Customer Reviews of Neutrogena Wave Power-Cleanser and Deep Clean Foaming PadsCustomer Review: Definitely pleasurable, here is my take Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This Wave vibrating skin cleaning machine definitely is easy to use and fits easily into my hand.
Here's what I got with mine:
1. One wave machine
2. The battery
3. A package of foaming pads
The package information notes that The Wave is designed to:
1. Be a power cleanser that cleans better than the leading cleanser. Since I'm not sure what the "leading cleanser" is, I am simply going to leave that information out there for readers of this review, hoping you know what the "leading cleanser" is.
2. Remove more dirt, oil and makeup
3. Leave the user with "softer skin" after just one use
4. Be gentle for daily use.
Actual Performance?
I have to say that this product did perform nearly perfectly as promised. We have hard water in our area so my usual use of my hands to put lather on my face and wash it off left behind hard water deposits.
Somehow the special cleanser that came on the Neutrogena pads left behind less residue than washing my face by hand or even with a washcloth.
It was certainly easy to use. I also wanted to add this bonus and UNEXPECTED benefit: one relative who has trouble with arm strength found the Wave to be OF GREAT HELP in cleaning her face (she is elderly).
It added a nice glow to both of our complexions (more than one person can use this as it has disposable cleaning pads that can be changed at will, leaving a new, clean pad for the next person).
The vibration as it cleans definitely seemed to improve blood circulation and slough off dead skin cells. Our skin felt softer after only one use, as the package label information indicated it would. Yes, it was gentle enough for daily use, even by an elderly person as well as by me and a teenager. We all loved it.
So why didn't I give it a perfect rating? Two reasons? Those disposable pads aren't exactly eco-friendly nor is the battery. Still, you could buy plenty of products that could clean your face but be even worse for the environment. This one is reusable and I think that is a plus. You can extend the battery life by buying rechargeable batteries.
I can't give this one an unequivocal "perfect" rating. But I feel obligated to address the product's target market, claims and results. It preformed BETTER than expected when it came to cleaning our skin and producing a glowing complexion. It is also small, would be easy to pack on a trip and wouldn't require electricity. I'd take it with me if I had to stay overnight at a hospital and avoid touching all the soap dispensers that might have been touched by ill patients or other people spreading germs from dispenser to dispenser. It would be an advantage in that situation, especially since pads come sealed and ready to use, sterile.
The Wave ( it comes as a Starter Kit ) is a hand-held vibrating cleanser and comes with two trail packs of pre-soaped pads and the necessary AA battery. Of course, I'd have to get it back from my relative first. She is in love with the Wave!
I wanted to add that this i actually safe to use at the sink or even in a shower. I do wish that the package containing the pads was resealable. I got around that by putting them in my own little zip pouch.
Customer Review: It's a Vibrator for Your Face with Single Use Soap Pads Summary: 3 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I was surprised to find that this product is basically a little vibrator for your face. It does not move in circles or scrub. With your own hand you make the movements of your choice and you press as deeply as you want.
The pads come pre-loaded with Neutrogena soap and you moisten them then apply it to your face. I was surprised by the fact that these were pre-loaded with soap because I had envisioned the ability to use my own soap. I already have a facial cleanser that is gentle enough and good for my skin. However since Neutrogena is a soap company I am not surprised this product has soap in it and that they are single-uses, which means we have to keep buying more and more of them, I wonder what they cost per use? Now that I own the device the only way I could continue to use it is to keep buying single use soap pads.
The pre-loaded soap in and of itself may be an issue for you. Our skin is so unique I don't feel that I am in a place to say if the soap is great or not; how could I tell you if the soap will work on your skin? My skin is not oily, it is "normal" and perhaps a bit dry in the winter, and it is sensitive. I found this soap to be very drying such as leaving dry patches and sometimes leaving my skin shiny and tight. It does not seem right that after washing my face it should literally be tight and dried out (requiring the use of a facial lotion). I usually do best with soaps labeled "gentle" and "sensitive skin".
One more thing about the soap, it cautions that it should not be used in the eye area. This would mean that for women wearing facial makeup we'd have to buy another makeup remover product and use that. That is more time and money. (The usual facial cleanser I use is gentle enough for the eye area and is marketed to double as a makeup and eye makeup remover so I am not used to the extra work of doing two cleansing processes or buying two different products.)
The fragrance of the soap is not overpowering. I was happy for that. I prefer unscented products. Some different facial cleansers on the market are so fragrant that they give me headaches.
My last issue is that I was using this in the shower which is said to be fine in the directions. However the little soap pads must stay dry until right before use. They do not come in a resealable container. I took one of my own plastic cases and put them into it so I can keep them in the shower.
In the end I am not sure how useful it is to use a vibrating motorized product on your face. I think what is more important is that we pick a soap that is the best fit for our unique skin.
And women have to address whether they want to use one or two cleansing products if they use eye makeup.
A Twist: I tried using a round organic cotton pad sold as a facial cleansing pad and used my own facial cleanser. It did work but the cotton fibers got stuck in the Velcro on the device. I am not sure this added anything when compared to me using my own cleanser with my fingertips or with a cotton terry washcloth.
I am torn between rating this 2 and 3 stars.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have somewhat sensitive skin in that my face usually does not like to be scrubbed too hard or exfoliated. So while looking forward to trying out the Neutrogena Wave, I was a bit apprehensive at first. But first things first:
The Wave comes with an AA battery and a two-week supply of disposable cleansing pads. It also includes a disposable attachment head, which is like a 'plastic velcro' disc. This disc snaps into the Wave and the velcro-like surface holds the pad in place during cleansing. The Neutrogena Wave website states that the attachment head is good for 30 uses after which it needs replacement. A 30-pad refill packs therefore always contains a new head.
I found it a bit tedious to put in the battery, the lid wouldn't come off at first and it took several attempts to get it open (but that might have been just me being too clumsy).
The unit has an on/off button which is integrated into the colored side. It is slightly favoring right-handed people because if held in my right hand, it can be operated with my thumb, whereas when I hold it in my left hand, I must use my index finger (bent around the unit) which then sometimes takes more than one attempt to keep the unit on or shut it off. But this is really not a big deal and I am only mentioning it for the sake of completeness.
The pads, when moistened, hardl foam at all. While this might help to keep skin irration at a minimum, I felt as if I used the unit longer than I had to, just to get some foaming going - and with it the feeling that I was actually cleansing my skin. For quite a while it felt as if I was just moving the Wave around my face without any visible results. It felt pleasant enough though: a gentle vibration with no noticable abrasive effect but also not much foam either...
I did notice that my face felt considerably smoother afterwards. But also much tauter and I needed a richer moisturizer than usual to get rid of that feeling.
My summary:
Pro:
- Cute little gadget with a cool design. Looks like it does the job,
judging from how my face feels afterwards.
Cons:
- Probably works well for oily or rough, uneven skin but to me, the added smoothness is offset by the unpleasant tautness I am experiencing after using the Wave.
- Call me a stickler but this additional piece of plastic (the attachment head) that I am supposed to throw away each month and which does not seem to be labeled "recyclable" bothers me. In this time and age, this should be recyclable and not just end up in the general trash.
Therefore: Kudos for design and smoothness. But $12 for this unit as well as an additional $8/month for the refills and the non-recyclability of the attachment head led me to give only 3 stars.
Customer Review: Cute but non-essential item Summary: 3 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
It's interesting that Neutrogena, long known for being especially friendly to people with allergies and sensitive skin, has thrown themselves behind the idea that we need to "power cleanse" our faces.
This is the second of Neutrogena's facial power cleansers I've used. Compared with the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator, The Anti Aging Power Treatment Kit, The Wave is gentle. The package says you can use The Wave every day, whereas the Skin Rejuvenator is recommended no more than three times a week. The Wave device is small and designed to fit comfortably in the palm . There is only one vibration speed on The Wave and, unlike the Skin Rejuvenator, it's low enough not to rattle your teeth. The on/off button is quite small and hidden on an edge of the color panel. If you need glasses, make sure you know where the button is located before you jump in the shower with this.
The Wave's cleansing pad is a soft cotton disk that contains a Neutrogena cleanser. I couldn't tell if there was a difference between the side of the pad that attaches to the device and the side that comes in contact with the skin. Nothing indicated "this end up" so I guess it doesn't matter. Among the reviewers there seems to be an objection that the plastic bag that holds the pads is not resealable and therefore the pads dry out. They may dry out a little, but since you're supposed to be wetting them to produce a lather I can't see how keeping them in an airtight pouch would produce a better lather. Soap dries out all the time and lathers up when you wet it again. The pads don't produce a lot of suds, but many facial cleansers produce little or no lather.
In all the years I've been interested in facial skin care, the recurring theme (from dermatologists to Cosmo) has been to treat your skin gently - no harsh scrubs, no vigorous towel drying - that sort of thing. Gentle treatment is especially important if you have sensitive skin, acne or rosacea - rough handling can lead to scarring. Even though The Wave is gentle compared with some other devices, it still strikes me as something that would fall into the "rough treatment" category. Maybe if you have normal skin with no problems, power cleansing won't do you any harm, but I can't believe it does any particular good either.
Although many other companies are now making similar units, the power cleansing device is still a novel idea. Neutrogena has a long-standing good reputation, and they've produced a very cute package here. I believe this will be a very popular impulse buy for a while but ultimately it's just a gimmick - you can't use it around your eyes or nose; you can't even used your preferred soaps and cleansers. Not recommended.
Customer Review: Good product, but Neutrogena has a better option Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Good skin is something I am always conscious of. I can't even begin to count the number of cleansers, moisturizers, and gadgets I've tried on my face. When Amazon.com offered the Neutrogena Wave Power Cleanser for review to their Vine members, I knew I was interested in trying it, especially after enjoying the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator, The Anti Aging Power Treatment Kit so much.
Neutrogena's Wave Power Cleanser worked fine. It cleansed well, it had no issues being submerged underneath the shower spray (I prefer to wash my face in the shower, and the documentation assured it was submersible), and I suffered no ill-effects from its use.
That said, I also didn't notice any significant improvement in my skin after adopting this new daily regimen. It didn't seem to make any more difference than the Aveda Purifying Crème Cleanser I've been using for years with a simple washcloth.
Perhaps it is my regular use of the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator, The Anti Aging Power Treatment Kit that caused me to see no difference in my skin. After a week's use I began to wonder if the Wave Power Cleanser simply could not improve on what that other device is already doing for my skin using it three times a week.
Regardless, I see no need to continue to use the Wave Power Cleanser. Yes, it worked fine. Yes, it was easy to use. But it is still a little more trouble than your normal facial cleanser and a washcloth.
If you are looking to add a step to your facial cleansing routine that performs more in-depth exfoliation and skin cleansing, I would recommend the Ne Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator rather than the Neutrogena's Wave Power Cleanser. Why, you ask? Simple. The Rejuvenator is recommended for use three times a week rather than daily use. Simple math says that requires fewer purchases of the special cleansing pads both devices require, reducing your long-term cost of use. Also, it is less cumbersome to use the simple washcloth cleansing method in your daily routine and add the more thorough cleansing/exfoliation only three days of the week.
The Neutrogena Wave Power Cleanser is not a bad device, I simply think for what it does, a washcloth and your favorite cleanser does just as well in most cases, and Neutrogena has a much better option for thorough cleansing and exfoliation in the Rejuvenator.
