Customer Reviews of NatureBright SunTouch Plus Light and Ion Therapy LampCustomer Review: This light is sadly fantastic. Summary: 4 Stars
Let me say, I hate that I love this light. It is big, white, bright as all heck, and spending 30 minutes of your day in front of it might cure depression because getting away from it already makes you happier. Yet I can say, it does work.
This is no miracle cure, many people struggle from Seasonal Affected Disorder and the cures are as varied as the causes. Many people convince themselves they suffer from a psychological condition after experiencing something that would cause any normal person, normal depression: break ups, loss of job, realization that society is spiraling towards self destruction. This light will not fix any of these problems. However, if you live in a northern state, and struggle from time to time to push yourself out of the house. If you struggle to deal with people, and find yourself more likely to be angry over the little things that truly don't matter. If your house is your haven in the winter, and you fight the roads and traffic to finally get home and feel comfortable again, then this light may be for you.
It works well, and I'll admit it's a type of energy I haven't felt in awhile. I live in California, but I grew up in Michigan. Recently I traveled home to visit family, and within two days, I felt the sun withdrawal. It was hard to visit old friends, and muster the courage to go out of the house. I am the man that sleeps exactly 7 hours a night, swallows a truck load of coffee, and leaps at the day. Yet the lack of sunlight and my S.A.D disorder pulled me into the white abyss of a Michigan January. So I purchased this via Amazon Prime, selected 1 day shipping, and waited.
It arrived well packaged, decently constructed, and bigger than I assumed it would be. I plugged it in and went. The bright light is annoying, and for best absorption, you are supposed to allow it to enter your eyes, not skin. That means occasionally starring straight at it. 30 minutes feels like forever under this light, even with coffee. The first day I felt nothing, and the feeling did not kick in til the evening. It's a hard feeling to describe. It's like drinking a Red Bull, but with less hype energy. It feels like a more sustainable energy. I felt....good. And so far, every day for a week I have used this, it has given me the same thing.
This will not fix depression, as the root causes need to be addressed through therapy, religion, and self exploration. However, for the "Winter Blues" it will give you the energy you need to do something with your life. It's left me with a somewhat hollow feeling, as I realize having spent 21 years in Michigan, and just now finding this light at 23, I may have been missing out.
I implore you to try it. Save your receipt, take good care of the box. This product may simply not be good for you if you do not truly have S.A.D. But if you feel you might, try it. If you feel nothing in two days, send it back. The alternatives, prescription medicine or dealing with it, make this light far worth the attempt. Give it a try, let me know how it works.
Customer Review: Works very well! Summary: 5 Stars
I don' usually review purchases, but I'd like to do so for this product since it may work for some people who are suffering from disorders related to the Circadian rhythm. I've been working at a hospital for more than twenty years and I've recognized more and more people have started to suffer from sleeping disorders, seasonal affective disorder etc. due to a change of life style (including myself). To remain in good healthy condition, our body clock needs to be reset by morning sunlight through our eyes and ideal ambiance for a good night's sleep, but it has been harder for modern individuals to achieve this goal.
This light helps those people reset their body clock and stay in an ideal health condition. You could visit your doctor for this kind of treatment, but it's a lot easier if you can do it at home. This product helps alleviate unpleasant symptoms like fogginess, sleepiness, fatigue and so on during the daytime. It's preferable to use it for thirty minutes early in the morning around seven to eight for insomnia and seasonal affective disorder to reset your body clock, though the treatments vary for individuals.
As for my experience, I saw improvement within a week. Just make sure you use it in correctly; the booklet in the box kindly gives directions how to use it depending on your symptoms as "Parameters for Using the SunTouchPlus." For instance, there are 'winter SAD,' 'shift work fatigue,' 'jet lag,' and so on. You are also told that you can reduce session time once you reached a desirable result.
Replacement bulbs are also available.
Also you really don't need to stare at the light; I place it on the table while watching the morning news on TV (or the computer) and sipping coffee. The booklet tells you how far and at what angles from your face to use it. Though it's made in China (the company is in Irvine, CA in the USA), it's sturdily built and I have had no problems so far.
There is also an ionizer function; ions are said to be good for relaxing, clearing the mind and so forth just like you are walking in the woods (trees are known to be a source of negative ions). (You can learn more about the effects of ions online, but please note that this is still a debatable issue, though our hospital used the ion therapy idea.) To some individuals, the distinctive odor of ions may smell annoying like plastic as some reviewer mentioned, but it's not anything wrong with this machine. I'm fine with the aroma. Good thing is you don't need to clean the ionizer; just wipe the outside of the slits where ions come out. And if you don't want ions, you can simply switch them off. Just make sure you turn the ionizer off after you use it, because the ionizer is not connected to the timer that you use when you activate the light.
Overall, I'd recommend this light to patients who suffer from minor symptoms due to Circadian rhythm disturbances. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.
Customer Review: I Was Deeply Depressed Until I Found This Magical Light Summary: 5 Stars
I get really depressed in the winter. The lack of light makes me freaked out and breathless, and I start forgetting things like where my feet are and how they are attached to my body. If I had to find and grab them for any reason, would I be able to? If I take my glasses off, will my eyeballs fall clean out of my head? What if I open my mouth and my teeth fall out? These weird things could happen.
I might have to go into a corner and lie down and curl up into a tiny, little ball. I really don't feel very happy at all. Maybe you should go away and stop looking at me like that. I want your approval and it is not forthcoming.
I was driving on the highway yesterday and had an awful panic attack. I saw a sign that read "Exit 19: 1 1/2 miles," except what I thought it said was "Ragnarok (aka Gotterdammerung): 1 1/2 miles." I had to put on the hazard lights and move into the breakdown lane. Weird spots of light were dancing in front of my eyes. I went into a cold sweat, and had to gnaw on the steering wheel through sheer anxiety.
At the gym I was instructed to hoist some 10-pound weights in the air. I did so listlessly, and then I imagined that the weights were really the icy-cold femurs of a deceased demigod that was going to haunt me by rising up from my bathtub. Except that I don't take baths, especially in the winter. It's far too scary, because all sorts of things might be floating beneath the surface: eyeballs, sentient sweet potatoes, snapping turtles.
What if I were walking along the street and my kneecaps fell off? It could happen. There's nothing really keeping them attached to my legs. Good God, the world is filled with terrors. I could fall into a hole inhabited by spiders.
Crickets live in my basement in the winter months and they could bite me.
Because of all the awful things that might happen, like my teeth falling out unexpectedly into my soup, I have purchased one of those lights that sad, depressed people use in the wintertime. I turned it on today and it was like I was out on a warm, sunny summer day! The NatureBright SunTouch Plus Light and Ion Therapy Lamp has changed my life in just one hour! The ions were refreshing and reminded me that life could once again be joyous and carefree.
Now, instead of seeing drooling, headless corpses lurching toward me through a miasma of gloom and self-criticism, I see bunnies wearing jerkins in festive Lilly Pulitzer patterns, such as "Green monkeys holding champagne glasses with shrimps poking out of the top" and "Pink alligators holding cocktail shakers in their jaws while being ridden to the circus by adorable kittens."
There are daisies raining out of the sky! Thank you, NatureBright SunTouch Plus Light and Ion Therapy Lamp!
Bunnies will leap from it and embrace you with their warm and carefree fuzziness.
Customer Review: Pretty Good Light Therapy for the Price Summary: 5 Stars
This Christmas Season I am serioulsy thinking about getting the Philips GoLight because of the great reviews it's getting. Last year I received the SunTouch (made by Apollo at that time) Plus and used it a few times during the dark days of Winter in 2007. I did feel somewhat better on those days but I'm not one easily able to discipline myself to sit in one location within the recommended distance from this lamp. Also, I didn't find it easy to put this lamp in my front of me right after awakening and was nervous about using it later in the day because of the circadian rhymthm thing. So, in a sense, a quirky neurosis or 2 kept me from consistently using it last year.
This Winter in Alabama has been one the dreariest we've seen in a long time. I don't think the sun has peeped from behind the clouds in over 5 weeks! Since the days are naturally shorter this time of year, the overcast weather has quadrupled the normal, seasonal light deprivation effects. About a week ago, when all my friends were talking about how the lack of light affected their moods negatively, I made a committment to get out the SunTouch (which had been put aside and practically forgotten) and muster the discipline to sit in front of it for 15-30 minutes upon arising.
The first 2 days I used the device, I noticed I could tolerate Christmas music again and even found myself singing along to a couple of Christmas songs. I also have found myself sleeping more deeply at night without the need to get up several times during the night for trips to the fridge to eat homemade white chocolate Christmas Fudge, which can be very fattening. After over a week of using the SunTouch and experiencing the benefits I now find it well worth the committment and the small discipline needed to get the recommended 15 to 30 minutes of light therapy per day. This has been one of the least blue Christmases seasons I can remember in years. I attribute most of that to this device.
I still want to purchase a Philips GoLight because of the portability feature and the wider distance range for the device to be effective. Having to sit so close to the SunTouch I find to be somewhat limiting. However, for the price I now find the SunTouch is an effective product when used regularly. I give it 5 stars because it really works for me to spirit away the Winter Blues and its not as expensive as the Philips GoLight.
Customer Review: It is what they say!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have finally accepted that I get funky in the winter. I really never thought about it until a few weeks ago I broke down crying and seriously considered going away to an island for relief. Seriously, it was that bad. I knew I wasn't right. Started putting two and two together and diagnosed myself with SAD. I am not in general a depressed person, but if there is no sunshine for more than a day, I become a very dark person, mood wise, just very emotional, depressed, if you suffer from it you know what I mean.
I started to do research and found out about light therapy saw this box on on here and bought it. My husband was skeptical but supportive.
I have now used it for 10 days straight. I do a minimum of 30 minutes. If it is fore casted to be sunny I will do the 30 if it is a cloudy day 45. I do use the ionizer. The first day I did the light with the ionizer I did get very nauseous. Very. However, I liked the after effect. So, I have continued. You get used to the smell and it doesn't bother me know. I do have an extremely sensitive stomach though, so it may just be me.
I have noticed a definite lift to my mood. I am very energetic throughout the day . No more crying. No more feeling like winter will never end.
Something that also changed, that I wasn't expecting, I generally go to bed around 11pm. Can't seem to go to bed earlier than that. However, after about day 5 or 6 I noticed I was getting very sleepy around 9:30pm. Like, my body felt like it was 11pm. In a way that has been a plus because I really could use the sleep. I never intended on using it to change my sleep cycle and frankly didn't really care, but hey not bad.
Anyway, I highly recommend it. I feel like everyone should have a light. I look forward to sitting in front of it. Feel strange telling people about it but if they could just try it they would see how great it is.
My husband walks in every morning while I am having my coffee checking email and says, " Are you enjoying your bliss?" If you watch the "V" program you might get that inside joke.
So, I am waiting to see if it helps with my PMS. If so, then every women should have one in their arsenal.
Buy one you have nothing to lose, if you don't like it you can send it back, if it works for you the way it has for so many others then you win!
