I just got the Dietcalc a couple of weeks ago after having it recommended to me by a friend and I have to say I absolutely LOVE IT. I started my diet in January and lost about 20 pounds. I did that by carrying around a little spiral notebook and a calorie book and just writing everything down I ate which worked great, but I found I was pretty much eating the same things everyday, so once I started getting close to my goal, I bought this just to keep me on track until I got the rest of the way. I also plan to keep using it even when I reach my goal, to make sure I don't gain any of it back. It's so easy to keep with you all the time as opposed to a notebook and a calorie book.
The only drawback is that it does have a limited database of foods, but I think most of the basics are in there so if you're in a restaurant and unless the foods within the dish you're ordering are really outlandish, you should be able to find them in there. Chances are if they're that outlandish you probably shouldn't be eating them anyway if you're trying to lose weight. But the beauty of it is you can add your own items, which works out great for me. I have about three different combinations of Fiberone cereal and soy milk I eat for breakfast everyday, so I just figured out all the stats per serving of each one with the same amount of milk and put them in there myself under 3 different names. So every morning I just pick the one I ate and pop it in there.
Another thing some people have said is a drawback that it doesn't give you an actual list of what was entered and sometimes people forget if they've entered it or not. I think I solved that problem. I just cut a post it note in half and stick it inside the case and then whenever I eat something I just write it down real quick on the post it, put it in the Dietcalc and then just put a little checkmark next to it to let me know that it's been entered. That at the end of the day when I've reached my limit and am not going to be eating anymore, I just toss it out and start a new one the next day. You don't really have to write alot down, like the quantity or anything since it's just a reminder to let you know you've entered it in the Dietcalc.
I bought that Calorie Smart first and did not like it at all. It's very complicated to use and the buttons are so tiny I had to use a pen to press them. Plus one of the buttons kept getting stuck under the face which was annoying when I was scrolling down looking for something. I didn't like that bump on the back either. It was a little cumbersome to carry around. I also found the calorie counts to be a little suspect. I ordered something at Ruby Tuesday from the menu one night that the Calorie Smart said only had about 400 calories in it. Well, when the waiter brought the dish to our table, my husband and I both looked at it and said, no way does this only have 400 calories in it. In only ate a third of it and took the rest home and I'm still not sure I had only 400 calories.
