms or that may be suffering from Addison's disease. Herbs like Panax Ginseng are not as effective in these cases as Licorice and Panax Ginseng is very difficult to find at affordable prices in an effective dose. DGL will not work against chronic fatigue because it is the glycyrrhizin that is thought to be the chief contributing agent.
BLOOD PRESSURE & OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
I had been warned that it might raise my blood pressure and produce a potassium deficiency if it was taken for more than a week. I MONITOR BLOOD PRESSURE 4-6x daily and have not noticed any increase taking 6-8 capsules per day. Including the crude herb, I probably ingest 15-20 grams of licorice daily without any effect on my blood-pressure or any apparent edema. Again, it is the all important glycyrrhizin that is the offending party here, which is why DGL does not aggravate hypertension and edema.
