Customer Reviews of Now Foods Sprouting Lids - Stainless Steel MeshCustomer Review: Forget the plastic, keep the metal Summary: 4 Stars
Once I broke the death grip the first of these plastic lids had on my wide mouth ball canning jar I immediately canned the whole bunch - except for the meshes. The mesh covers work perfectly with the metal rings that came with my jars. I'll soak my sprouts (anything from small wheat berries to mung beans and beyond) with the solid lid on, then swap it out for a mesh screen, drain, and start sprouting by rinsing a couple times a day. I never have to remove the mesh lids after the initial soak because I can simply fill up the jars through the meshes, swirl it around a bit, and then drain right there. Incredibly convenient. However, you are paying for the plastic screw-ons as well which are a total nightmare, so no five star rating.
Customer Review: Lids don't fit canning jars well Summary: 4 Stars
These lids work really well once I managed to wrestle them onto the jars. They're designed to fit wide-mouth canning jars, but the threads are poorly designed so they don't screw on. You have to pop them on by pressing down pretty hard. However, they do work really well. I like them better than the all-plastic ones because water drains in and out of them easier. With the all-plastic ones sometimes the surface tension makes it diffcult for water to pass through the tiny mesh holes and I have to unscrew the lid to rinse the seeds, which is difficult to do because the threads on those also aren't designed very well and I have a difficult time screwing and unscrewing them. But both kinds do the job they were meant to do.
Customer Review: Now Sprouting Jar Lids Do Not Fit Wide Mouth Jars Summary: 2 Stars
The two stars are not because of the misrepresentation but because the lid is still useful rather than returning for refund.
This lid is being misrepresented as 'fitting most wide mouth jars'. When you purchase canning rings it does not say 'will fit most wide mouth jars' it states right on the package that 'these rings fit wide mouth jars'.
There are basically two, maybe three makers of canning jars today and these lids will not fit.
Everyone that sells Now Sprouting Jar Lid and copies the item description From Now is misrepresenting these lids.
That being said, the jar lid is not a total loss. By removing the screen and placing it in a wide mouth ring.
Customer Review: Can work around the threading problem Summary: 4 Stars
I have this lid which I purchased at a local health food store. I took the first one back because it wouldn't thread and the owner, who sprouts on a regular basis, showed me how difficult is to make a plastic product like this to thread effectively on a wide-mouth jar. All that needs to happen is to hold the lid on when you drain the water from your sprouts. Otherwise, it works great and my sprouts have been ready to harvest within 3 or 4 days. I don't know if it is possible to have a plastic lid like this that will thread tightly on your jar so it may be an expectation that can't be filled. However, the manufacturer should let their customers know how it works and why.
Customer Review: I can make them work... Summary: 3 Stars
I had bought these in stores before, but it's been a long time since I could find them anywhere. The product has one serious design defect: the plastic part will not readily thread onto a wide-mouth canning jar. I mean, you might be able to get it to thread but it's gonna take a lot of work to get it on and off if you do. I bought them anyway, because it's easy enough to take out the stainless steel screen and put it inside a real canning jar ring. The green, plastic lids I threw in the recycling. If I'd known where I could have purchased just the screens, I'd have done so.
