Customer Reviews of Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock, SPF 55, 3 Ounces (Pack of 2)

Customer Review: Best sunscreen ever?
Summary: 5 Stars

First, there is a newer SPF 70 version (which I haven't tried yet), which should provide even more protection than this.

Second, there is no such thing as a perfect sunscreen. If you must not get a tan, then stay indoors,

I am an avid golfer in California and stay in the sun for extended hours. In fact, golfers gets more exposure to the sun than sunbathers because we are out for so long (4-5 hours).

I have tried most SPF 45+ sunscreen in the market, including LA ROCHE's Mexoryl based sunscreen Anthelios, which has been considered as the best in the world (I also wrote a review on it).

This sunscreen beats them all in terms of pure sun protection. During light sunny days, I hardly notice any sunburns even after 4-5 hours of golfing. I do notice some sunburns during really intensely hot days due to the blazing sun. Please note, I put on AMPLE amounts of sunscreen (recommended by Neutrogena). Please do not use skimpy amounts and expect it to protect you (this is recommended only if you want to get a tan without getting excessive burns).

It is also sweat resistent. So it does not wear off easily at all. Its real negative is that it stings your eyes as if someone poked it with a toothpick. If you thought SPF 30 burns your eyes, your should try this one because it DOES hurt almost twice as much. It temporarily blinds you in agony. So please do not apply it over your eyes or your forehead. Instead, wear a hat.

Customer Review: A testimony!
Summary: 5 Stars

Because I have very sensitive skin and odor allergies, I have great difficulty in finding suitable skin products. When I discovered that Neutrogena (whose products I generally can use) carries a line of sun-blocks, I decided to try "Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock, SPF-55." I'm here to say that I fully endorse this wonderful product! No odor! No problem with skin reaction! Just as delightful: no greasy look or feel!

I work in my yard during every available hour, and sunburn and freckle like crazy. The first time I used "Ultra Sheer SPF-55, I was truly surprised. No red face! No new freckles! Neutrogena carries a higher SPF rating, but my pharmacy doesn't have that one available. I know now that Amazon sells two tubes at a great price.

In case you want more information, here are some pertinent facts straight from the product page:

* Two 3-ounce tubes of SPF-55 broad-spectrum UVA-UVB sun protection (6 total ounces)
* With patented Helioplex, which helps prevent damaging UVA rays from penetrating deep under skin's surface
* Dry-Touch technology absorbs excess sunscreen oils, leaving a clean, lightweight, non-shiny finish
* Non-comedogenic (won't clog pores), waterproof, sweatproof, oil free, PABA free
* Number one dermatologist recommended sun care brand; made in the USA

What the product page does not have is a real, live endorsement. Now it does. Highly recommended!

Customer Review: Long name, long protection
Summary: 4 Stars

This product has a long name: Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock with Helioplex. It's sister product from Aveeno has an even longer name: Active Naturals Continuous Protection Sunblock Lotion with Active Photobarrier Complex. Fortunately, both are long on protection compared to most other sunblocks.

"Helioplex" is Neutrogena's name for a proprietary formula that combines avobenzone and oxybenzone. Avobenzone is one of the more effective UVA/UVB chemical sunscreens, but it breaks down when exposed to sunlight, effectively robbing you of UVA protection within a couple of hours. Oxybenzone is used here as a photostabilizer, and enables the avobenzone to provide protection for a claimed 5 hours. The same formula is marketed by Aveeno as "Active Photobarrier Complex." (Both Neutrogena and Aveeno are brands of Johnson & Johnson, hence the shared technology.)

As a sunscreen, this works really well. This summer I worked in direct sunlight all day during the work week and found this sunscreen to be effective and pleasant enough to use. The smell is not strong or objectionable at all. It is very sheer and it rubs in and disappears quickly. The bottle isn't ideal, requiring you to unscrew the cap and making access to the last bit of it nearly impossible. That, and the fact that you have to really rub in the sunscreen well or risk getting dry flaking (as noted by others), is causing me to give only 4 starts to an otherwise wonderful product.

Customer Review: Finally!
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great product.

The only reason I am giving it a 4 out of 5 is for the fragrance. I am quite sensitive when it comes to frangrance on and around my face. It is an almost sour smell similar to a very floral perfume. When I first apply it to my face my eyes sting and water for a few minutes...

So far this sounds terrible, but! The benefit far outways the smell.

I have fairly light skin that burns within just a few minutes of being in the sun unprotected. I spend all summer camping, swimming, hiking, etc. I apply this to my face/neck/ears once in the morning and don't even have to think about it again until maybe 3 or 4pm. Even after splashing around near the river it holds up better than any sunscreen I've had previously.

The finish is nice, too. It leaves my face moisturized but matte. In the summer I use it instead of my regular moisturizer on some days. It goes well under makeup.

I am only sensitive to smells, but rarely have skin issues such as redness or breaking out due to products. The only person I would recommend to NOT buy this is someone who is always having a hard time with regular products irritating their face.

Customer Review: Gross - I looked like I had a bad case of body dandruff!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I love Neutrogena's regular dry-touch sunblock, so I was really looking forward to trying their new sunblock with helioplex. I was sooooo disappointed. I applied it just like the other sunblock and was hardly out the door when I started noticing white flakes on my arms. At first, I ignored it thinking that I had just picked up some lint somewhere. Once I was away from home, I looked down and my arms were covered in these white flakes. I checked in the mirror, and so was my chest, neck and face. I thought I brushed it all off, but later that night I was getting my makeup done when my friend (like makeup artist) asked what all the white flakes on my face were from (with that "ick" tone). Even a day later I am still finding flakes. I don't care how much sun protection it might give me, it's not worth looking like I'm walking around covered in dandruff. I've never, ever had anything like this happen with another product. They need to go back and fix the formula.
