Customer Reviews of NatureBright PER3 Deluxe Light Therapy LampCustomer Review: Not a Dawn Simulator or Light Therapy Device Summary: 1 Stars
I am an academic psychiatrist, and have reviewed the scientific articles on Dawn Simulation and Light Therapy, both of which are promising treatments for Seasonal Affective Disorder and also helpful for people who need to get up before the sun. I recently purchased this device and will be returning it today. As another reviewer described, when set for "Dawn Simulation" it starts at 10% for 29min then increases to 100% in the last minute. Real dawn simulators start with a nearly imperceptable amount of light and increase gradually to a modest (300lux)amount of light at awakening time with a goal of broad illumination of the sleeping area. This lamp is very directional and would not provide even illumination of a pillow from a bedside table. The traditional intensity for Light Therapy is 10,000 lux. This lamp does not reveal its intensity, but it is much less bright than a real 10,000 lux light I have. It would likely require much longer exposure times for the same effect. Their online literature references the importance of blue wavelengths, which appears to be true, but does not reveal output in that range. The clock display is not visible unless the lamp is on.
In summary, It is NOT a dawn simulator, and NOT a Light Therapy Device.
It is a poor desk lamp and a miserable clock.
Customer Review: I use this lamp in my counseling office Summary: 4 Stars
I am a Mental Health Counselor in private practice. I put the lamp next to "the couch" to shine on my SAD clients while they are in session with me. Obviously, once a week is not therapeutic, but I am encouraging them to get their own lamp. Personally I use it next to my computer to get a 30 minute shot of day-light per day. I'm not afflicted with SAD exactly, but my energy levels do decline significantly during the winter, so why not? Another professional claimed in a review that this is not a dawn simulator and not a light therapy device, but he did not provide any evidence for his claim (especially the latter part of his claim) so take it with a grain of salt. The device is quite useful as a desk lamp, very directional, and intuitive to program. Main complaints are that the original programming disappeared after the lamp inexplicably shut itself down on first usage, and the unbelievable amount of packaging waste COMMON GUYS, HELLO!! Get green already... Otherwise, a 5 star rating.
Customer Review: Nice Lamp Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this lamp for my daughter. She loved it! It broke a few weeks later and I sent it back. I had a terrible time with the company we bought it from, Blue Diamond Products. We tried everything (detailed e-mails, a scanned proof of UPS mailing with the name of the Blue Diamond recipient's signature)for over a three month period of time to get them to answer back about getting a refund. I finally had to ask Amazon to intervene. Amazon did, and I got my refund quickly. Thank you Amazon! The second lamp so far so good and my daughter still loves it. Therefore, I highly recommend the lamp. Maybe I was just unlucky on the first one but since the first one did break fairly quickly, I gave the lamp three stars. If the first one hadn't broken so quickly, I would have given it five stars. But regardless, if you buy this lamp, DON'T BUY IT FROM BLUE DIAMOND PRODUCTS!!!
Customer Review: Had it for 3 years now, like it Summary: 4 Stars
I like my sunrise clock, still working fine. One LED never did light, but since there are a lot of LED's I didn't bother sending it back.
Pros:
Been working for 3 years now.
Gets very bright.
Heavy base, helps to keep it from tipping.
I wake up naturally in the dark, long winters of NY.
The light can be directed.
Cons:
The time is not lighted. You have to turn on the light (or another lamp) to see the time.
The time display is small and hard to read from an even a small angle.
I don't like reading under it. Even thought you can dim the light, I read before sleep and it seems to wake me up.
It would be nice if it had a white noise generator built in.
I would prefer a gradually louder alarm also. However, I almost always wake before the alarm anyway.
Customer Review: Works great! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm surprised at the recent reviews that this light isn't very bright. Mine is blindingly bright and works great for waking me up in the morning and as light therapy. I set it for a fairly short "dawn" of just a few minutes, and then lie under it for awhile at full brightness. Much much better than a traditional alarm clock. I position it so the light falls directly onto my pillow. Since it's such a bright white light I don't usually use it to read by in the evening.
Mine is over a year old. I wonder if they have changed their design since I originally bought it. I would say my one issue with it is that it's top heavy. They should have weighted the base. My preschool daughter likes to move the light arm into different positions, and the lamp topples easily if head is not almost directly over the base.
