Customer Reviews of Omron HEM-650 Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor with APS (Advanced Positioning Sensor)Customer Review: It's a keeper! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had high blood pressure for years and have been looking for the perfect monitor. This is as close to perfect as I've found.
Historically, wrist monitors have been innacurate. Depending on where one placed their wrist (low, high, etc), you would get different readings. This unit demands you place it in the same spot everytime or it won't work. When you have it positioned correctly, you get four little beeps and it proceeds to measure.
When I found that my rheumy and my cardiologist were both using these wrist monitors, it got my attention. So I bought one.
I used it for about a month and brought it to my appointment with my internist. We compared it with the manual cuff and found it to be within 3%.
The other GREAT factor is that my doctor could now scroll through a week or two of my home measurements! I was able to delete one HBP pill because he said "You do have white-coat syndrome, your readings are fine when you're not here."
It is also SO easy to use for anyone. The auto-inflate cuff that I used to use was OK, but difficult to get on and it didn't like a non-regular pulse. Many errors. I've only had one error in six weeks and that was because I moved to swat a fly.
You will be impressed with this device. I promise it will be the best $70 you've spent on you health (A write-off, too!).
Customer Review: Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor Works Like a Charm Summary: 4 Stars
I have been using a wrist blood pressure monitor for several years, but recently the band broke so I was in the market for a new one. The Omron HEM-650 had the best ratings across the review sites I visited. Since I received the device it has been a pleasure to use. The accuracy appears to be excellent (I have not checked it with the medical profession yet). The display is easy to read, and the average function is handy. I did find one strange and unique function. Most blood pressure monitors increase the pressure (manually or automatically) until all blood flow is cut off, then gradually release the pressure measuring the systolic pressure and then the diastolic pressure as the cuff pressure is released. The HEM-650 automatically starts increasing the pressure slowly measuring the diastolic pressure and then the systolic pressure on the way up, and then releases all the pressure. The value in this is that you never experience more pressure than is necessary to measure the systolic pressure. The advanced positioning sensor is somewhat flaky. If you hold your arm against your chest with the device at heart level it works fine. However, if you want to rest your elbow on a table or chair arm and position the device at heart level, it is difficult to find the place where the sensor is happy.
Overall, I rate the HEM-650 as an excellent device and would recommend it to others.
Customer Review: Omron HEM-650 Wrist blood pressure monitor with AP Summary: 4 Stars
I have waited a long time before reviewing this product to make sure what I have to say is correct. I have many PVC's making it hard to get a correct reading. This unit gives me more correct readings then most units and also tells me if it was taken while PVC's were happening this way I know the reading may be off. A good clue for me is a pulse reading in the 30's area. I like the idea that the unit has to be in the same place on your body each time because this can make a big difference in your readings. The position will not be the same on all people. The position on my body is where it says it should be but my wife has to have it higher on her body. But it always used the same position every time. With the memory you don't have to write down the reading every day to keep track. I like the advantage of being able to write down the reading for my Doctor once a year before my physical insted of every day. My wife likes our old monitor better then this one but she don't have my problem of PVC's which makes it impossible for me to use. Battery life is good I haven't replaced them yet. Some people find this unit to be slow but it is so much faster then our old unit (which is a Omron) I find it to be quick. The only reason I write a review is to help someone else make a informed decision. I read other people's reviews before I make a purchase.
Customer Review: questionable quality Summary: 1 Stars
I really need a reliable BP monitor to track my own BP due to several concurrent medical conditions, and Omron is the supposed leader. Sad to say, the monitor failed within six weeks of purchase, when I desperately needed to give my doctor my readings over the phone. I ended up admitted to the hospital through the emergency room, due to dangerously low blood pressure, combined with dangerously high pulse. The monitor could have confirmed that the meds I was on had lowered my BP too low, too fast, causing a dangerous situation for me. Had the Omron 650 worked that day, I might have had quicker medical care through my own doctor, rather than a very costly ER experience with a doctor who was clueless as to why I was telling him how much lower my blood pressure was running on the new medication change. He admitted me, ran a ton of tests (when all I needed was a change in medication), and I am now almost $7000 poorer (employer only offers catastrophic health insurance policy). Now I am faced with replacing with a backup, and shipping this one back. Omron was not helpful at all. I have to go to the office to print out the email purchase/ship confirmation from Amazon, and write Omron a letter, to get the thing repaired/replaced under warranty. If your health depends on a BP monitor, think twice about this model from Omron.
Customer Review: User friendly Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking for a device that would be easy for my 88 year-old mother to use on her own. She was told to monitor her blood pressure, but can't use the public style because they are set to test the left arm. Because of prior surgery, her left arm can't be used. So, when looking for the wrist type, this monitor had all the qualities I was looking for. When we received it and showed Mom how to use it, she found it easy to use and easy to read because the screen uses large print. She doesn't have to write anything down. She takes it to her doctor and he can read back through the last 90 days (one reading per day). Because she has an occasional problem with ventricular tachycardia, the monitor also lets her know if the heart is beating irregularly with a simple picture. The cuff beeps when you have it positioned properly for inflation. This isn't a function that is useful for Mom, because she is hard of hearing. But, fortunately, the beep isn't really necessary because positioning is easy for everyone--fingertips on your shoulder. I have recommended this monitor to everyone. I am a dental hygienist and frequently have to monitor blood pressure readings on my patients. I bought one for use at my office. It is quite accurate according to my patients. So I've found nothing negative about this product.
