Customer Reviews of Omron HEM-650 Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor with APS (Advanced Positioning Sensor)

Customer Review: How did so many like it?
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this as so many really seem to like it and I needed a new BP monitor.
This one requires you place it next to your heart to sense it's beat and then it will start it's cycle to read your BP.
It worked OK and just OK for me. I am a little hard of hearing and I could not hear the audible beeps telling me that I had found my heart. I could see the heart blinking more rapidly however and when I got it in the right place it inflated and measured.
My wife on the other hand could hear the beeps barely but as she is somewhat overweight at around 180# this device could not "hear" her heart enough to locate it and auto inflate to function.
I can also imagine that if you had a sore arm and could not move it well that it could also have a problem.
I returned my order the same day I got it. At least with Amazon the return it easy and at no cost. I will look elsewhere and get an manual starting unit like we had before.
In this case the self sensing portion of this device is simply not a good choice for us.

Customer Review: Completely inaccurate!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I did quite a bit of research regarding blood pressure monitors, and most reviewers--individuals and institutions--seemed to agree that the Omrons are the best. I originally purchased the Omron HEM-780 (with arm cuff). The first device was not good, and would completely choke often plus it was not providing very accurate readings, so I had to exchange it.

Now back to the 650 . . . I am glad I have other means of checking my blood pressure (the 780 and a machine at work, in addition to the doctor's office) because if I only had the 650 and trusted it, I would be in trouble. I've checked its readings against the other monitors, and it consistently gives me normal, below normal, or much below normal readings, which is not accurate since I am having high blood pressure problems lately.

Not sure if it is this particular unit (just as it happened with the 780) or if it is just not a dependable model. Bottom line: I am not willing to exchange it and hope the next one is OK, and I am returing this device today.

Customer Review: Quick, simple, and accurate
Summary: 4 Stars

We ordered this item the same day my wife discovered it being used in her doctor's office. It's a real winner. For those who have been struggling with pump-up devices, relying on those machines at the pharmacist's counter or in your health club, and/or encountering inconsistent, confusing BP readings, your search is over. This little guy goes on your wrist in seconds and stays secure with a velcro fastener. If you set it the way we prefer, you simply move your forearm slowly up your chest until you hear the beep indicating proper positioning relative to the heart, then hold still and wait a few seconds more while it does its work. Our only complaint, and the only thing holding us back from five star rating, is some occasional reluctance to get to that heart location position as quickly as we might like. Finally, this model has all the extra functions we would ever need (memory function, logo reminders, etc.); the next model up seems like overkill, and the one below lacks what really are some fun and helpful features.

Customer Review: It's The Best!
Summary: 5 Stars

No doubt about it. I made my Doctor eat his words. He was convinced that I had a real case of hypertension. Each time he took the readings they were dangerously high. I told him this only happens in his office due to anxiety caused by the test itself (White Coat Hypertension). He did not believe me and thought I only wanted to stop my medications (which I did). I used the OMRON 650 and got 118/76 almost consistently. Great! When I went to his office it would be 130/94 (+/-). I told him what my machine said and he questioned it's accuracy claiming that it must be out of calibration and reading low. I took it with me to his office where it tested me within 1 point of the readings taken from his unit. It went high even on my machine. Then I showed him the historical readings on my machine. He ate his words and my meds are a thing of the past along with the side effects. I am now treating my BP with diet, exercise, meditation, and herbals - successfully. No side effects at all. My BP is very normal.

Customer Review: Awful product does not work for me
Summary: 1 Stars

I have been a medical professional for many years in the past. I know how to take pressure. I have had an Omron self BP cuff for about 7 years and it just got tuckered out and not doing its job any more so I decided to try a wrist model since I have trouble with my right hand and it is hard to pump the bulb to get the blood pressure.
This thing did not work for me at all, I must have gotten a bad one. At first it was giving me a wonderful reading of about 140/72, I wish, I normally can't get below 150/80, I was 158/88 last week at the Doctors office.
This morning when pressure is usually high this machine registered 63/44
I am dead and don't know it yet. If you buy this make sure you can take it back, I bought it at a local CVS drug store, it cost more but now I don't have to waste time and money on shipping it back. Make sure you can test it first. I am going back to the manual unit. This is not a product you want to fool with, it literally can mean your life.
