Customer Reviews of Omron HEM-650 Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor with APS (Advanced Positioning Sensor)

Customer Review: so easy...
Summary: 5 Stars

hi, I am one of these clueless people who have difficulty with machines that have a lot of buttons for programming. Also I have hated, absolutely hated, did i mentioned hated having my blood pressure taken (i have this strange fear that the cuff is going to squish my arm and break my bone...i find myself panicking.. i know, stupid, irrational..whatever).

Can you imagine my surprise to discover this? I didn't even know wrist monitors even existed. Thank you Amazon. The review that cinched it for me was that a lady bought it for her aunt? in her 80's who finds it easy to use. Okay! If she could figure it out, so could I. I love the big display, all the cool beeps and then the correct beeps for correct positioning, also the memory storage of readings. It's my new toy right now. I know i am supposed to wait 15 minutes (ie rest) and not have eaten etc for 30..(is that why they make you wait so long to see a doctor for your appointment?) but i have been taking my readings at various times and activities during the day and night, just to discover how my blood pressure varies with whatever i am doing. Fascinating.

So glad i got this. It has taken the terror out of having my blood pressure taken (yipeee) :) Oh yes, and it was half the price on here as it was in the drugstore, yay!!!

Customer Review: Worthwhile Purchase
Summary: 5 Stars

This unit is so very easy to use. I was a bit skeptical about the Advanced Positioning Sensor, but it works exactly as advertised. There's an instructional graphic that shows you how to sit and position your arms. After a couple of times getting used to the audio feedback & proper orientation, it now takes me less than 5 seconds to get in the right position. The unit is quick... takes less than 30 seconds for my measurements. I've tested the unit against another more expensive unit that I own and they're within 5 points (+/- max) of each other. The unit's memory is very handy and tracks close to 100 measurements. When you first push the memory button you see the average. The pulse rate indicator seems accurate, and it does not seem to give the false positives for an irregular heartbeat, which my more expensive unit does, quite often. Especially after I exercise. {I've had an echo-cardiogram, so I'm comfortable with the fact that my heart is working properly, according to my cardiologist.} Even if this product breaks, I'll buy another one. I use it quite often, so I expect it won't last forever.

UPDATE (06.26.09): This unit still works great. Have replaced the batteries 3 times, that's it. As accurate now as it was when purchased. Great buy for me.

Customer Review: Not reliable at all
Summary: 1 Stars

I am in shock because I don't believe how products like this are in the market and recommended as a accurate blood pressure monitor.

This Omron HEM-650 reads 30 or 20 below what my Dr. reads. I also tested it agains the one in the Fire location in my City and was also wrong.

What can put you at risk is that when you have around 120/80 it reads well but when your pressure is highest it reads 20 or 30 mmhg bellow.

I bougth this product to monitor my hight blood pressure that is around 160-90 because a friend of mine have one and he said that is accurate. Well both monitor where completed wrong and I am sending it back.

Yesterday my friend and I bougth a certify sphygmomanometer at our local Farmacy $17.00 and I learned how to use it in 3 minutes, we compared the readings in the new ones and are around -1mmhg in diference. Also I went to the Fire location in my area and compared my readins with the one over there and is almost the same reading.

I also used a automatic auto inflate arm cuff that a coworker brought and it read 10mmhg bellow in the Systolic messure.

If you buy this product: PLEASE COMPARE THE READINGS FOR A WEEK OR MORE AGAINST AN ACCURATE DEVICE.

Thanks

Customer Review: Disappointed with Accuracy!
Summary: 3 Stars

I was really happy to see and hear that wrist-band type of blood pressure monitors are now available but was concerned if the readings were accurate since this seem to be mentioned a few places about this style of reader. I decided to go with a brand name hoping the quality and accuracy would come with the product and reputation of the company. I performed my 1st reading as was thrilled it appeared that new blood pressure medication was doing a REALLY good job of lowering my numbers. My daughter was not convinced. So I took the machine with me to one of those clinics in Walmart and HEB and had them do a manual screening vs. the wrist-style device. On both occasions, the manual reading was higher than the wrist-style monitor. Higher enough to alert me that my medication was still not at proper dosage to control my pressure. The wrist style showed that, on the contrary, my pressure was normal. I am really disappointed this didn't not work as intended since the ease of use is great. I can easily pop this on my wrist, place my wrist above the heart and take a reading without assistance from anyone else. But I must have accuracy or at least close (+ / - a few digits) on my readings and decided to go back to the arm bands. Again, REALLY DISAPPOINTED!!!

Customer Review: Handy way to check blood pressure
Summary: 4 Stars

This is our second of these. We bought the first one at a local CVS where the price was $27+ higher.

It's accurate -- to verify that, we have taken it with us to doctors' offices and have taken our blood pressure there immediately after the doctor (or his/her nurse) took it. Results were comparable.

Results are clearly displayed and easy to understand. The memory feature is handy -- one can go back and review the results of prior B/P checks.

It comes set to work on the left wrist. If you want to use it on the right wrist, there's an easy adjustment for that.

It's particularly handy for regularly monitoring the B/P of a 90-plus year old relative who is bedridden, with multiple ailments, and who cannot easily be transported to a doctor's office.

The only negative is what it calls "A.P.S.", (Advanced Positioning Sensor) that ensures ones hand is in exactly the right position -- relative to the heart -- before beginning the test. We have found that it is more of an annoyance than a help. We have disabled this feature, and it works fine without it.

We'd recommend it to anyone looking for a simple, inexpensive way to monitor B/P.
